Things in the musical that I love. I’m sure everyone already pointed all of these out like a year ago, but whatever.
1) GGAH ends on a gospel sound, because its philosophy is literally their gospel
2) “great expectations” is in a major key, and “grave revelations” is in a minor key
3) ICTTYAL, “suddenly it seems…” it sounds like the next line will be the final line. Like the verse should end, “suddenly it seems, I could talk to you all night.” But then Cherry adds one more line. Then another. “I could talk to you for hours. But these hours go like minutes.” It mimics a conversation where you keep thinking of little things to add on just because you don’t want it to end. The song is drawn out like their conversation. Like their conversation, the verse should end but it doesn’t.
4) RRB sounds like one of those “legend of an outlaw” folk ballads
5) RRB does that thing I love when musical act one finales do, and when they do it well: it brings back multiple musical and lyrical motifs/leitmotifs from throughout act one and re-contextualizes them in the current circumstances. “You’re a greaser now and you ain’t goin’ back,” playful and prideful and celebratory in GGAH, now an ominous verdict. It seemed like a game before, but now shit just got real. (Of course it was never a game, that’s the point). There’s no coming back from this. “This town is a dead end road, let’s leave it behind let’s just get up a go,” is twisted from a fantasy into something they’re forced to do.
6) “little brother” and “stay gold” both end on unresolved notes. Two unresolved, unfinished lives. For Dallas it’s chaotic, a high note because he dies screaming. For Johnny it’s a more peaceful, premeditated choice to pass his final message onto Ponyboy, for Ponyboy to carry it forward in a way Johnny can’t. Both lives are cut short, but both live on through Ponyboy. Ponyboy picks up where their melodies left off, and finishes their stories.

I can finally show off my Outsiders illustration I did for @stay-gold-zine! The Outsiders is one of my favorite books and being part of this zine is a fantastic experience to go through. I wanted to make this illustration special so I went down an emotional route by drawing up Ponyboy's High School graduation along with photos of the Greasers that Sodapop took. This is a rare direction I go down on so I hope you guys enjoy it!
#the Ponyboy and Johnny ones rip my heart out#let’s just imagine he was alive for pony’s graduation#love this art!!#the outsiders

I can’t find the post pointing out that Cherry is the only main character in the musical to get a costume change.
And that costume change is a lilac sweater. For hopeless war, after Bob’s death, she changes into Bob’s color.

soda who enlists in the war but it's not because of steve, or because of the money — deep down he knows that ol' uncle sam is lying, that they're only going to earn a fraction of what they were promised. but he doesn't enlist for that.
he enlists for darry. darry, who's already given up so much to keep their family together. darry, who knows how to keep the house running and how to keep pony in line. soda knows their luck. he knows one of them is bound to get drafted — better him than darry.
he doesn't tell darry or pony when he leaves. he packs his bags in the afternoon when they're both out of the house, he cooks them a nice food-colored dinner that they all enjoy over jokes and jabs. darry teases him about forgetting to salt the potatoes. pony snorts milk through his nose.
it's a perfect night. which makes it even worse.
he writes a little note and leaves it in the kitchen, explaining where he was going and how they could write to him. tells them that he loves them, but doesn't quite explain his motives. he tells them to take care of each other, that they both need the other more than they know.
he walks out in the middle of the night, pressing a quick kiss to pony's forehead and then to darry's cheek. then he's gone.
he meets steve at the bus stop and almost immediately regrets his decision. he's a stayer, not a goer like his brothers. but it'll be worth it, he figures. better him than darry.
#I wanna cry#It pains me that they wouldn’t even find out the news together#darry would wake up early and be rattled to the core just sinking into the couch and silently sobbing#pony would be a mess clinging to Darry#and poor two bit wouldn’t be seen for days he’d get so wasted

sodapop curtis doesn't get angry. well, scratch that.
sodapop curtis doesn't get outwardly angry. there's always something burning underneath — a fire simmering — but he never lets it boil over. he figures there's no point. his brothers already have enough going on in their lives without having to deal with a ticking time bomb. so he keeps bottling it up, faking a smile whenever he has to.
he made the decision a long time ago — probably even before their parents died — that somebody had to be the calm one when everything else was falling apart.
so he holds it in. the sleepless nights, the unspoken worries. the rage that flickers hot in his chest every time darry yells at ponyboy or when steve talks too loud about things he shouldn’t. when pony comes home scraped up and pretending not to limp. when darry’s back hurts after a long shift and he tries to hide it.
sodapop curtis doesn't get angry. not out loud. but he carries it all the same. anger at how unfair everything is. anger at the silence between darry and pony sometimes. anger at the fact that he can’t fix it.
he keeps smiling though. keeps being the glue. if he lets himself be anything else, everything could fall apart.

I love you outsiders fandom. I love you artists who draw the musical cast so beautifully and capture the joy they radiate. I love you artists who draw book accurate characters and remind me how dorky dally truly is. I love you writers who write those fics that break my heart. I love you writers who write those fics I keep going back to when I need a pick me up. I love you update accounts that tell me all the fun tidbits about the musical I'll never get to see. I love you musical fans who come out of the show covered in gravel and blood like you just rumbled yourself. I love you book fans who underline the text and have quotes written on your walls. I love you movie fans who fell in love with a silly little movie and all its 80s glory. I love you tv show fans who suffer through the VHS copy uploaded on youtube.
I love you fans who were forced to read the book over a decade ago, only to discover a character that made you feel understood in a way you didn't know was possible. I love you fans who stumbled upon a musical that had lyrics that spoke to a part of you that you thought life had snuffed out. I love this book that has been around longer than most of us have been alive, and yet we get to exist in this space together, writing stories and creating art and analyzing lyrics and watching performances that make us cry. I love being here with all of you.
I love you, outsiders fandom.
#let’s keep this positivity going!!#i love you outsiders fans#book; movie; tv show; musical. I love you#thank you for just being here#the friends I made years ago through this book who I’ve lost touch with now. I still love you guys#I love the fans who read through a cringy fic written by a thirteen year old. who love the fic with all their heart and inspire the author#to keep writing and to keep growing#cuz I was once one of those cringy writers haha
