To be honest Bryx hadn’t the slightest idea about baking. He knew his mother was a decent one and his grandmother as well but he wasn’t really sure he was the person to be able to help with this. What he did know was frustration and whether his housemate knew it, he was exuding it. And it may have been bold to think this, but he also wanted to keep in the dorm they’d all started to call their home for the while they’d be in school. And even with Percy saying it was alright, that he’d had it under control, Bryx didn’t entirely believe that. Especially from the look on his face after he’d dipped his finger to get a taste.
“Well.” He’d started, contemplating whether or not touching that batter was in his best interest or not. Bryx bent over the island and folded his arms over one another. “I’d say from the looks of it it may need a bit more sugar and a smidge more flour.” He’d concluded upon peering into the bowl. It didn’t look like it couldn’t be saved and if he wasn’t so quick to pick up on the sister part, he’d have just said to scrap the whole damn thing. People did things differently when they were working through something. Though to what that was, Bryx couldn’t say, he just figured perhaps to fix it would be easier. “And I’d say a bit of cinnamon. But only if the recipe calls for it.” He’d tugged the elastic off his wrist, pulling his long hair backwards. Not that he was going to be the baking but he also didn’t want to risk ruining them with his abnormally long locks. “What sort of bread or cake or biscuits is this meant to be?”

Percy wasn’t allowed to touch the oven or stove at home. His mom didn’t trust him. Although, she didn’t trust him to walk outside and get the mail, so he figured her bar was low for trust. Percy hadn’t given her any reason not to trust him, other than that one time that he accidentally almost burnt his hand on the stove and the one time he fell asleep in the oven, which his mom almost turned on to cook dinner. Okay, maybe there were a lot of reasons that his mom should not trust him. Percy missed home. He missed being able to talk to his sister and his mom every day other than just by owl. So baking was a good way to connect with his sister. Maybe he’d get good enough at one recipe that when he went home, he could impress her with an amazing meal. Percy doubted it. He couldn’t handle being in the kitchen for more than a few minutes at a time. He was already getting distracted now that there was someone else in the room with him.
“Are you a baker?” Percy asked, abandoning the bowl of dough-like material and brushing the flour off himself a bit. He wanted to learn from someone that knew something about baking, rather than just continue to sit around as if he knew what he was doing. He was more curious about the conversation than finishing the actual task he’d been doing. This is why he could never get anything done. “Cinnamon! Of course, that’s what they’re missing.” Percy ran to the cabinet with the spices and dug around for the cinnamon, grabbing it. He raced back towards the bowl and dumped a bunch of cinnamon in, mixing it together. “Um... I don’t know, but my sister makes them all the time. She says it’s very easy.”

odd-ankot‌.
Odd had been enjoying the Hufflepuff common room for the most part, sprawled across one of the comfortable sofas with a book in her hands. She enjoyed the relaxation and the lack of responsibilities since there had been no homework given for the day so far. Plus, nothing was better than staying inside during a rainy day and enjoying the atmosphere of the common rooms, something that she didn’t usually get to bask in. That was the downside of having her own apartment at times, it took away from the dorm experience all the while she hadn’t needed to give up her freedom.
She was there between classes to get out of the rain and stay dry. It was enjoyable and she found herself growing hungry as time passed. She stretched before separating herself from the comfort of the couch and making her way over to the kitchen in search of something sweet and warm to contrast the cold, raining day. When she walked in she noticed someone there as well, though they looked preoccupied with whatever they had been in the middle of making. She hadn’t considered to speak up or distract him until she heard him talk aloud and glanced over at him as she opened up the fridge. “What’chya baking?” Odd inquired as she pulled out some chocolate powder and closed the fridge only to pull out the mini marshmallows. “Need any help or you got it under control?? Seems like you’ve got it under control…” She mused and started to boil some water so she could get her hot chocolate made.

Staying in one place for more than half an hour was not something that Percival Regan liked to do that often. Classes were some of the most boring things Percy had to attend for school. Half the time, he didn’t pay attention and the other half, he had no idea what was going on. It was a wonder he wasn’t flunking. But he’d always been a clever child. He didn’t need to be the smartest person to know what was going on. He wanted to be a better, more responsible person, but Percy was young and this was the time when he needed to explore the world – and himself – before becoming a proper adult. The whole university experience was mainly for figuring out what he wanted, not an actual education. He’d become more responsible when the time came that he needed to be – probably. Sometimes Percy felt like a big disaster, but then he remembered that even wildflowers were beautiful.
Rainy days were fun most of the time. Percy could normally find something to do, someone to bother, or somewhere to go. Although today being in the kitchen seemed like the best place to be. he’d never been the best baker, but he tried and that had to count for something. Actually, Percy wasn’t good at a lot of things, except being outside and tending to plants. But he did have a lot of love to give and saw the best in any situation. He glanced up to see Odd and couldn’t help but smile. “They’re… supposed to be chocolate chip biscuits.” But they didn’t have the right consistency. He’d wanted them to be more like tea biscuits. Oh well, they’d turn out okay. “What about you? What are you making?” Had to be more interesting than attempting to figure out if he had forgotten flour.

Finally getting a handle on a routine in this place, Bryx found himself actually having got more than his usual amount of sleep. And he felt good. This usually meant he was close to receiving a visitor of sorts, who he hadn’t known but at least he’d take the small gift they gave before they utterly drained him with whatever they needed to get out. His warmest of sweaters on and hair relatively cleanly swept back the puff made his way out to greet the day and his house mates. Though the grumble of his stomach was telling him that perhaps he ought to think about the order of things this morning. Quick pit stop wouldn’t hurt, breakfast and then off to start his day.
Though he was pleasantly surprised to find he wasn’t the only one with that notion. Or at least that’s what he’d first thought. But upon hearing what the other man was saying, Bryx found himself growing slightly concerned. He wasn’t sure if they were making something for themselves or the rest of the house but he was not about to risk everyone, even just them, being in any sort of state after eating something with a missing ingredient. “What’s uhh … you alright over there?”
Tumblr media
For the most part, Percy hated routines. He didn’t like it when he had to do the same thing over and over again, especially when there were so many new things to explore and do. And maybe that’s why he’d opted to spend some time in the kitchen. Besides avoiding homework, it was one of the better tasks to do and might keep him out of trouble. Sometimes – most of the time – trouble had a way of finding him. Without his sister around to keep him occupied, Percy was bound to cause trouble one way or another. One of these days, Percy was going to get hurt and his sister was going to write him a strongly worded letter about how stupid he was. When that day came, he might be more cautious… or not. Half the time, Percy had no idea what he was doing here at school. When he’d never been the best student in the first place, but since he had no idea what he wanted to do with his life, this was a better option than trying a bunch of things. Besides, this was as close to freedom as he’d get considering if he was at home like his sister, their mom would have him on house arrest – and where was the fun in that?
Baking had never been his strong suit. Unlike potions, the worst that could happen was that he could explode some food in the oven or it would taste really bad. Potions weren’t something Percy was that great at, but he’d always enjoyed the subject. His sister excelled at baking. She use to make cookies for them all the time and it was one of Percy’s favorite things in the world to taste her creations, especially before they went into the oven. He missed her, so maybe that’s why he found himself in the kitchen, clearly failing at whatever he was trying to make. “Yeah, I think so.” He was not alright. But he didn’t want help! He could do this on his own.  The Hufflepuff took a taste of his own creation and tried to keep the look of disgust off his face. “Taste just like my sister’s.”

motherfuckingnoah‌.
Noah was bored which usually led to him taking off to find an adventure to get involved with. He wasn’t the sort of guy who handled downtime well, unless he was in a social situation or strung out on something and today had been particularly frustrating for some reason. That’s how he found himself on the quidditch pitch for a good portion of the afternoon playing a pick-up game with other students before people started to go off to do other things.
Once that was over, he wasn’t in the mood to head back to his dorm room. He knew his roommate was busy and spending time studying into the evening wasn’t something he could stomach. He was flying around on his broom and taking in parts of the new castle that he hadn’t had time to explore, but eventually ended up at the original Hogwarts School, a bit of nostalgia tugging at his heartstrings.
From there, it wasn’t much of a stretch for Noah to end up at the entrance to the Forbidden Forest. He’d only been inside a handful of times, mostly for detention back when he was younger. He wondered if it would be something that would be as exhilarated now or if it would be just as boring as everything else was proving to be that Thursday late afternoon.
As Noah sat on his broom above the treetops, he considered going back to the University but found himself curious when he saw another student in the area. It didn’t seem to be a high school aged student, but he didn’t have a good look at the other male until he swooped down on his broom in front of them.
Once he was closer, the guy wasn’t anyone who looked familiar but that wasn’t altogether strange. It also didn’t stop Noah from holding up a hand in a casual wave, hoping he wasn’t intruding on a personal moment. “Wasn’t expecting to see anyone else around here,” he admitted, a grin crossing his lips. “I’m Noah,” he said quickly, “And I was thinking about taking on the oh-so-frightening forest on my own….but…maybe you want to keep me company?”
Noah shot the guy a smile and continued, “No sweat if not and I can’t promise we won’t end up eaten by a troll, but seems more exciting than heading back to the dorms and writing another bloody essay,” he finished, figuring it couldn’t hurt to make a new acquaintance. Besides, he wasn’t exactly frightened of the Forbidden Forest, but sometimes old habits held fast and it did give him a bit of anxiety to go in alone with nothing but a broom and wand.

Percy wasn’t the type to ever be bored. There was always something to do, someone to bother, or somewhere to explore. He was so busy that often he didn’t have time for his homework. He’d never been the smartest person in the classroom, his sister was a much better student than he was. She’d always been the responsible one, at least compared to Percy. The boy would rather spend time outside than anywhere else. For a while, Percy was content with staying near the castle, surveying all the people who were also outside. But after a while that got boring – and he found himself walking towards the greenhouses. On another day, he’d be willing to spend all afternoon in there with the plants and other students that liked herbology, but today was not that day. He spent all of about five minutes there, trying to convince someone to leave – but they all had homework and he gave up trying to convince someone that there was always tomorrow!
In reality, he should have also been doing his homework, but that took too much effort when it was such a beautiful day. No one else on the grounds seemed to pay him any mind as he walked around, shoes in his hands, trying to find something to do that wasn’t going to break his bank or get him into too much trouble. He let his feet carry him in any direction they felt like going, watching for some sort of adventure. One of these days, he’d find a person here that was just as into adventure as he was, who was just as impulsive as he was. But that wasn’t on his mind as his feet carried him. He had to stop a few times – and once to put his shoes back on because the rocks were cutting his feet – but somehow he managed to make his way back the original school, or well… the Forbidden Forest.
His sister had mostly managed to keep him from getting detention while they were younger, but she hadn’t spared him the one time he’d gotten detention in the Forbidden Forest. He’d thought it was kind of boring for a place that was forbidden. All he’d noticed where there different plants in the forest that one day he would remember to go study. Percy looked at the forest, thinking that it might make for an interesting afternoon. Better than sitting around doing nothing and avoiding homework. He glanced at the trees, spotting a bird sitting on a branch and found a rock to sit on, contemplating if this was a bad idea alone or if he didn’t care. His mind was all over the place, which is why he didn’t notice another person on a broom coming towards him.
“Eep!” Percy was lucky the rock wasn’t that far from the ground because he managed to fall off it and land on the ground. He hadn’t expected to see anyone. The Hufflepuff laughed and stood up, not bothering to brush the dirt off his clothing. It wouldn’t be the first time he came back to his dorm covered in dirt, and wouldn’t be the last time. “Percy – and same.” Obviously. He eyed the forest again, sticking his tongue out as if he were concentrating on the question Noah had asked him. “Well…” anything was better than going back and working on homework. “I wouldn’t mind the company,” he replied, a grin on his face.
He thought for a minute more. “Do you think if a troll gave us concussions, we’d be allowed an extra week on those essays?” Percy had a nasty one that he really should have been working on for Herbology – he hated herbology essays. He didn’t want to write about plants, he just wanted to grow them. Percy put a more serious expression on his face as he reached in his bag looking for his wand. “Oh… well, I think I left my wand back in my dorm. I’m always forgetting it, but I think I can take on the troll with this,” he produced a flower crown he’d made earlier and placed it atop his head, before looking in his bag again. “Oh, wait, nevermind. Found it,” the boy pulled it out. “’Kay. I’m ready.”

Baking wasn’t something that Percy was very good at. He got far too distracted in the middle of the recipe and tended to forget to set a time. Half the time, the results were either burnt or messed up because he’d forgotten an ingredient. But it was relaxing to bake when he was in the mood for it. The weather outside was unpredictable and although he’d rather spend his afternoon exploring rather than cooped up inside, Percy knew better than to spend the day outside in the rain. He knew better than to risk getting a cold. And the only pair of shoes he had were cloth, which weren’t good for the rain. When he’d walked by someone eating a biscuit earlier, he had the idea to attempt to bake something. He always loved it when someone left fresh cookies in the dorms, though he was never one to manage to bake anything successfully to leave out. Today he was determined.
He was mixing the dough with his hands instead of using magic when he stopped. “I think I forgot an ingredient. Butter? Sugar? Flour?” he thought out loud, attempting to figure out what it was. Percy thought maybe trying a bit of the batter would help, but it tasted fine to him. “Eh, oh well. I think they’ll turn out alright.”
