i have talked about this before. but it is legitimately fucking insane to me that a guy gets shot. and because the guy is a single dad, his best friend steps up to take care of his kid and keep him on his schedule while his dad's in the hospital recovering, stays at his house and sleeps on the couch and takes the kid to school etc etc. normal! cool, normal, extremely generous, lovely best friend behavior. but then when the guy wakes up, the best friend says: i should have held it together better, i was really struggling and i broke down in front of your son, and i just think it would have been better for him if i had been the one to get shot. which – this is an objectively true statement. for anyone normal, yes; that is a gut punch of a sentiment, and it is heartbreaking to hear buck say it out loud, but it is objectively true for anyone normal that it would be better for a child if his dad's best friend got shot vs his only living parent getting shot. you know? like that is not an insane thing to say, even in the context of all of everything between them. but then the dad – AND THE NARRATIVE OF THE SHOW – says no actually, you're wrong. it wouldn't have been better. it would have been the same; it would have had the same effect on my son if you had been the one to get shot. you matter to me, and you matter to him, and you are an important enough part of both of our lives that i have you written into my living will. i have an advance directive that says, in the case of my death, i want you to gain custody of my son. you, my best friend, and not my own parents or my aunt or my grandmother or either of my sisters. you. and you stepping up like this proved that i was right. and I cannot stress enough how insane it is that not only do the characters believe this, but the ACTUAL NARRATIVE OF THE SHOW agrees with them and backs them up and says: this is the reality of the situation. like!!!!

Alright in hindsight it is kind of funny that seemingly at first the writers were like “we’re going to have this one-off character who’s basically going to exist for one episode to be the frustratingly impossibly perfect foil for buck,” when writing eddie’s character for the first time.

but then eddie worked so well as a character that they were like “okay, well, we just introduced a Jennifer Love Hewitt character who’s not obviously paired up, so he can be her love interest,” but then jlh had the brilliant idea that maddie should be paired up with chimney and so that was out the window.

So they probably just started really developing the buck/eddie friendship thinking that it made for a fun dumb-and-dumber style best friendship/comedic duo, and they could figure out the love interest thing for both of them in the future. Except they way overshot it and accidentally made them soulmates.

sure ok. why did eddie even go to texas then? why set up that he’s gonna choose to stay with the 118 (not even like. a buddie thing specifically) for himself because thats where he belongs and then instead he’s forced to stay by CHIMNEY??? why did bobby die?? why did athena sell their house? why did eddie go to texas?? why was eddie going to texas buck’s entire storyline for the season? why chekovs el paso fire employee who abandoned them for a wife in another state? why did eddie tell buck he wasn’t going to make him move out if he came back and then he moved out?? why did bobby die in the middle of a season of rat disease?? why the silly and flippant tone after bobby died? why the 4 minute funeral? why the theme of people returning? why the grahambobby parallel except he lives??? why did athena take bobby’s body to minnesota? how is maddie already giving birth?? how long was eddie in texas? why didn’t chris ever express any desire to move back to LA ?? why did hen do literally nothing all season?? why did bobby die? why did eddie go to texas?

tommy kinard was a straight character until he wasn't. he was a big macho racist white guy that harassed hen and chim. he played along with gay jokes made by his homophobic, racist friend! when he came back into the story, fully reformed, he was suddenly gay and woke.

bucktommy fans will say he changed and grew, but eddie can't. eddie is straight and abusive right? they ignore the fact that tommy not only saw him as competition for buck's love and left him bc of it, but also scoffed at the idea of eddie being straight.

they also I guess are incapable of comprehending the idea of a closeted person thinking they're straight! all queer representation has to be from gay white guys that never had any issues with internalized homophobia or compulsory heterosexuality! eddie can't be gay bc he thinks he's straight! all queer people know they're queer from the jump and closeted people are straight! (but lets ignore that buck was straight until he wasn't)

and watch how easy it is for me to tag this as buddie and not bucktommy or tevan bc I'm venting to buddie shippers not going on a mission to convert people by calling them dumb!

something i love about the buddie dynamic that i can’t get enough of is how they compliment each other. buck has so much love to give. he wants to take care of people and be there for them, something evidenced by his relationship with abby and taylor. and eddie? he’s spent his whole like taking care of others, being told that he shouldn’t show that he needs help. that was what caused his and shannon’s downfall. he just needs to let someone take the heavy work sometimes and buck is willing to do that. but eddie also knows that buck sometimes takes too much of others to the detriment of himself. eddie knows when to take care of buck. they have this level of understanding between them that no other relationship will ever come close to emulating. they know when to push and when to pull and they know when they mess up, the other will understand and they can work it out. they’re the perfect example of how opposites can attract and create a dynamic that’s so compelling that nothing else for them will make sense. it all comes back to them being each other’s person.

Can someone explain to me what is so compelling about the lawsuit arc in 2025 that people are still writing fics about how Buck should have ran away from the 118 after Eddie called him exhausting? Like why are so many people so hooked to that moment that they still need to write one million words about Buck getting his Revenge against the LAFD because of the lawsuit and Eddie yelling at him in the grocery store

for the record i think if you are attached to a specific queer identity for eddie that's fine. like, there are so many valid interpretations. but i do think that this becomes, well, limiting and dismissive. when people talk about it in Absolutes. like, the idea that he HAS to be this or that, or that his character ONLY makes sense when he's this or that. because that line of thinking ignores just, so much about queerness. and sort of perpetualises this idea that you have to be One Thing and that's it, that sexuality is this rigid immovable thing when for a lot of people it's not that at all.
