Book: My Book of Life By Angel

2. Why I chose the book :

I chose this book because this book gives an inside of being a prostitute especially when you're underage and hooked to drugs. I also chose this book because I feel like this is a deep story and it’s based on a very sensitive topic that nobody ever really talks about or feels important to talk about. This book also raises some sort of awareness and it’s out there for young girls to read to let them know that this is something that is still currently happening.

3. Connections :

a. The justice system plays a role in the book at one point so maybe the justice system could be the topic of pecha kucha.

b. Prostitution is shown in the book so this also be a topic on my peach kucha going into to detail of prostitution and what age it usually starts.

c. Drug addiction is shown in the book my topic could possibly be about drug addiction and how it begins.

Romeo and Juliet

Question :

Why does the love story begin with a street fight?

A: I believe Shakespeare started off the story like that to kind of catch the readers attention more by starting off the story with such a violent fight to give the reader a understanding of the bad blood between both families and the hate they have for each other. I also think he uses this scene as a way for the reader to understand later on as into why the two can't be together. 

 Personal connection : 

A personal connection I would make would be young love, when you're a teen you meet someone you barely know and you instantly fall for them as if this someone who you will love for the rest of your life and a t times that could happen but in reality you just "love" that person because of their physical appearance instead of getting to know the person and learning more about who they are as a person and this results with the relationship ending in a horrible way.b>h2>

Connection to the world: 

An example of a connection to the world would be the American revolution. I used this as a example because this is similar to the war between the Montagues and the Capulets, for example America between 1765-1783 America fought for their independence against the British. This reminds me of the war that the two families had against each other and it was like Romeo and Juliet fighting for their love and being able to be together.

Summary of Scene 3 Act 1 :

In this scene, Romeo is accompanied by Mercutio and Benvolio, with a few other companions and  are now at the party that is being held by the montagues (Benvolio). All the guests come to party in disguise wearing masks and dress up in fancy dresses. Benvolio and Mercutio are full of enthusiasm for the masquerade and enjoy the night but Romeo seems to not want to join in and have fun with them. Romeo continues to sulk and be miserable about his love disaster with Rosaline throughout the night.

Metacognition :

A.) One technique that has helped me the most would be viewing scenes from two different movies on Romeo and Juliet. This technique helped me because when watching the scenes, as the reader you can see how the scene is really supposed to look like meaning you can see the emotion that is being put into the scene whereas you’re just reading the scene and sometimes you can misunderstand how certain lines are supposed to be said and the emotion behind it. So I believe that technique has helped me the most with keeping up with the story.

B.) One technique I would use if I was reading Romeo and Juliet on my own would be reading summaries of the scenes in the story online or in the book or I could possibly try summarize the scenes myself. One reading strategy I would use would be reading the text out loud to help myself understand it more instead of reading it in my head which does make it a little confusing. Another reading strategy I would use would also be looking up difficult words online or in a dictionary.

I chose this image because I found that it represented Melli in this chapter and how she felt, I also chose this image cause it represents a broken angel that also reminded me of Melli.

*Starting from pages 188 to 208

Continuing from the last blog, Call goes out with Melli ( the young girl who’s staying with Call and Angel) and brings her back from the ‘baby dentist’, but really Call pimped her to a man who was a dentist. In the book the author describes call bringing her back “boneless and broken”, this meaning that she was hurt ,heartbroken , and scared at the fact that her body was used; it gave her a numb feeling. As Angel realizes what’s happened to Melli she immediately begins an argument resulting in Call telling her to leave, to walk ou that door if she wanted to but she knew that Call would kill her before she could make it down the street. Call was hurt by the fact that Angel only stayed because she cared about Melli and not him which did spark a bit of anger in him resulting in him wanting Angel to fear him and to know that he would always find her if she escaped. After what Melli experienced she stayed to herself more meaning she didn’t give any effort to try to communicate with Angel to give her a sign that she was okay, as Angel tried to force her talk she ended up giving up and let Melli be seeing she was hurt. The next day, Officer Dave come by to the apartment and give Angel new that another one of co-workers/friend widow (who got arrested in the last chapter) had past away from a slow bleed. Angel then went the kitchen to grab a knife and cut her toe off. The reason for this would be the fact that whenever Angel and Widow were working, Angel would always go over her line which was the boundary for her side of the sidewalk. Widow would always joke and say that she would cut off Angels toe for stepping over her line so Angel felt that it was right for her to cut off her toe for Widow. Before she could proceed, Melli came into the kitchen seeing what Angel was about to do and decided to grab the knife away from Angel before she could hurt herself. Angel then realized hat she was doing and took back the knife from Melli and made Officer Dave a sandwich. While making her sandwich, Melli made up a plan to get Melli back home. After Angel finished giving Officer Dave his services she took his wallet and hid to make it seem that he forgot his wallet and would not be able to pay Angel so he told her to tell Call that he would pay her double next time. This was just the beginning of Angel’s plan. Personal reaction: My personal reaction so far for this chapter would be very surprised/excited because for the most part I'm surprised about what happened to Widow, I mean from the last chapter we read about what happened to her and how she got arrested but I find it very weird that 2 days later she ends up being dead. I'm upset because I think the police force should be doing something and try to find the man for the cause of her death. I'm also excited for the next chapter because Angel FINALLY begins to create a plan to help Melli get home. I think she is trying to get Melli home because after that the next step for her would be trying to get home and away from call but I believe that this plan will help her get home to her father and brother. One question have for the next chapter would be: Does Angel's plan work and Melli finally gets to go home or does Call find everything out before the plan can succeed?. Personally I think that the plan will succeed but their will be some difficulties while proceeding with the plan for example Call can have some suspicion about what Angel might be doing or try to figure out what's up Her sleeve now.

Today In this entry we will be comparing the poems “Do Not Go Gently” and “Funeral Blues”First,the tone in both poems Are based on The death of a loved one for example in stanza 4 of funeral blues,the first two lines have a similar feeling to stanza 5 in do not go gently into that goodnight;the third line states “Rage,rage against the dying of the light” and in funeral blues stanza 4,the first two lines state “the stars are not wanted now;put out every one”.These two lines I find similar because they share the same tone;when I say tone I mean by the attitude and the tone of voice the author may have used sounded very demanding.Lastly,in both poems they use symbolism to portray the key theme which would be death,for example,I noticed that both poems use a lot of metaphors to symbolize the feeling,the attitude and heartbreak in both poems.Secondly,In both poems they give some sort of a setting.For example,in Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night in stanza three line two it states “Their frail deeds might have danced in a Green Bay” and in Funeral Blues,stanza three states “He was my North,my South,my East and West,my working week and my Sunday rest,my noon,my midnight,my talk,my song”. Both lines would be used as a figure of speech to express and go deep into the feeling.To come to a conclusion,I find that both poems are similar because of the points and evidence I have found to compare both poems and find the similarities between to the two.

So far, Angel is still continuing to work double shifts on the streets to help prevent the young girl Melli that she has recently been watching and preventing from going on the streets.Because of that call has forced Angel to continue with working the double shifts. As Angel was working her double shift that night she built up some sort of strength to stand up for herself,one of Angels customers decides to call her a ‘whore’ and Angel had the last straw with customers calling her names and talking down on her making her feel smaller and smaller by the day,she finally decides to stand up for herself but that ends with her losing a customer,she states in the book “I figured out how to not be bossed around by other people’s words” when she says that she means by not letting peoples words get to her and in her own book of life she gets a say of who and who can’t be in her life basically meaning that no one will ever be able to make her feel little of herself no more. That same night, her co-worker/friend Widow ended up getting attacked by a male.Angel then decides to call the police but before they could make it the angry male runs off,instead of the police trying to go find the male they decide to arrest Widow who is now all bloody and bruised from the incident that had just occurred .This chapter continues on with officer Dave taking her home and decides to meet Call.Officer Dave and Call start to discuss the incident that had happend and talk about Calls ‘business’,Call tells Angel to go along with whatever officer Dave wanted which meant he knew what Angel was and wanted to be apart of it by becoming another customer of hers. 

Personal Reaction: Personally I feel happy/excited for Angel because she had finally learned to stand up for herself and not take disrespect from nobody,I noticed later on in the book that she starts to grow more of a backbone and decides to take risks more. For example she decides to get a tattoo that symbolizes an angel,Call ends up finding out and freaks out by 1.beating Angel,and 2.fighting the owner of the tattoo shop for going behind his back by tattooing Angel.

 One questions I have for the book would be.... If Angel decides to leave call and give up on Melli or does she continue working the double shifts to prevent Melli from going on the streets.I personally think that Angel does find a way to protect Melli but at the same time leave Call and just get away from the life that she is currently living.

Reflection❗️

My 3 strengths as a reader would be 1.)reading every line and re-reading the text to give me some sort of understanding of the book or poem. 2.)being able to visualize what's being said in the text. And 3.)finding a way to connect with the character. Two reading skills that I'm working to improve on would be making clearer connections with a bit more detail and working on my inferences.A way I used one of the skills in the poem is by making a connection using what was in the text and what was a mixture of background knowledge and research(The history of women's rights).For example in the poem,in one line she states"Earless and eyeless,perfectly voiceless",The author gives the reader a perfect understanding of women not having a voice or basically being silenced,since this poem was written in a time period where women didn't really have rights to anything,this gave me a perfect connection to the line that was stated in the poem.A way I continue to build and improve on these skills is by practicing more and re-reading the text to get an understanding.I also plan to start reading examples of ways to make proper and clearer connections from the text to help me improve more.

My book of life by angel is a dramatic novel written by Martine Leavitt. This book is about when a six-teen year old with the name of Angel meets Call. He refers to himself as a business man and dresses in a way “he could walk into a office/and nobody would blink”.Call starts off by buying angel meals and soon starts to express his ‘love’ for her.He then starts to give her some type of drug also known as “candy” in the book,pretty soon Angel becomes addicted to his “candy” and continues to come back for more.She finally decides that moving in with Call was the best since her father had kicked her out after finding about her drug addiction.Call decides to then ask angel for a favor of her hooking up with a couple of friends in return for more candy. those couple of friends turned to more and then more until she then started working on the streets at Hastings and main at a notorious spot in Vancouver,Canada as a prostitute for Call.Serena,another girl who works for Call and a friend who Angel recently became close with since she started working as a prostitute had ended up missing.Instead of Call trying to find where Serena went he brings a new girl in who was much more younger and vulnerable than Angel. Angel decides to help the little girl leave so she doesn’t end up in the same state that she was in, but Call decides to step in and threatens Angel if she stopped the little girl from working.He threats that he would harm her little brother who she dearly loves so much,so she begins to work double for her and the little girl.this book mostly revolves around the time a number or women went missing in Vancouver in the beginning of 1983,the author gave us a look of what it was like as prostitute and the struggles one usually went through.personally my reaction to what Angel went through made me sad and it kind of opened my eyes that this is something that still happens now in 2017.Sex trafficking is something that is very serious and is currently still happening,there has been many times a number of women have went missing at once and the government still doesn’t take it serious.It’s bad to the point where it’s no longer women in the age of their 20’s or 30’s but young teen girls and this book focuses on that.One question I do have for the book so far is if Angel does take the risk to escape with the little girl and deal with the consequences? or does she continue to put up with Call and his threats?.So far my prediction for that would be that she ends up coming up with a plan to try to escape with the younger girl and ask her father for help which would also be the smartest choice to make in a situation like that
