"It is when you are asking about something that you realize you yourself have survived it, and so you must carry it, or fashion it into a thing that carries itself." -Anne Carson, Nox

1492. As children we were taught to memorize this year with pride and joy as the year people began living full and imaginative lives on the continent of North America. Actually, people had been living full and imaginative lives on the continent of North America for hundreds of years before that. 1492 was simply the year sea pirates began to rob, cheat, and kill them.

do you see why i love this guy? so long, see you tomorrow reminds me of a trauma narrative. they way stories change when you tell them to other people, the way they change when you tell them to yourself. and then they a story can be like a house (alice munro: "you go inside and stay there for a while, wandering back and forth...") and they way a house can be like a memory, all those long corridors. i think of beams, rafters, footsteps worn into rising stairs. this is where memory is: open the door, walk in.

“What we, or at any rate what I, refer to confidently as memory—meaning a moment, a scene, a fact that has been subjected to a fixative and thereby rescued from oblivion—is really a form of storytelling that goes on continually in the mind and often changes with the telling. Too many conflicting emotional interests are involved for life ever to be wholly acceptable, and possibly it is the work of the storyteller to rearrange things so that they conform to this end. In any case, in talking about the past we lie with every breath we take.” ― William Maxwell
