Update 31 - ENDGAME
1st of June 1998
Situations throughout the Archipelago:
Pertaining to the situation in Bandung, OSU, under the leadership of a young philosophy lecturer named Yohanes Slamet Purwadi, has finally struck a deal with the devil. Using their manpower, they were able to gather enough information on GMKI’s West Branch and struck a deal with Polda to give the main protesters protection in exchange of this pivotal information. As a result, Polda Jabar has now coordinated with the various student movements initiated by OSU, providing protection to the student movements, providing protection on various pockets of Chinese Indonesian communities, thus allowing them to keep on fighting the good fight to make sure that the voice of Bandung will be heard.

Following Bandung’ s lead, the situation in Yogyakarta follows a similar route. With the mass protests happening all throughout Yogyakarta, with it ending in Gejayan street, demonstrations in Yogya remain burning hot. Things climaxed with, not being able to see His city burning, or the potential of being burned like Jakarta, the Sultan surprised every onlooker when He made a surprise visit to Gejayan, and read out loud the five demands of the student movement amidst a crowd of shocked and roaring onlooker, with standing beside him being Ridaya, the face of the Yogya revolution. Situation in Yogya soon calmed knowing that its Patron was on its side. With this, the world now takes notice, and Soeharto will surely have to act.
While things are running smoothly amidst the two main pillars of Java, the same thing cannot be said to describe the happenings in Jakarta. Utter chaos is the word vehemently used to describe the situation, with multiple organizations cluttering and clambering with each other, not gaining anything. FORUM KOTA is in a war devouring itself as it struggles to deal with the GMKI remnants, and the main universities of Jakarta are paralyzed by the weight of the revolution. A racial-religious “war” is raging amidst Muslims and Christian communities, with the main victims being predominantly the Chinese minority. As chaos ensues, the military is sent in and actual casualties started raining in the dozens.

As a result, it is now remembered as the May 28th tragedy, with Syaiful Bahri Ansari and Adian Napitupulu being the most prominent victims, both martyred trying to keep the peace. Despite the chaos and the utter disorganized nature of the movement in the capital, the success of the outer areas have moved political gear into motion, not knowing what results it yields. Soeharto has been reported to be in talks with Harmoko, the current leader of the MPR on the possible amendments of the 1945 constitution, and the possibility of a constitutional court and court reforms.

Update 23 - A Tragedy Befallen
12th of May 1998

First, it’s Bandung’s turn. Second, it’s Yogya’s turn. It is then expected for Jakarta to ride the waves of student revolution. Under the leadership of UI, Trisakti, Forum Kota, GMNI, along UNJ, UKI, UPN, UNTAR, they have finally consolidated and organized a plan to march throughout Jakarta. The wave of marching began from UNTAR grounds, cutting through West Jakarta right to the heart of it all, the planned goal of the MPR building. Yet, all was not well in such plans. Due to prior news of Bandung, Yogya, along with the questionable PMII fiasco, the central government was more well-prepared in dealing with possible unrest, installing many roadblocks along with deployment of BRIMOB in Central Jakarta. In addition, the Jakarta coalition is truly lacking in proper logistical and medical support, which resulted in lack of preparation along with lack of proper countermeasures against existing BRIMOB. As the protesters marched on Central Jakarta, they were greeted with shots of rubber bullets and tear gas with no actual countermeasures at the ready. Thus, the students have created the perfect chaos for the devil of opportunity.
The news of GMKI’s dumping of MDI has reached the farthest corners of Jakarta, fueling the underlying racial tension that has always existed between the Natives and Chinese, especially with the strong association of Christianity. Many bad faith actors along with Muslim extremists have taken it into their own hands that they will retribute under the name of God. Thus, many businesses are reportedly ransacked due to the current ongoing financial crisis, especially Chinese-owned businesses as a form of retaliation. Sadly, their hatred does not end there. Many of the Chinese have reported various cases of rape and violation due to this chaos. It is of the utmost disgust that they express such opportunism in this time of chaos. We state our sympathies with the victims and families, and we pray for their safety.

Update 21 - JAWA ADALAH KOENTJI 2.0?
28th of March 1998
With Bandung and Yogyakarta being even more heated with student protests, one of the Indonesian organizations that have mobilized its people is PMII. Their members in Surabaya and also Madura was mobilized by the PMII’s leader Syaiful, and with the prayers of the Nahdlatul Ulama Kyai’s and ulama they marched. Although surprising to PMII, because of the lack of coordination, consolidation, and also information to their own members only 10 PMII members came to the protest and 4 of the members got captured because of their lack of coordination. Botched protest or great martyrdom?

Update 20 - Djawa adalah Koentji!

28 March, 1998
UGM and USD have united in a coalition to organize a peaceful protest throughout Yogyakarta. With extensive and careful planning, waves upon waves of students have flooded the streets of Yogyakarta, shouting out chants of both disappointments and demands. In a orderly manner, thousands of students with red and white colours and parephenelia are marching to the Jogja Town Square, in an event that is being called as “Long March UGM”.
Police are standing by at the ready as anxiety builds. But as it seems, at least for now, the students of both Universitas Gadjah Mada and Universitas Sanatadharma are orderly voicing out their aspirations. “DOWN WITH SOEHARTO”, “DOWN WITH THE NEW ORDER”, “DOWN WITH CORRUPTION”. Now, Yogyakarta is entering the fold.

Update 19 - PASUNDAN AYEUNAH TEH KONCI
Shouts and screams fill the streets as a mass of thousands of people fill in the streets of Bandung. A populous crowd of what could be described as seas of men pour down from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, to Maranatha Christian University, to Institut Teknologi Bandung, all the way to Institut Teknologi Nasional Bandung in a wave of chants and demands. Students and workers, all wearing red and white paint and parephenelia chanting the 5 demands of the now infamous student movements.
The entirety of Northern Bandung grinds to a halt, as all it could do is witness the raw emotions and aspirations of its people. “DOWN WITH SOEHARTO”, “DOWN WITH THE NEW ORDER”, “DOWN WITH CORRUPTION”. While passing down Maranatha, reports have flooded that a large number of “female undergarments” have been thrown to Maranatha Christian University for allegedly refusing to join the movement.
Though the demonstration remains largely peaceful, police are still scrambled en mass as some scuffles along the long snake of demonstrators. The students now have the entire nation…no the entire world in its views. Is this the start of a new start?

Update 17 - The rise of MDI?
March 23, 1998
Signs of Islamic fervor have flooded the streets of Jakarta, this time under the flag of MDI (Majelis Dakwah Islam). A lot of the signs point to a shift in the voice of Islamic opinions, to the extent that public protests have been occurring on Kampung Melayu and Condet. These public activities are heavily divided, sometimes including elements of aggression. The police suspect that there is an underlying motive for the sudden upheaval in the Islamic community towards the status quo. Furthermore a reputable member of GMKI “Panji”, has been spotted directing alleged members of the MDI in various locations of heated protests. TNI POLRI has started an investigation on the case due to civil reports of disturbances.

Update 16 - Upheaval in Asem Baris
15th of January 1998

The recently reorganized FORUM KOTA (Jakarta) has taken measures to enact more disciplined and peaceful protests. However the lack of membership has resulted in several restructures resulting in an undermanned public protest. The lack of coordination has led to several protesters to become unruly and engage in direct violence with the police. The resulting tension was calmed by the moderation of several FORUM KOTA members. However, of note is that the incident occurred just outside of the Asem Baris headquarters of the students, leading some to believe that FORUM KOTA holds leadership. Others cited them as hooligans, the public is divided.
