Remember this: the need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear. Remember that. And know this: the day will come when all of these skirmishes and battles, these moments of defiance will have flooded the banks of authority and then there will be one too many. One single thing will break the siege.
Remember this: Try.

when iroh was a young man, he fell in love with a young woman in the court of his father, the daughter of one of the fire nation's administrators. although he was very aware that azulon would look down on a minor noble as a match for the crown prince, iroh eloped with the young woman and settled on ember island, attempting to wait out the fire lord's irritation with his eldest son's flash of rebellion.
the year they spent as newlyweds was one of the happiest of iroh's life, where he began to understand how many of ideals of the fire nation and his family were causing misery for so many -- particularly himself. the seeds of guilt were planted that year, although they would take many years, failures, and sorrows to grow to fruition.
sadly, it was the great joy of welcoming a child that ultimately parted iroh from his bride. her tragic, early death bringing lu ten into the world ironically meant that iroh was welcomed back to the fire nation court, but grief made iroh instead throw himself fully into the only pursuit that felt correct: fatherhood. although he ensured that lu ten received every benefit of being a prince, he also did all that he could to nurture the boy's curiosity, compassion, and sense of humor in the little ways that he knew that his mother would have done herself. lu ten grew into a young man that any father would have been proud of, but iroh felt it unfair to take any sort of singular credit. iroh had come to realize that a child should not be treated as a mere extension of their parents, and the joy he took in lu ten walking his own path with kindness and nobility was because of the boy's own sense of self.
so much like his mother's, which iroh had fallen in love with so many years before.
then years later, when standing before the collapsed outer wall of ba sing se in what was then an unprecedented triumph only to learn of his only son's death mere hours before -- iroh felt himself instead back on ember island as the funerary rites for his wife were read and an impossibly small bundle in his arms slept soundly as he tried to find a path forward. loss should have been familiar to him but instead, his son's death brought into sharp clarity how pointless so many of these losses had been, how much he had mindlessly followed what was expected of him by his family, his nation, his legacy.
and in the end, it had left him and so many others with nothing. once again, there was only one path forward that felt possible after such a realization, and that was away from the fire throne entirely.

by all definitions of the word, prince arthas menethil was killed the moment his hand touched frostmourne. the son of lordaeron had rushed towards the cursed sword in hopes of saving his kingdom and its people from the scourge only to instead start a pathway towards its destruction by his own hand.
frostmourne hungers, and arthas was doomed to be its first kill.
the runeblade shredded his soul into half as it did with all its victims. the 'good' and 'bad' halves is typically how this cleave is described, but in reality the split was arbitrary and thus far more damaging. positive and negative traits and impulses of the victim were severed, regardless of their intentions, resulting in its victims ( sylvanas, uther, and even arthas himself ) being left as shadows of themselves -- losing compassion and temperance but not the will for survival or justice.
however, a further splintering of arthas' soul was created by the helm of domination,
this ultimately resulted three fragments of the soul of arthas menethil by the end of the events of warcraft iii: one within frostmourne, one within the helm of domination, and one within his reanimated body as the death knight turned lich king.
after the defeat of the lich king by tirion fordring and subsequent destruction of frostmourne, zovaal the jailer reclaimed the souls claimed by the runeblade for use in his own machinations, particularly arthas' shard which he used to create a new runeblade: kingsmourne. this blade which zovaal attempted to control anduin wrynn as a new champion who would allow him to finally claim azeroth's nascent world soul and reorder the cosmos as he wished.
zovaal also reclaimed the fragment of arthas which had animated his body as a death knight and the lich king, using the soul of uther the lightbringer in order to deliver the soul to the maw personally -- counter to the great design of the shadowlands. this soul was combined with the shard within frostmourne to empower and control the young king of stormwind to zovaal's own plan.
however, anduin wrynn showed a strength of will that no one before him had been capable of, defeating the domination magic and ending the jailer's control which ultimately allowed azeroth's heroes to destroy zovaal at last. with the destruction of kingsmourne, the fragment of arthas' soul within it dissolved into oblivion, completely spent. uther, jaina, and thrall believed that the last of arthas was gone completely, a final destruction and the end of his story.
but the new arbiter of the shadowlands, a young kyrian named pelegos who believed no mortal being should be doomed eternally by the decisions made poorly in such short lives, did not believe that all of arthas menethil had been reclaimed by the kyrian renegades from icecrown citadel. the helm of domination had sat atop bolvar fordragon's head for years, sometimes whispering on zovaal's behalf but also dreaming -- dreaming of a young man so afraid of the heavy weight of the future on his shoulders, who knew that duty and honor and the needs of others always had to be greater than his own, that no king could reign forever.
when sylvanas destroyed the helm, the soul was scattered, left to wander throughout the spaces between worlds, lost and forgotten until pelegos happened to turn his head just right and find the final remnants of the soul of arthas menethil lost amidst the void.
it was not a question of redemption, but one of design. azeroth would need heroes, and many of them. elune had chosen to sacrifice the kal'dorei to aid her sister the winter queen, but pelegos instead chose to give azeroth a chance to stand firm against cosmic odds as it had done so many times before.
pelegos wanted to give a battered soul its own chance to heal, just as sylvanas windrunner and uther the lightbringer had been granted before arthas. it would be neither easy nor painless, and it might not be possible.
but hope would allow for the man to try and reclaim himself as he ought to have been -- and perhaps save azeroth after all.

i am gonna make it through this year if it kills me. / cassian
" spite gets you through a lot when it's all you've got. i won't pretend hope doesn't come up short when you might need it. that's not the answer that makes anyone happy, but it's reality. "
cassian might have gotten his hands on some corellian brandy. hard to say, but it was also very hard to be this bored on yavin 4 without anything else to do, so guesses could be made.
