I used to be mad about "whole language" reading approaches in theory but now I work with school-age kids and I am mad about it in practice.
#I AM a literacy and dyslexia specialist and YEP#my last job was in bringing structured phonics instruction into early literacy classes it is so so so important#and it's coming back!! thank god. but everything moves slow as hell in education :-)#also I'm in canada this is not a red/blue states issue sorry it's a whole pedagogical trend issue in western education at large#on the bright side you're doing it right. even if you don't have all the structured literacy training just starting at sound-it-out is grea#keep it up#and have patience I know it's hard but this + covid = a lot of older kids who can't read and they need us

lifeblogging and a quick record review -
been busy with lots of travel and new friends. wrote a whole EP's worth of songs, people at open mics are cool and nice and now I'm gonna jam with my new friends tomorrow and maybe make something of that. Trying to start seeds in my basement apartment but grow lights are expensive. I think I will try to find one on facebook marketplace but in the meantime I got one of those desk lamps that's supposed to mimic the sun to be better for your eyes or whatever and at it's brightest setting it's pretty comparable to the LEDs the guy in the youtube videos I watched said could work for starting seeds indoors so we'll try that for now. Saw the artist Kandle play a show on Wednesday and that was really good. Bought the record and I do recommend it for anyone who wants to listen to kinda bluesy/gothy Canadian indie pop. ghosting the salsa dancer but I have a date with a girl I met at an open mic next week I think we're gonna go to a record store.
