Thoughts about talking to conservatives after the no kings protest:

I really feel like the protests should have been more productive in an immediate, tangible, material way. The no kings protest was basically just an outdoor gathering to vaguely say that you didn’t vote for Trump. Other than that, it did little else.

It should have had clearer messaging about a smaller more specific issue. My trump supporter parents were asking me why I protested and I ended up looking like a fucking idiot.

I tried to talk to my Trump supporter mom about immigration. Here is what I learned:

. My mom is still very convinced of the general narrative that there is a wave of crime being committed by undocumented immigrants. It is going to be VERY difficult to break this narrative in her head because she doesn’t believe statistics.

. My mom is not fully convinced that there are non violent people still being unjustly punished anyway. This is another narrative that will be hard to get through to her.

Generally I was still a bit disappointed with no kings not really being productive or making a difference. I’m sick of being made to look stupid because when I try to have these conversations with my parents I get nervous and go into survival mode and they come out on top.

Obviously I have attended a no kings protest today and I generally support this.

Part of me wants to do something a bit more material. I want to know if any real changes can come from this type of action. It’s fun to go to a local park and protest on a Saturday you have off from work, but what specifically can we change?

I’m here for it I just want to do more than chant in a park.
