i do wonder how much of the derisive language you hear toward "resistlib winemoms" or whatever is just "people who grew up in Safely Blue Coastal Enclaves rebelling against ppl who remind them of their mom b/c they are emotionally stunted adults"

like, as A Child Of A Very Conservative Area, i have a very vivid recollection of the first time i encountered this type of person, and my reaction was mostly baffled delight. wait you're telling me this PTA mom with unassailable Wholesome Americana credentials is gassing up the cause of trans rights at her book club. you're telling me she's batting her eyelashes and "think of the children"-ing, except instead of doing that to promote some obnoxious "ban this book from the school curriculum" agenda, she's shaming her state representative into actually funding the damn schools? i do not care how cringe her UV-bleached "i'm with her" bumper sticker is or whatever, she is working extremely hard & successfully on shit i care about and i will brook no slander against her

Currently torn between believing that the government should do everything in its power to protect its citizens from gun violence and believing that the people have a right to use firearms to overthrow oppressive governments and resist tyranny.

We could have had a better timeline…

. J K Rowling could have stayed in her lane, not gone down a bigoted rabbit hole, and just been a beloved author who wrote some books that at least arguably had some anti racist messages for their time and good female characters for their time.

. J D Vance could have actually embraced what connection to rural, working class America he had and maybe ended up more progressive (all never trump republicans could have stood up to him and not bowed down)

. Elon musk could have not gone into politics, not gone down a bigoted rabbit hole, and just been the sort socially liberal rich guy that he used to be.

. Donald Trump could have stayed out of politics, not embraced the bigoted rabbit hole, and just stayed the rich, Clinton era New York Democrat that he used to be.

. Mark Zuckerberg could have not capitulated to Trump and the conservative base and just stayed a typical socially liberal rich guy.

. Kanye west could have stayed out of politics, actually cared for his mental health, not gone down bigoted rabbit holes, and just been content to be remembered as a sort of progressive rapper.

. Snoop Dogg could have not sexually harassed women, not given into homophobia, and not changed his mind about Trump. He could have just been known as a somewhat progressive anti-Trump rapper that he used to be (lots of rappers like Drake, Dr Dre, and R Kelly, and P Diddy could have also just not abused women) 🤷🏼‍♀️

. Michael Tait also could have just kept his hands to himself and not endorsed Trump.

. Nikki Minaj could have not defended rapists and just been know as a badass woman rapper.

. White women pop stars like Gwen Stefani, Miley Cyrus, and Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and Megan Trainer could have not committed cultural appropriation and actually done more for progressive causes instead of staying mostly silent for their conservative fans.

. Ruth Bater Ginsburg could have just retired when she had the chance.

We could have had a better timeline if just a few of these people had made better choices.

Also we could have had a better timeline if the Democratic Party had put more resources behind more left leaning candidates instead of Biden dropping out at the last minute.

One argument I’ve heard is that to persuade a right wing person you should use emotional anecdotes instead of facts and numbers. I still have my doubts that this is a good rhetorical move. In my experience, if a conservative senses that a left leaning person is trying to “emotionally manipulate” them they will not respond well and think you are being condescending and insincere.

What are other peoples thoughts? Have you ever changed another person’s mind about an issue? How did you do it?

being anti ai is making me feel like in going insane. "you asked for thoughts about your characters backstory and i put it into chat gpt for ideas". studies have proven its making people dumber. "i asked ai to generate this meal plan". its causing water shortages where its data centers are built. "ill generate some pictures for the dnd campaign". its spreading misinformation. "meta, generate an image of this guy doing something stupid". its trained off stolen images, writing, video, audio. "i was talking with my snapchat ai-" theres no way to verify what its doing with the information it collects. "youtube is impletmenting ai based age verification". my work has an entire graphics media department and has still put ai generated motivational posters up everywhere. ai playlists. ai facial verification. google ai microsoft ai meta ai snapchat ai. everyone treats it as a novelty. every treats it as a mandatory part of life. am i the only one who sees it? am i paranoid? am i going insane? jesus fucking christ. if i have to hear one more "well at least-" "but it does-" "but you can-" im about to lose it. i shouldnt have to jump through hoops to avoid the evil machine. have you no principles? no goddamn spine? am i the weird one here?

Since people in the notes are purposefully misunderstanding and misrepresenting my point, let me be more clear.

I still believe spanking kids is abhorrent. I made a promise to myself that I would never do it. I am not saying that her spanking me was ok or justified or that I deserved it.

What I am saying is that lashing out violently is morally wrong but predictable behavior for people under that degree of stress.

. You are not immune to falling for lazy, toxic parenting advice from a grifter if you are a stressed out, overworked, overstimulated parent.

My point in the post was not to justify, but to understand psychologically why most parents act that way.

On James Dobson’s death: spanking isn’t ok, but when you have kids you understand how frustrating it is.

For most of my brother and I childhood our mom was…

. getting divorced and re-married (a couple of times). While working through trauma as a rape and abuse survivor

. Dealing with judgement from the church for being divorced and remarried

. working full time

. Cooking every single meal for our family and cleaning up afterwards

. Cleaning the house

. Attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings

. Driving my brother and I to school, church, extra curricular activities including soccer, ballet, cheerleading, baseball, theatre, karate, etc every single day

. Paid for all of these extracurricular activities

. Taking care of our pets including scheduling vet appointments

. Planning our family trips and packing

. Went back to college and got another degree

. Doing all of the Christmas shopping, wrapping, decorating, cooking, planning, etc.

. Paid for the food, decorations, presents, etc. for holidays

. Cooking an over abundance of food every thanksgiving so everyone took home lots of leftovers

. Scheduled my brothers and my doctor’s appointments and drove us.

. Packing up everything and moving houses multiple times for a variety of reasons

. Helped my brother and I with our homework every night

. Answered our phone calls during her workday (even though it was usually just multiplication questions 🙄)

. Trying to lose her baby weight during the peak of 90’s-00’s diet culture

. Changing our diapers and potty training

. Her first husband and the father of her children died of fucking cancer

. Raising angsty teenagers while going through perimenopause

Of course my brother and I did our chores as kids to help out, and our stepdad helped pay for things, but if you mom did even HALF of this of fucking COURSE your mom had a temper and spanked you dumbass!

I still think spanking is abuse, but If your mom did even half of this you call her and thank her right now!
