i constantly think about the ending of "twisted", where the main character says he's always been frustrated by starry-eyed young idealists thinking they're going to change everything and fix the world, because he was that starry-eyed young idealist once, and he really did try and fight to make things better, and all he got for his trouble was being beaten down, constant cynicism and disillusionment with the people in charge, and things staying basically the same.

but he realizes at the end - he did change things. not everything, not as much as he wanted, but he was a good mentor to a young woman and definitely changed her life for the better, and a hard choice he made at a crucial moment prevented things from getting worse. and the young woman, who he sadly shook his head at because she had no idea how bad the world was, how hard it is to change things? she's continuing the work he started with all the gusto and passion he once had.

and he decides that it's a good thing people start out optimistic and naive and convinced they can change the world, because if they didn't, they'd be too discouraged and cynical to even try. the idealists almost all end up like him, forced to compromise and make small changes, but they start out determined to take on the world. and between the idealists and the cynics doing what they can, they manage to make things just a little better for the next generation, and if the cycle continues, maybe things really will become what they want them to be.

it is one of the best messages on activism and hope and progress i've ever heard. and it came out of an aladdin parody musical.
