I still cannot believe dan howell admitted to asking phil "would you still love me if I was a worm?"

one of my favorite things about witnessing dan's growth within his public persona is how he seems to have evolved his thinking about shame and entertainment.

I remember when dystopia daily first came back, I was happy for him that he was putting out videos again, and impressed with the high level of production, but dystopia daily did not hit for me then for this singular reason: shame.

he seemed genuinely ashamed of not just himself, but phil. that was the bit that turned me off the project and left a sour taste in my mouth. I know now that roasting each other is a big part of their banter, and now that I've seen more of their comedy duo stuff--hundreds of hours of it if you count the tour footage--I know he's not *actually* ashamed of phil. but at the time it felt like poor phil was getting treated as embarrassing and disposable and we, the audience, were all supposed to agree with this for some reason and laugh at it. because phil had by that point become my favorite comfort youtuber, you can understand why I wouldn't like that very much.

here's my guess at dan's original strategy with his rebranding in 2022: I think he felt he'd deeply over shared in the past, and so tried to hide everything authentic about himself except whatever specific point he was trying to laser focus on for that particular video. but, IMO, this was another kind of closeting. you can't try to make good standup with a battleship type of fake persona, where what is true/made-up constantly changes (unless that's deliberately the entire gimmick of the act).

it seems to me like he's now found a new kind of balance between truth and privacy where he doesn't have to pretend to be something he's not or cloak his relationship with phil under a layer of shame and dismissal while still maintaining privacy. he seems to be having fun with danandphilgames and the tour, so hopefully all his current projects propel him into more of his future goals :)

hmmm I hear they're rebranding the Dan and Phil games channel... I honestly have no idea where they're going with it?

it'll be some sort of new enterprise I know, but WHAT business thing is the question. if it were me, I'd push merch way more? maybe have more items in stock more often?

maybe they'll start a podcast and have gay guests? that'd be cool

It is genuinely WILD how close they keep getting to an Official Hard Launch without actually hard launching. DON'T you dare argue with me about what you think the hard launch was just play in this space okay. They managed to do a whole phregnancy announcement without actually implying they're together it's an art form.
