so this is bit of a personal post but it’s for something super important to me, seeing as it may affect my job, and should be for you too (disclaimer: i work for my local PBS and these views are my own)
trump overnight signed an executive order to defund PBS and NPR- two huge public media outlets
now you may be asking: what exactly is public media? and that’s a great question! before i started working in public media i didn’t really know much about it and why we need to protect it!
public media is noncommercial, meaning that its content cannot be influenced by capitalistic interests- sure it can have sponsors, but that’s different- think of it this way, you know how so many shows have blatant product placement for pop or alcohol or some type of product to sell; public media can’t have that! and sponsors cannot influence whatever content is being aired, they don’t have a say in what is being produced
public media is also federally funded, commercial media is not
so what does that mean?
first and foremost, even though public media is federally funded, the federal government has NO SAY in what is aired! how is that possible, if they’re funding it, you might be asking?
so quick history lesson- in 1967, there were a series of hearings on the state of media in the US and long (although quite fascinating) story short the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) was created! ALL federal funding for public media goes to CPB, which is a non profit organization whose board members are appointed by the president (earlier this week trump tried to fire the three biden appointees and was stopped in court!)
CPB then takes grant applications and sends funds to local stations- many, many of those stations are either NPR or PBS affiliated- BUT NOT ALL!
National Public Radio (NPR!) and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS!)- are two separate, national organizations, but much of their content comes from their smaller local affiliates. so for example, mr roger’s neighborhood aired on all PBS stations, but was produced by the pittsburgh affiliate
so currently, trump’s executive order is attacking PBS and NPR SPECIFICALLY
he, legally, cannot cut funding to PBS and NPR without congressional approval- funds allocated to PBS and NPR go through CPB, which is congressionally funded
so what’s he doing?? this is part of a LARGER plan- he is trying to defund ALL public media, and currently is trying to get congress to clawback funding to CPB for the next two years
so why is this important to you?
in a time where media is becoming increasingly biased, public media is taking a stand to be on the side of the public
public media, for another quick history lesson, is rooted deeply in education and yearns to increase public awareness and education (hence programs like PBS Kids!)
public media doesn’t end there tho! in many rural areas, public media may be all people have access to. or if you don’t have cable, you still get pbs. or if you don’t want to pay to read an article on your phone, you still npr. or if you want emergency alerts about weather, that comes to through public media.
so what can you do?
to learn more, you can visit protectmypublicmedia.org
you can donate to your local PBS or NPR stations, perhaps if you know your station is well funded privately (as will likely be the case for my big city friends here, maybe find a smaller, rural station to support)- remember watching pbs and the commercial would always say “paid for in part by viewers like you!”? this is where you get to be one of the viewers like you!
if you can’t donate, which i totally understand, trust me, make your voice heard! show support to PBS and NPR on social media, call/mail your congresspeople, tell your friends about what’s happening- just don’t stay silent
if you made it this far, i appreciate you so much and thank you for reading all this

I decided to sketch the voice lines from game to understand what makes Snatcher.. well Snatcher?
And then I realized that it would be funny if his peculiar legal sense of humor hadn't changed over the centuries. Because why fix something that isn't broken? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
(By his exceptionally correct opinion)

This!! What's been done to the IMLS is causing great harm. Libraries, museums, and archives are already being affected. We need to protect the preservation and sharing of information and artifacts of historical and cultural significance.
I feel like "trump wants to throw away literal dinosaur fossils" would really turn heads if we actually had a functional opposition party in this country to get messages out, but I guess I'll just have to get a paint pen and write it on my car. fine, I'll do it.
#Also libraries offer many public programs for the community!#So thats something else to think about#librarians#archivist#museums#imls

Something that really stuck with me while I was playing Mass Effect 2, and that I feel was so important to understanding the relationship between Shepard and Garrus, whether you romance him or not, is that Garrus is your only companion from ME1 who never moved on.
You died. The crew watched you die. Assumedly they grieved you, there was a funeral service, there were tears and all five stages of grief. Things were rough, but eventually life took on a shade of normalcy again.
Kaiden/Ashley got reassigned and continued their work for the alliance. Liara fights tooth and nail to get your body to Cerberus, but then it’s out of her hands and she becomes an information broker. Tali goes back to the Floatilla, like she was always supposed to. Wrex becomes a clan leader. And yes, they’re all fundamentally changed by their time on the Normandy, but no one seems as stuck as Garrus Vakarian.
Because he doesn’t go back to the Citadel. He doesn’t join the Turian Hierarchy. He ships himself off to Omega, one of the most dangerous places he could be, and makes a life out of pissing off the most dangerous people there. It’s kind of a suicide mission, especially after what happened with Sidonis. He kind of figures he’s going to die doing this, but what else can he do?
There is no normalcy for Garrus in a world without Shepard, and I think that’s why he’s always immediately ready to come back to the Normandy. The Normandy, and Shepard, are home for Garrus and that’s why I think romancing him feels like the natural conclusion for so many femme Sheps, because Shepard feels that way too.
Of all the companions, no one needs Shepard to live more than Garrus, and no one needs Garrus more than Shepard. They’re perfectly matched, as lovers, as friends, as soldiers, as whatever they are in your universe and when you’re that perfectly matched with someone, you never quite feel whole without them.
No Shepard without Vakarian.

Oh, okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don’t know, that gaslight gatekeep girlboss meme, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you think modern feminism has been co-opted by corporations. But what you don’t know is that that meme is not from Instagram, it's not from Twitter, it's not from Tiktok, it’s actually from Tumblr. You’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in January 2021, Tumblr user missnumber1111 posted, "today's agenda: gaslight gatekeep and most importantly girlboss." And then I think it was a-m-e-t-h-y-s-t-r-o-s-e, wasn’t it, who reblogged it with an image of the phrase edited over a piece of "Live, Laugh, Love" wall art? And then gaslight gatekeep girlboss showed up in the feeds of eight different Twitter repost accounts. Then it filtered down through Instagram and then trickled on down into some tragic “alt side of Tiktok” where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that meme represents millions of notes and countless Tumblr users and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from Tumblr when, in fact, you’re wearing the meme that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of “stuff.”
