I love this, I wonder how this would affect Naruto in he academy and as a genin, because I just know Iruka would’ve made him study and take the lessons seriously since canonically Naruto was a really bad student. Plus I totally think this would change the dynamics of his relationship w/ his students (Sasuke’s spec). Lowkey think he would be a bit more involved in their lives and take take a more direct approach when guiding them. Sasuke especially after the Uchiha massacre cuz he was close to Shisui, and probs knew a bit about Itachi. With that, I think that his students would be very protective of him whenever anyone would try to talk badly about him (Naruto esp). Like Kakashi trying to antagonise him and be surprised that his team would come to Iruka’s defence.
kakairu age swap (with some shiiru on the side for me)!! bratty 8 yr old kakashi HAAAAATES iruka bc he's expected to do great things but never meets that potential. the side shiiru is bc 1) i think shisui being iruka's friend is really fun (mirrors sakumo and obito at the same fucking time) and 2) i'm imagining him going "oh. you haven't experienced the iruka effect yet" which is the effect in which iruka makes you smile. and 3) shisui's age is ??? so i can make him iruka's age in canon compliant and in aus heheheh
more details ab this au by @bewinsome in the replies on this post that i'm giggling like a loon over. the angst potential. the conflict!!! the way we could have iruka adopt naruto when he's like 4/5 bc iruka's 26 now at the start of canon!!!! augh i wanna write it!!
also doodled this, it's the morning after the attack. iruka is still inside, kakashi out. this only changes iruka's chunin promotion age to 14. i wanted doodle hiruzen telling kakashi that iruka lost his parents but hm

When people list the persons who 'impacted' Naruto the most, they often mention Jiraiya and Hinata but completely overlook Iruka, which annoys me to no end.
I know Iruka doesn't appear much in the manga, but he was the first to show care and love for Naruto. He was the first person to verbally acknowledge him—not just the first adult, but the first person overall. Iruka is one of the people Naruto loves the most. From the very beginning to the end, Iruka is consistently mentioned among Naruto's precious people, with Sasuke being second.
Iruka is Naruto's family, and the fact that people 'forget' this is really upsetting. Iruka is the person who was always there, always. No amount of retcon (yes, I'm talking about the last movie) will ever change that.
While we're on the topic, Hinata didn't give Naruto a family; they founded a family together. That's actually quite different. And anyway, he already had a family. Their names are Iruka and Sasuke. 'Naruto Gaiden' heavily emphasized the idea that blood isn't necessary to have a family, at least for Naruto.

I hope my message reaches you. I'm Mohammed from Gaza. I'm writing to you with a broken heart. I'm deeply sorry if this message has upset you, but as a father, I feel hopeless and exhausted. However, I hold on to the hope that you will read my words to the end and offer a helping hand. The war has returned, and we have been displaced once again. Now, we live in a dilapidated tent under horrific bombardment, with no food to eat. Prices have skyrocketed after aid was cut off and the borders were closed. Please, I beg you - 🙏💔 Help me, my family, and my children. We are in desperate need of flour and milk, which cost about $150. If you can donate as 20 25 40 50 or even any dollar much as you can, it will save the lives of a family and children who have been displaced dozens of times. 🙏🙏

While i do think that making Mizuki and Iruka childhood friends is a bit odd, i think that what the anime might be trying to show with the friendship is that even if Iruka had someone close to him, he probably went through a case of emotional/intimate(???) isolation. Sort of like a person can still feel lonely even with close people with them.
The fact that he feels this isolation is quite odd when you read the manga and learn that Iruka is actually quite popular in the village, socialising quite a bit with the villagers. But upon thinking about it, it makes sense as this behaviour/way of life is certainly directly related back to the Nine Tails attack and witnessing the deaths of his parents.
I think most people forget how traumatic and brutal the Nine Tails attack is to regular people who witnessed it. Being a kid, Iruka probs didn’t know much about what was happening or the reality of the attack, but had the general belief that his parents would be alright cause they’re powerful Shinobi. At least until he hears about what’s happening during the attack and runs over to try and help his parents, only to watch them die. Given the fact that he was likely the only (pre-genin) kid there, who probs still had a narrow view of the world, seeing his parents, people he looked up so much to reduced like that leaves an impact. Leaving him feel so powerless and utterly destroyed emotionally.
that event sets him apart from other pre-genin kids as most if not all of the kids were in shelters with Iruka being the only one to witness his parents dying, even having his mother die in his arms. the truth is, no one can really relate to him and what he's been through, or at least thats what Iruka thinks. This isolation he feels then becomes a major part of his life since then, sticking to him until his and Naruto's confrontation with Mizuki. Probs going along with the belief, if i don't let people get too close to me, i won't have to feel that pain ever again.
That doesn't stop him from being a good person though, helping out people around the village, whether that's just his personality/good faith or as a way to distract himself and others about the lack of any close bonds. but even with this emotional distancing from other people, he can't help but feel some things for his students, namely Naruto.
This sort of thing adds to the parallels between Naruto and Iruka to the point where I think a lot can be discussed when it comes to Iruka’s isolation and Naruto’s relationships with the Konoha 12 before their graduation from the Academy and the Chūnin exams. And maybe Sasuke's too if we actually think about it.
tbh im not really. i don't really think Mizuki and Iruka were great friends, as that was anime filler, fabricated to stay on air.
like, i love Mizuki as an antagonist, don't get me wrong. i just, don't believe Iruka was more than his coworker, due to what we're given in chapter 1.
THAT ALL SAID. i really do enjoy the way Iruka and Mizuki have the potential to mirror Kakashi and Obito? and the way the anime made it so that Mizuki was an Orochimaru goon, and so it pairs up neatly with Sasuke being an Orochimaru goon. there's smth tasty there.

The fact that I can totally see kid Kakashi pouncing on Jiraiya from the darkness like Foxy from Fnaf!
The poor bastards have their work cut out for them. They’d rather be at war than deal with Kakashi again.

TBH i can see this sort of thing continuing on even into the GO era. with this pattern being around for so long, its probable that even after the events of the OG series, there would still be some notable distance between the father and children. while yes, Gouenji's dad would be off his back about quitting soccer, but that wouldn't fix all the repressed grief that's present in their dynamic for years. And what's worse, Shuuya would've long learned to avoid broaching his father cause it's just something he got used to.
As for Yuuka (or Julia in the English dub), she probs would've noticed things as she grew older. I think they could have a different relationship compared what her father and brother have but the dynamic is still there. i think she would've eventually become frustrated too by the distance between them, especially as she got into their teen years and spent most of her time around her brother instead of home.
Inazuma Eleven (OG) Headcanons: Gouenji!
In canon, Gouenji acts pretty calm, level-headed, and pretty non-violent.
I have this headcanon that before his mother's fateful, sad death and his drift and distance from his father, he was a bit more expressive and joyful. Not that present Gouenji is depressed or such, but that he's simply not as happy as he used to be. He was joyful and smiled more back then, but because of grief affecting his father—even though Shuuya was also grieving—his father grew bitter, distant, and avoidant of his son. Gone were the days when little Shuuya would go up to his father and just chatter with him, where now, they would usually only have small talk.
Shuuya still has an awkward, rocky relationship with his father—dulled by grief, loss, and pain, that his father refused to express and show such vulnerability to the rest of the family. His father had to put his own feelings away for his children. It was to support his two children amidst his wife and their mother's death. But...while he attempted doing so, he got lost in his own pain and said pain inflicted more damage onto his son and daughter.
Shuuya feels somehow abandoned by his father at times, feeling that he wasn't the same anymore. His father was emotionally constipated. He couldn't—no, he wouldn't talk to his own son honestly and transparently anymore.
And that tore a hole in Shuuya's heart that he never realized was there.
He knew that deep, deep, down, his father still loved him. But his heart kept telling him otherwise that his relationship with his father would never be reconciled—that they would forever be alike to fire and gasoline. Fire and gasoline just blows up in your face, just like his past attempts to address his father's suppressed grief and pain—trying to be the adult, trying to be the therapist to his father. He just kept trying and failing to get his father to be honest, vulnerable, and aware of everyone else's grief. But to no avail, he let himself be shut in.
And Shuuya felt even more distant from his father. The pain that set in his heart. He couldn't bear to unload on anyone. But what could he do? He was practically hopeless.

I totally believe that in a modern AU of Naruto, Iruka would've been a punk/goth kid at one point and be very heavy into that scene. Like to the point when looking at old photos of him when he was around the same, people would've confused him for Sasuke, especially when he first got into it.
He wore a lot of grungy clothes and stuff (think a black and white stripped long sleeves under a graphic t-shirt alongside cargo pants), but primarily went all out with piercings. He started getting piercings around 14-15 after he pierced his ears before quickly advancing up the lobe until he got his nose rings and cat/snake bites. He does have a few tats, but only when he's eighteen and mostly in less visible areas like his ribs and back cause he doesn't want to be as blatant with them as he is with the piercings. Maybe makeup too, such as eyeliner and eyeshadow too but probs not nail polish cause he'd probably think its too much effort just to do them for a few days before he has to wipe them off. I can totally see him experimenting with them otherwise.
I'd also like to imagine he smokes too, given that he had taught Naruto and the Konoha 12 but that's beside the point.
He tones down his style when he becomes a teacher, taking out most of his piercings and wears the typical teacher attire, he still keeps aspects of the style when he's out and about on his own. Like wearing most of his piercings (some closed up) and wearing loose sleeveless shirts that shows off his tattoos (and muscles). I'd like to think he'd wear his hair down too as an adult but that's just me. Again, most people who knew him wouldn't recognise him off the street until really looking at his face and see his scar.
Very few people really know about this phase of his life, the only people who do would be Teuchi, Ayame, Hiruzen and Mizuki, with the latter being the one who more or less influenced him into styling himself this way. Mostly as a way to make fun of him but it actually became something that Iruka really liked, which secretly infuriated Mizuki but this isn't known until their falling out later.
IDK if it would actually fit him tho but given that he was a bit of a goofball and troublemaker as a kid but it does fit in with the early punk aspects that were present in the manga.

Hi ,
My name is Shada, I’m 24 years old, a new nurse graduate from Gaza 🇵🇸, and I’m reaching out in the hope that you might take a moment to hear my story.
I gave birth to my baby boy, Adam , in the middle of this war. He is now 5 months old. We’ve lost everything—our home was destroyed, and my husband’s work as a water truck driver is gone. We have evacuated multiple times, and today we live in a crowded tent camp 🏕️, not knowing where we’ll go next.
On top of everything, Adam was born with clubfoot and needs urgent surgery 🏥 that cannot be done in Gaza—not now, not even before the war. He also needs special medical boots afterward.
We’re trying to raise funds to evacuate to safety and give our son a real chance at life.
If you’re able to donate 💌 or even just share our campaign 🔁, please know it would mean the world to me. I want to live, work, and raise my family in peace. I don’t want to lose my son or my husband.
Thank you so much for reading 🌿
@suppirtadamfil
With hope and gratitude,
Shada 🤍

Hi there 🌼
I hope it’s okay that I’m reaching out. My name is Rola, and I’m a mother of two from Gaza. Life used to be simple—filled with laughter, home-cooked meals, walks with my children, and ice cream on weekends. But since October, everything has changed.
We lost our home in a bombing. One moment, we were sipping coffee on the balcony… the next, the house shook, windows shattered, and our world collapsed. We had to flee with nothing—no clothes, no toys, no sense of safety.
My children still ask about their beds, their books, their quiet little room. I don’t have answers. All I can do is hold them and keep going.
We’re now raising funds to evacuate—or, if returning becomes possible, to rebuild. I just want to give my children a future that isn’t defined by fear and loss.
If you’re able to help—by donating or even just sharing our story—it would mean everything 💛. Your kindness can bring us one step closer to healing.
Thank you for listening. And if you'd prefer not to receive messages like this, just let me know and I won’t reach out again.
With love and hope,
Rola | @rolafamily 🤍

I totally get this. Given that Naruto never had anyone around him outwardly care for him, alongside being a naturally oblivious person in general, small acts like going out for ramen, while significant in Naruto’s relationships with the people closest to him, probably wouldn't clarify anything about the nature of said relationships. Kiba, Shikamaru and Choji joined him while he was causing trouble but that doesn't mean they were friends. They didn't even start to like him until the Chuinn exams, until after he had proved himself to earn their respect, only then their friendships with them grew. All that is evident before they even graduate from the academy.
Its only with Iruka and then Sasuke that the depth of their relationships are established. With someone willing to sacrifice their lives for him, that more or less becomes the ultimate form of love and connection for Naruto. More so later on when he learns that both his parents and Jiraiya died for him.
It also hurts that Hinata’s sacrifice for him was all that acknowledged after Pain’s attack. Like, girl knew she was probably going to die but still went there to protect Naruto and help him. Like it makes sense that his meeting with his parents would overshadow the scene but it still should've been resolved later on when things calmed down enough and not sorted out in the background.
There are reasons that Naruto puts Iruka and Sasuke above everyone. Like all the other fans have said, they sacrifice themselves for Naruto’s life when he was a nobody, an outcast no one wanted to get in touch with.
While reading the manga, I found the similarities between these two people’s sacrifices.

Naruto, the kid, was not someone who would expect people to treat him well. He was used to people neglecting him and him earning the attentions from them. There were not just some moments of underdogs getting someone attentions but also a little child’s deep earning was answered.
He had learnt not to expect in order not to get hurt by others.
There must have been some time that he got neglected or bullied and hoped people would have come and saved him, but there were no one.
Therefore, when Iruka and Sasuke came forward, to save him from difficulties and pain without him requesting, to value him more than their own lives, that’s his dream coming true. Someone did value him.
He mattered.
On the other hand, I would never watch the Last. How could anyone think Naruto would value people giving him attentions secretly and not doing things to improve his situation at all? That’s exactly why Kakashi and Sakura never rise to Iruka and Sasuke level in his heart. (Kakashi is closer to his heart of course.) Both of their attentions are earned, in his eyes. Even though Kakashi would protect him all the time, care about his well-being and education, and bring him vegetable, and Sakura would care for him in her own ways, they would never be closer to Iruka and Sasuke. (Sorry, Kakashi Sensei. I do love you very much. It’s just fact.)
Even bringing Naruto some cookies would be better than nothing. How could you claim to love someone and not do anything? Naruto literally do something for Gaara when he tried to kill for him for several times just because he understood his pain.
And Naruto was moved? Hn…
If you experienced someone’s love, you wouldn’t want anything less than it, especially after he knew how much Iruka, Sasuke, his own parents, and even Jilaiya loved him and sacrificed for him. He might be selfless but not stupid.
Haku incident was the reason of Naruto’s nindo. He didn’t want to use people as tools. He wanted to protect his previous people. He would do anything for people he loved and he understood the idea of sacrificing everything for loved ones.

Going to the same place with his loved one after death. Don’t know where our boy, Naruto, got this idea but maybe there was something…

And this was the panel when they visited their graves before leaving.

After knowing that shinobis were viewed as tools, he absolutely didn’t agree and decided to go on his own ways.
Does it sound like someone who would be moved by some little girl who liked him but said nothing or did nothing for him?
Well…
So many details when I read Japanese version. Maybe it’s because I literally need to read panels by panels. I am still not really fluent in Japanese.
#uzumaki naruto#naruto iruka#iruka umino#hinata hyuga#sasuke uchiha#i never put much thought into the nature of naruto’s closest ties like that#but its so layered#it really makes you understand why he was so passionate abt sasuke#besides the possible/likely romantic feelings
