I just think that psychologically Alastor is an extremely interesting character. No one decides “just like that” that smiling all the time is the only way to show true strength and I really want to find out what happened to him and made him build all these walls around himself.

While We wait for . . .

With Hazbin Hotel being picked up by A24, the first season of Hazbin Hotel isn’t too far off in the future.  In the mean time we have Helluva Boss episodes to look forward to and other adult animated shows to enjoy while we wait.

Below is a list of Adult Animated Comedies that isn’t just about sex jokes and crude humor, but tells a deeper story with third dimensional characters.

Gary is an astronaut doing time in isolation on a space station and while the loneliness is eating away at him, a strange creature he dubs Mooncake, befriends him and sends him on an intergalactic adventure against an evil warlord, corrupt military, and assassins.  It’s a fun buddy show that has surprising gut wrenching moments!

This series took me by surprised.  I was expecting it to be a rip off of Futurama, but got more than I bargain for in emotional trauma and strong storytelling.  

The many adventures of Grandpa Rick and his grandson Morty as they travel to other worlds and dimensions via Rick’s portal gun.  It comes across as adventure of the week, but there are adult themes such as a suffering marriage, trauma, depression, mental health, and toxicity which is handle bluntly to the audience and the characters.

Top secret agent Archer deals with office drama, rivalry, romance, and politics while working for his overbearing mother and sassy no nonsense love interest.  It initially begins as mission of the week, but later seasons have an overarching plots with familiar characters.  The animation is unique and the dialogue is the hilarious you’ll ever see in any tv show.

This would be categorized as an adult comedy, but I does have the same themes as Hazbin Hotel that I had to include it on this list.

Back in the 90′s, HBO had this short lived show created by the legendary Ralph Bakshi.  It was a futuristic noir anthology series with storyteller femme fatale, Raven.  From online romance, a detective looking for a missing girl, to prostitutes being exploited, it covered a lot of heavy themes for a cartoon in the 90′s.  Sadly, this was a show before its time and only lasted six episodes.   

Bojack Horseman began his career as a leading actor of a popular 90′s sitcom and is trying to reclaim his former glory while dealing with depression, mental health, an abusive childhood, and struggling with romance.  Bojack isn’t a nice person, but we root for him all the same.  This series covers a huge list of adult issues and the toxic cut throat atmosphere of Holly Wood and show business. 

Harley Quinn finally calls it quits with the Joker and goes it alone with her own team to make a name for herself as a villainess while realizing she has feelings for longtime best friend Poison Ivy.  This series if a love letter to older DC fans with its adult take on familiar and fan favorite characters from the DC comics.  

While it’s an adult comedy with craziness and jokes, it does cover the problems women face to be taken seriously in their chosen careers, abusive partners, misogyny, and fulfilling relationships.  

Brothers, Hank and Dean, travel with their not so scientific scientist father across the world while getting into hijinks with their blood thirsty bodyguard Brock Samson.  The show covers the themes of failure, struggling to live up to impossible expectations, and finally finding success.  The series has been cancelled, but there is a huge campaign to get it back for another season to conclude it.
