Recently we volunteered with a Grade 2-3 class at ‘Balay Sofia’, an amazing local Waldorf school. Sharmaine, their teacher and our friend/host in Baguio, led a lesson about the abundance of resources in our environments, and in groups we built homes for fairies using what we could find in the forested playground. It was powerful to see the holistic learning these children were receiving, and an energizing opportunity to foster education through play. We had a wonderful day 🦋 (en Balay Sofia. After a 2-day sprint in Manila (including an Emergent Theatre workshop), we’ve travelled north to the city of Baguio. We’ve been riding Jeepneys (look them up!), experiencing how the bioconstructed Ililikha Artist Village disrupts the city’s status quo, and learning about the indigenous peoples of this region and their beautiful handicrafts. Our home for this time is a classroom in the inspiring Waldorf school ‘Balay Sofia’. We’ll be very sad to leave Baguio City! (at Baguio City)

We’ve been anticipating our internship with our Philippines travel guide. In just two days we set off on our journey towards the Philippines (or ‘as Filipinas’, as they are called here in Brazil). We are not quite ready to make the switch from Portuguese to Tagalog & Cebuano, but we’re working on it!

Breakfast makes every meeting better! During our Philippines internship, we’ll challenge each other to get far outside our comfort zones with gincana-style missions. Planning these challenges, as you can probably guess, has turned out to be very fun.

Hey, I’m Robbie! I’m 20 years old and from Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦. I was attracted to both YIP and the Philippines internship because I’m excited about the idea of gaining practical experience with passionate people to learn through&about holistic education 👩🏽‍🏫. Reading Mission’s website (http://imaginalmission.net) and learning about the projects going on there, particularly Y-NOT, really spoke to me 🗣. My personal intention is to develop, design and understand the intricacies of long-term educational processes. My friends did an internship in the Philippines a couple years ago; they told me they learned so much, the work was very grounded, there were many incredible initiatives and the people were very kind 🤙. Recently, I’ve been engaging with learning about education, healing, art and engineering 👷🏾👩🏼‍🎨. In the Philippines, I can contribute by activating my education passion outwardly, through workshops. I am potentially also interested in applying my computer science background towards Mission’s purpose 💻. #obsessedwitheducation? #yip10 #ynotlife2018 (at YIP (International Youth Initiative Program))

Hi, I’m Mackenzie! I’m 19 years old and from New Hampshire, USA 🇺🇸. For me, YIP is an opportunity to learn more about the world around me and to build the skills needed to take initiative 🌎. I find the Philippines such an interesting country and is very different from the culture that I am used to. The Y-NOT program initiatives and the bamboo bike project sound fascinating to me 🚴. I am passionate about sports education and the positive effects of being active. Additionally, I’m passionate about human rights and labor practices. I am interested in sharing my knowledge for sports and would also like to apply some of my facilitation skills. #yip10 #ynotlife2018 (at YIP (International Youth Initiative Program))
