“You would be and I would have had to correct the oversight,” she said, as if it was the most obvious thing in the galaxy. Luckily for the First Order, they never had to remind each other or check up on each other to know the job was getting done. Though there was that undercurrent of concern for burning the candle at both ends. Perhaps not spoken aloud, but it was there. Especially given Phasma’s proclivity for walking circuits around the base in full armor and Hux spending his nights poring over intel and sitreps. 

Phasma had been relatively quick to gain a reputation of harsh but fair. Rewards weren’t uncommon but neither were they handed out like mere sweets. She had carefully cultivated her leadership style, and in the process had made herself separate from her predecessor and his rather lackluster performance towards the end. Everything reflected the boost in unit cohesion and skill in battle that she had caused in the troops. She was personally watching a handful of troopers to push them into the command track to perhaps vie for her position one day. 

“Exactly my thinking,” she said with a slight bob of the head. “Perhaps even extra allowance if necessary.” She was willing to pull out all the stops on Hux’s behalf in his personal mission that just happened to coincide with First Order goals and thus she did not resist his desire for the ships in question. If he had been wanting a simple pleasure barge there would have been no cooperation. “There are lots of scenarios to consider however, and I hope you realize there might be a number of false starts or failures before getting what you want.”

“You’re welcome. I only speak truly.”

Hux squared his shoulders. 

“Oh, have no worries about that. I am already making long term contingency plans for the continued success of the Order, rest assured. I would be remiss if I wasn’t.”

He tilted his head slightly at her mention of her scouts, and made a pleased sound. 

“That would be most excellent. A debriefing would works best- if they can provide me with something sufficient enough to start narrowing down sectors, I think some liberty would be offered as reward. Help refresh their memories a bit.”

His expression was odd at her statement- a mix of appreciation and pride and something guarded.

“Thank you, Phasma.”

Phasma was a female Captain of the First Order. She served as part of the unofficial commanding triumvirate for the First Order and their Starkiller Base operation, taking charge of the command of the First Order’s stormtrooper soldiers. During the First Order–Resistance conflict, which took place 30 years after the Battle of Endor, Phasma served alongside the dark enforcer Kylo Ren and General Hux in their efforts against the Resistance. “Not quite what I was meaning. More that the Order should continue well after I’m gone and I can insure it by training the next generation and they can train the generation after that. I’m here until my last breath, I just don’t know when that might be so I am always prepared for the eventuality.” 

“I had a scouting party near the outer rim last month,” she mused mildly. “They might still remember something, a murmur perhaps, of ships floating listlessly or what have you.”

She pushed her cloak back entirely over her shoulders, offering a slight but firm nod. 

“Faith should never be broken, and you have it in spades.”

“What, do you expect not to last that long? Surely you have more faith in yourself than that, my dear Captain,” Hux said wryly. 

He sobered. 

“No, I know that Pellaeon wouldn’t have hidden them where the Republic could reach them. Treaty or not, there were certain things even a soft, fallen Admiral would have refused to given up,” he said firmly. “And I know that the last places Pellaeon had taken command at before he retired was Yaga Minor, or Bastion. Both are in the Outer Rim. It’d be best to start there.”

He gave Phasma a small, but genuine smile.

“Thank you.”
