COMPULSORY QN 2
My artistic vision is: I am an experimental designer who is good with coming up with creative concepts for projects, as well as a curious photographer who looks at the world through a unique lens. I want to become an art director or photojournalist in the next 5 years. I want to continue to expand my knowledge and skills, as well as gain as much experience as I can interning in different sectors. I can do this by applying for various internship opportunities to gain insight into how each department works, as well as expand my experience by entering different photography competitions etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One project that I draw a lot of inspiration from is Carlos Alba’s “Midnight Sun”. It is a photography project that highlights the issue of light pollution through his own perspective. He travels to cities which use a lot of urban lighting and neon, fluorescent lamps and L.E.D lights such as Seoul, Hong Kong, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. He says that although he sees the benefits of having lights that are essential in improving safety and crime prevention, his research also points to the fact that light pollution can lead to serious and irreversible impacts on humans, plants and animals. However, the city's inhabitants are oblivious to the way they are put at risk when exposed to the lights. He aims to create a visual mapping that can be a very useful tool for public decision-makers who want to act decisively on this problematic phenomenon, as well as for citizens who wish to raise their level of awareness.
I find this project very inspirational as the photos he takes can be quite artistic and abstract, yet there is a clear theme and reason behind him taking these photos. His use of reflections, long exposures etc make the compositions a lot more interesting, whilst he also uses some still portraits of the citizens of the city, each photo telling a whole story, supporting the overall intention of his project. As someone who likes to experiment with abstract photography, I find his work in line with what I would like to do in the future, using my photography skills to draw attention to issues that connect with society.
I believe that I am actually already doing something similar in terms of using photography under the theme of social engagement. For our Image specialist project, we have to choose a place, person or phenomenon to document and shed light upon. Something that I noticed is that there are a lot of large empty areas where it is not being put to use. This made me question why these spaces were not being utilised well, with some spaces even having restrictive and prohibitive signs to discourage members of the public from using them. This in particular made me want to focus more on documenting these kinds of empty, under-utlised spaces, to make viewers question why public spaces are not being used to their full potential, especially in a small country with land scarcity.

COMPULSORY QN 2
For our group manifesto, we each decided to share one key point that we tell ourselves during our creative process or as designers, and express it visually in our own way. We then came together to create a collage for our full manifesto, showing our own thoughts in our own way. I believe that by doing so, the manifesto speaks to a wider range of designers, as my group mates and I all have different beliefs and processes that are expressed through this collaborative manifesto.
For my personal manifesto, it all centres around the main idea of to keep pushing myself and to not stop trying, as this is a core belief that I hold on to as not only a designer but as an individual too. My 3 points all remind myself to keep designing and to not be discouraged, as designing things brings me joy and I enjoy what I am doing. By keeping my manifesto at heart, I believe that I will continue to be able to grow my skills and my character as a designer, helping me in my learning journey.
(See Image Description for Martin Parr's "Ten rules of photography for emerging photographers")
The most significant takeaway from CTS-B for me is whenever we talk about connecting our self identity to our design identity. I believe that this has had a big impact on me, as I now remind myself to integrate my personal identity and beliefs into my projects, to show who I am not just a designer but as a person as well. I now have more confidence in developing my work, and am proud of my design “aesthetic” as I believe that I can use my design works to represent my beliefs and values. This is also seen through my personal manifesto, where I remind myself to never stop creating and pushing myself, and whenever I feel discouraged when facing creative blocks to remind myself why I like design and started doing it in the first place- as a form of expression to represent my identity and beliefs.
I find myself connecting this to my other modules more, especially in regards to using my works to represent who I am and what I want to convey. For example, In our studio project, we are to come up with a branding concept for the Singapore Architecture Festival. The concept that I came up with revolves around the idea of speculative architecture- where it investigates possible landscapes scenarios for the future, a concept that relies heavily on imagination and pushing the boundaries. This concept highlights my adventurous and experimentative personality, as I love to be creative and imagine possibilities that have not yet been explored- pushing the boundaries of what can and cannot be created.

WEEK 03: This Is How You Connect Practice with Society
My main takeaway from this week’s lesson was how we can apply our design skills in a collaborative way that enables and benefits society or a community. Through the class activity, I got to have a discussion with my classmates about social issues in the Singaporean context, and was able to hear different points of views on what everyone found important to bring up. Even through watching my coursemates' mini documentaries, I was able to broaden my perspective on how design can be used to raise awareness for certain issues, which in turn can benefit different communities.
Personally, I have always seen design as a tool that may be of use in the marketing, advertising or branding sector, but this week’s lesson has shown me that design can be used in even broader areas, and can be connected to society. The various references shown in the slides especially were interesting to me, as it was a collaboration and a direct connection of upcycling, design, and handcraft all in one, and it was interesting to see how design is not just limited to graphic design, but also physical design for society. It shows that design is interconnected to society and even other disciplines that we may not think are related to design at first thought. For a wide scale project that aims to help build something for the community, many disciplines and industries will be required to work together on the same project. For example, one project aiming to help build more facilities for the elderly would require designers, architects, community workers, engineers and many other disciplines to collaborate together to make the project come to life.

WEEK 02: This Is How You Connect Theory and Practice
The main takeaway from today’s lesson was that my personal identity has a big influence on who I am as a designer and artist. After reflection, I came to the conclusion that my personal identity can affect my artistic identity in two ways. For the first way on a more superficial level, my personal identity can be shown through my artistic identity in the choice of design style or aesthetics that I use in my works. As I am adventurous and a passionate person, I like to convey that through my designs by designing unconventional looking images, designing and creating out of the box. I also use a lot of bright and bold colours and images in my designs, highlighting my passionate personality through these works. On a deeper level of how my personal identity can affect my artistic identity, I believe that the values I hold as part of my identity play a big role in deciding what kind of designer I am, as it can affect my design philosophy and what kind of messages or themes I want to convey through my works. This is especially applicable to me now, as for my specialist module in image, we have to decide on a story that we want to convey through photography. This got me thinking a lot about what kind of stories I want to tell, and what kind of topics that I want to highlight through this project, as it will reflect on me as a designer and the kind of themes that I personally find important.

WEEK 01: Creative Practice and Critical Thinking
The main takeaway for this lesson I had was how creative practice and critical thinking are different, but can go hand in hand with each other a lot of the time. The activity of writing a short story to talk about a social issue guided me and allowed me to have a better understanding of what creative practice and critical thinking is, and also highlighted my strengths and writing style. Through this exercise, I saw that my story was leaning more towards it being critical, and upon reflection I was able to see how I could have made my story more creative too.
I also discussed with my classmate how critical thinking can be creative and how creativity can be critical, and we both agreed that creative practice and critical thinking often go together, especially in design. Critical thinking can be creativity through the way of displaying its information, such as by using infographics instead of having plain text. Creativity is oftentimes also critical, with many creative projects, design works and art installations often advocating for a certain topic. One such example is an exhibition in the UK, curated by Bee Illustrates and Eliza Hatch centring art as activism. The charity exhibition, entitled “Hysterical”, aims to subvert the “hysterical” label for women and marginalised genders with its various creative works from across creative disciplines. This exhibition is a good example of how creative practice can be critical, addressing the common theme of sexism and gender equality in their own art practice, bringing more awareness to these issues in the creative world.

WOII FINAL SUMMARY
Throughout this whole module, I have been able to interrelate individual artworks to broader themes in the world of design, and not just analyse it purely as a work of art on its own. Before WOII, whenever I came across a piece of design, I would just glance at it, judge it based on its appearance without thinking much about it. Now however, I try to connect it further into the world of design, and think about how it relates to the topics taught in WOII, such as Post- Structuralism, Phenomenology, and the Art Ecosystem as a whole. This makes the piece of design or art have more meaning, and I am also able to appreciate it more as well as have a deeper understanding of it.
Through writing the weekly reflections, I have also developed the skill of articulating my opinions in a concise manner, and have learnt to express my thoughts clearly. The habit of writing a weekly reflection has also again helped me in analysing and understanding works of design better, and by finding references every week for my reflections, I am also able to find more works and examples that I can analyse and broaden my knowledge upon.

WEEK 10: POST STRUCTURALISM
The key takeaway for me today is that Post-Structuralism posits that the “truth” is not a fixed concept, but changes based on an individual’s cultural, social and political position, allowing viewers to interpret and perceive ideas and concepts on their own.
The class activity of assigning different text to images helped to give me a clearer idea of what Post-Structuralism is, and was a good example in helping me to see Post-Structuralism in action, and I think it is an interesting concept in which the interpretations are decided based on an individual’s own perception.
I like how Post-Structuralism is very closely related to design, and how we can interpret design. Just like how there is not one fixed “truth” in the concept of Post-Structuralism, there is no one clear way of doing design or interpreting a piece of design. Everyone has their own way of thinking, coming up with a design process, and creating in general, and no one should have to be constricted to one way of doing things within the design world itself. I like how our modules in DCE use this concept, particularly for this semester’s craft workshop, where a lot of the projects are closely related to our own personal interpretation of things, such as poems, or memories, and we get to follow our own interpretations to come up with works that we like. Even for modules like photography, we were shown many types of studio photography, whether it be product photography or more conceptual shoots, no matter how different they may be, they all still fall under photography as a whole, showing that there is no one fixed way to do anything.

WEEK 09: CULTURAL MATERIALISM
The most notable idea from today’s lesson was how infrastructure is so important in our lives and it can be almost everything around us. Particularly the point on the internet as infrastructure was interesting, and allowed me to have a better sensing of how it can affect our understanding of design. There are both advantages and disadvantages to the internet as an infrastructure that we use as designers, with the main advantage being that it is very accessible, and gives almost everyone access to resources, artworks, exhibitions and many more things that may not be easily accessible in person. Especially during the Covid period, where museums had to close and in person access was not available, public interest in virtual art experiences skyrocketed, and virtual tours of exhibitions became popular. Design in the internet such as in User Interface and Digital Archives are also helpful in allowing people to have easy access to whatever information they need to get to. However, the experience of seeing design in person and online is still very different, and we should also take into consideration the different groups of people in which the internet may not bring much benefit to them.
During the class activity, we also talked more about infrastructure in our environment, where I brought up the example of how the Earl Lu Gallery is an example of adaptability within infrastructure, as the physical exterior space remains constant but its internal content changes. Infrastructure in our environment was interesting to me as it really shows where the interaction between culture and environment occurs.

WEEK 4+5: ANALYSING A WORK OF DESIGN
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The most notable idea from today’s session would be the Design Analysis Framework. I feel that it is a good way to structure my thoughts and opinions when looking at a piece of design or objects. Out of the five main components of the framework, I found the Context of the Piece to be the most interesting to me, as often times when I look at a piece of work at first glance, I would focus on the process or purpose first, or perhaps my attention would go to the use of medium in that work, and I would rarely think about the designer’s, or social and historical context of the work. Finding out more about the context of the piece would also help me to get a deeper understanding of the historical or social context of what was happening during the time the piece was created too. The activity of bringing our objects to class was interesting as we grouped it according to different categories like material, sentimental value etc, and it was helpful in helping us to see how the Design Analysis Framework is used on our own personal everyday items.
One of the exhibitions I found interesting was “Singapore, Very Old Tree” by Robert Zhao at Level 1. The exhibition was inspired by an old postcard found in the National Archives of Singapore, and showcases 17 images of trees around Singapore and highlights the unique stories of each, providing an alternative perspective of Singapore’s history and the personal connections that Singaporeans have with our local trees. I found it interesting as it focuses a lot on the context of the piece, providing historical context to our country’s history, and providing viewing context as well. I also found the setup of the exhibition interesting as well, as they had installed benches in front of the images, which reminded me of how there are benches in parks in front of trees as well, which made me question if the placement of the benches were intentional or not to deepen the experience of the exhibition itself.

WEEK 2: AESTHETICS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A point that I thought was interesting was in the speaker’s video in which he brought up the example of the story of Cinderella, and showed by how changing the aesthetics of each character, it could change the entire story, or our perception of the story as well. It shows how aesthetics is not just a concept of beauty, but also plays a role in changing viewers' perspective of things. An example of how form and function make up an aesthetic would be from today’s activity, where we analysed multiple signs from nearby eateries. A lot of the designs we documented were lacking in form, with lacklustre and “tacky” designs, this in turn affected the function, where passer-bys would not be able to tell what food the eateries are providing. In a local context, an example of when form may not necessarily affect function are hawker centres. Although they may not look very extraordinary or even clean at times, many people still patronise them based on how good, and cheap the food is.
A project which I think is a good example of an aesthetic that has both function and form in the branding sector is Juri Okita’s restaurant concept Wabi. She wanted to “show the beauty of perfection in food waste,” and “explored how restaurant branding could convey the idea of beauty in imperfect vegetables, to show the idea that sometimes it’s okay not to be perfect.” Her handcrafted typography as well as the shape of the menus resembles the shape of imperfect vegetables, and the overall identity of her brand conveys the message of showing the negative concept of imperfections in an optimistic way.

WEEK 1: PHENOMENOLOGY
Tumblr media
The main takeaway from today’s session for me is that Phenomenology is important in providing context to a piece of art or design work, and can also affect the way in which we design. Our own experiences can also affect the way we design something, as seen in the class activity, where I found that my interpretation of “time” differed from my classmates. While I chose to photograph my friend’s grown out dark roots from their coloured hair to show a physical representation of time, some of my classmates chose to photograph old trees and plants, showing the effects of time on nature. The reason why I chose to use grown out hair as my interpretation of time was partly because of my own experience having dyed hair myself, as such, it would be easier for me to think of this idea compared to some of my other classmates who have not bleached their hair before.
One example of Phenomenology in design would be Yuki Uebo’s illustrations. Her illustrations are all full of people and are visually dense. Her works are inspired by her love for crowds, and her experience of her culture in Japan. For like-minded individuals who share the same love of crowds or who come from a similar background, seeing Yuki Uebo’s illustrations might evoke a sense of similar excitement or love. However, for people who have had different experiences growing up in a slower- paced country, they might feel very differently. They may even feel a sense of claustrophobia or anxiousness when looking at her illustrations because of their lived experience, therefore having a different perspective than others.

Compulsory Qn 3
Tumblr media
One collaboration project that I would like to work on would be to create a school fashion magazine together with the Fashion Department. The magazine could feature students who have interesting or creative outfits, and we could interview them to ask where they got their inspiration from etc. This collaborative project would utilise Design Comm students’ design skills as well as Fashion students knowledge of design, and could overall be a fun monthly magazine that could be distributed throughout the school.
One final project I would like to do is to create a platform (app/website) to raise awareness for potential adoptee pets in Singapore or in SPCA. As someone who cares for animals a lot, I would like to use this opportunity to help these animals by utilising the skills I would have learnt over the 3 years. The platform could list pets that are available for adoption, and could include details such as their health status, age, breed etc so that potential owners could learn more about them before coming to a decision.
One organisation that I would like to contribute to is PinkDot. I would like to contribute to their design sector by helping out with the advertising, be it designing their promotional materials or their physical sets. I feel like their strong brand or image would be nice to work with, and I would like to see how I could help to build up on their image.
One job scope that I would like to branch out into is the UI/UX sector, where they are responsible for creating or designing the user interface for any interactive media. I think that CTS can help me in this sector as UI/UX designers have to go through a lot of trial and error until they get their desired outcome. Having a growth mindset can help me to embrace my failures and look for other ways to improve the interface despite running into problems.

Compulsory QN 2
When we have group work to do in Studio, working with other people gives me more ideas for the assignment that I myself would have not thought of, for example, when doing Research Framework or Visual Grammar, and it is always nice to learn from other’s point of view. We also have to communicate with each other and combine our ideas for a final end product. I also am able to assert and structure my thoughts in a way that allows me to communicate my ideas with my other group members to get my point across. Keeping a CPJ also allows me to document my work process as a designer.
For Craft, I make use of mindfulness to plan out my ideas and think before impulsively starting on my work, allowing me to have a clearer picture on what I am doing. Sometimes during Craft I have a bit too much fun chatting with friends instead of focusing on my work, However, using Self- Management I am able to have a better work-life balance which allows me to get my work done.
For Photography, although we have a photo-walk day, even if I manage to take the required amount of images for the assignment, having a growth mindset in mind, I try to go out on another day to rework on my images and to experiment more for the final submission. We also learnt in Photography that it is not advisable to take photos of another artists’ artwork or images that we come across and submit them as it may be considered as plagiarism.
For Digital Skills, since we are not familiar with certain softwares, it can be a bit difficult to navigate sometimes, however, at the end of the day we still learn a new skill, adding onto my growth mindset and skill set. I also keep a folder and record of all the exercises we did in class so that I can revisit them whenever I need to.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To me, the Critical Thinking Skills module is all about learning reflective processes that can help me in not only my journey as a designer but also in my everyday life. It can consist of many different components, and can be divided into many topics such as the ones we learn weekly, but overall I believe that this module is designed to help me and my classmates have a clear mental strategery that can aid us in our work as designers.
For our group visual metaphor, we chose an ecosystem to be our visual metaphor, as we feel that similar to how an ecosystem cannot operate without one of its components, all the different components of Critical Thinking Skills are linked together as well to form the overall idea of Critical Thinking. An alternative visual metaphor for me would be a human body, where different parts of the body represent different components of Critical Thinking. All body parts are essential and important for a human being to function properly, just like how all these components make Critical Thinking a whole process.
The spine represents “What is CTA?”, as it is the foundation and ‘backbone’ of the whole module. The heart represents Emotional Intelligence, and the brain represents Growth Mindset. The eyes show the Documentation of Art Practice, while the hands and feet show Conflict Resolution and Collaborative Skills respectively.
My favourite activity was the Week 09’s Documenting Creative Processes as I felt that this helped me to gain a better insight into how CPJ’s work, and I was able to see various examples as well. It was especially useful in helping me to visualise and gain ideas for my CPJ for Studio, and was informative in a practical sense where I was able to apply what I learnt from CTS to Studio.

W05: Growth Mindset
Tumblr media
One of my main takeaways from today’s lesson is about how I can adapt a growth mindset as a designer and a student. I am someone who needs reassurance when it comes to my work, and whose emotions can get easily swayed by what other people say or think. Thus, I have always preferred to work within my comfort zone instead of challenging myself to think harder. However, something that stood out to me during the keynote speech was when the speaker mentioned not to see failure as the end, but rather we should think that we are “not there yet”. This shifted my perspective on things, and in fact failure can be seen as just experimenting, instead of the end. For example, in my digital skills module, there are many things that are unfamiliar and new to me. Last week I learnt about rotoscoping, something that I had no previous knowledge of before. Initially, I struggled with the technical aspects and was falling behind a bit. However, after consulting with my lecturer, I was able to complete the work, and surprisingly found myself enjoying the process. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I started my own rotoscoping projects on my own. From this I learnt a new area of design that I am interested in, and would like to research more into this area.

W03: Emotional Intelligence
Tumblr media
An aspect that I think I am the strongest at is Empathy. For example, since our class has quite a number of international students, not all of us have the same level of understanding of English. Therefore, sometimes when instructions or briefs are given regarding a certain group activity, some of the international students may be confused as to what to do. Instead of feeling frustrated or impatient, I try to put myself in their shoes, and take my time to slowly explain to them what we should do so that everyone can be on the same page and they won't feel left behind. Not only does this make them feel included, they can also give their valuable input so that our project can be more rich with ideas.
An aspect that I think I can improve on is Self-Management. I feel that I am someone who gets very easily swayed by my emotions. Whenever something bad or inconvenient happens in either my personal life or in my learning, it affects my capability to focus on my work, and can result in myself having lower motivation and productivity. I feel that I should work on separating my personal life from my work to maintain a good balance, and I should try to control my negative feelings and behaviours in a healthier way so that it won't affect my work.

W02: Collaborative Skills
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I feel that some of my strengths as a collaborator would be that I have many creative ideas that I can offer and bring to the table. I like to think outside of the box, and that leads to me coming up with many different ideas. I also feel that I am quite open-minded, and love to hear my teammates suggestions and ideas. Research shows that being open-minded can help me to gain more knowledge, make connections, reduce conflict with others and facilitate collaboration. However, my weakness would be that I tend to give in to other people’s suggestions instead of offering my own. I feel that I can speak up more during the ideation as well as creative process to help contribute a different perspective, which may lead to new ideas or solutions.
A project that I feel demonstrates collaborative skills quite well is the John Smedley and Intoart’s London Craft Week collection, where various artists used hand-crafted knitwear as a canvas. 3 artists, Christian Ovonlen, Lisa Contucci and Mawuena Kattah came together to create handmade designs on a knitted jumper made by John Smedley. This project not only is a collaboration between different craft industries, but between artists with different art styles, as all 3 artists specialise in different types and mediums in art. Overall, I feel that this is an inter project that combines fashion and art, showing that the two are not always mutually exclusive.
