Final Evaluation Part 2
For my final pieces I included lots of skills and techniques, my main technique would be patchwork. This I feel was the centre piece of my upholstered chair. My patchwork was very successful and looks very professional as it’s very precise abs the colour palette I went with is very calming and perfect for an interior. I made my own pattern and measured out the size that the fabrics needed to be. All of my stitching lined up perfectly, this is down to the pinning of my fabrics starting from the centre and working my way out. My final pieces also included my digital print which was made from a mirrored print using photoshop. I practised this skill before using microscope drawings, however for my digital print I drew out starfish and jellyfish from microscopic imagery on illustrator. I then coloured and layered these up to then get my print. The colour palette I chose for my print is very classy and calming, I find this ideal in a home. I started a new skill of upholstery, I have never tried this before, so this could’ve went completely wrong. However both of my outcomes look professionally made, so I am willing to try this skill again. But next time I would push this even further by challenging myself with something new or something more difficult. My final pieces also link to sustainability. I was able to get recycled fabrics for what I included in my patchwork, and for my digital print I chose organic cotton as it’s a lot more eco-friendly than normal cotton. For the chair that I upholstered it was not in use, was old, and would’ve been thrown away. So I was lucky to be able to up-cycle this as it’s more environmentally friendly. Paint is very bad for the environment, so I made sure I was very specific with my paint choice which is why I chose eco-friendly, this was the best choice for me as it doesn’t harm our planet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My final outcomes I feel would sell very well in places like Dunelm or Next Home, this is because both of these homeware stores sell a variety of interior products and they vary in all the different styles. I have seen Next and Dunlem sell patchwork chairs before, mine is different to any others that I have seen. This is why I think it would be perfect for that market as it would be new to customers and it has a very chic style. I find that the colours I have chose also fit in really well with the aesthetic of both of these brands. Not only could I see my work in these brands, I could see my work published in an interior magazine or on display in a shop window. For the photo shoot I chose for my interiors I shot some at an office desk as well as a plain white background as staple pieces. I do find it harder and more challenging to get creative with photos for interiors, yet I feel my photos are still very strong.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If I was to improve or change something within my work I would research more into creative photo shoots for interior products. I would then develop my photo shoots by either changing backgrounds and the settings, or getting different colour lighting. I find it hard to be able to get different interior photos so I feel me researching this would help develop my knowledge. I did face challenges throughout the making of the chair cover this was trying to measure out the chair and working out how large to cut out my fabrics. As my chair is rectangle shaped it’s harder to sew something that isn’t square and to get it even. But I managed to overcome this by just have excess fabric and cutting it down to size afterwards. If I had more time I could add a cushion to my collection, which would again use parts from my digital print. This would also be a patchwork piece, however I didn’t have enough time and I wasn’t sure if this would be too much.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This project overall I feel really helped me develop my skills by looking deeper into the theme that I’m doing, than rushing straight into it. I know that I have learnt new skills which I will use in future projects such as digital prints, shibori, natural dying, and patchwork. It has also opened up my mind on how I could make my work sustainable and how much sustainability actually means to people. I had previously made a time table which I tried to stick to however I found out I ended up completing more work at home than at college. This is because most of the tools I had I struggled to take to college. In the last week I was being pushed for time as I left a lot of my final pieces to the last minute as I had to gather materials. Overall my final pieces was very successful I’m very happy with how they turned out. I feel confident and I would definitely try upholstery again.

Final Evaluation Part 1
Throughout this project of regeneration I learnt new skills and some I found better than others. I learnt more deeply into photoshop which is where I created mirrored prints, I really enjoyed doing this as I could make it my own by changing the start image, the colours, or the way I rotate my image. For my digital print I also ended up making my digital print from a mirrored print. This is because I got the coronavirus whilst trying to make my digital print. But illustrator wasn’t working from my house. So I overcame this by changing my design. I also tried the technique shibori, this was the process of making a 3D like fabric from steaming it. My best shibori would be where I out marbles and buttons in the fabric and steamed it. I wish I developed this by adding dye to some of my samples. I found this technique very interesting as I’ve never seen anything like that before. I also developed my skills from patchwork by creating hand sewn samples. This was the hexagon technique, I did also enjoy this and how it turned out however I found it took too long to do. I tried experimenting with grown textiles this meant getting certain materials and watering it consistently with seeds on it. This really took me by surprise as this was the experimenation that I was least expecting to work. Even though I didn’t really like how it looked I was shocked as to how well this came out. natural dyeing was also a technique that was new to me, I have only dyed fabric with tea, so when I made a chart of all the different samples I was surprised by all the colours you could make from things that you could easily find in the supermarket. My best skill would definitely be the mirrored prints and I know I would use this again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have learnt a lot about sustainability I’ve leant how fashion brands are trying to help and make a good impact. Slow fashion is a very good part to the fashion industry, even though it is a lot smaller than fast fashion and is down in little non-chain stores. Slow fashion is made from sustainable textiles, it is more expensive but its better quality and it will last longer. Sustainable textiles is now growing and becoming more popular as it’s eco-friendly and it is good for the environment and a lot less damaging. But I have also seen why sustainability is so important and why things like fast fashion is so bad. Fast fashion is bad because it consists of potential chemicals, people get really badly underpaid to make these clothes, and is overall really bad for the environment. That’s why sustainable textiles is becoming more and more popular.
Tumblr media
I was inspired by lots of research and artists throughout this project. My best ones would be @theartofpathology on Instagram, this is because I really was inspired by the way he would look into cells through a microscope, as well as adjusting the colours so it’s less obvious. My digital print was inspired by this artist as I was drawn to all of the outlines and the aesthetic of the Instagram page. I was very influenced by my research into jellyfish and starfish as this is what started my ideas for my digital print not only that it’s one of my biggest links to my theme of regeneration as both of these creatures regenerate some of their limbs. I searched deeper into these and went down the route of microscope cells, this is because it’s less obvious and means that the audience would need to look harder into my work to work out what it is. The brand Emilio Pucci also inspired me, even though my work may not look anything like theirs I was inspired by their complimentary colour palettes that they tend to use. As well as the designs that they make for fashion. From being inspired by this brand I knew I would prefer having a complimentary colour palette for my final pieces.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For my final piece I focused on interior pieces. I have always been drawn to interiors from a young age and I want to experiment with all the different things I could create. For this project I upholstered a lampshade as well as a chair. I have never upholstered before, so I wanted to give it a try which did turn out to be very successful. I did also include a part of textiles to. This what from me designing my own fabric, again this is something I haven’t done before. I definitely want to develop this skill and see what other things I could make.

Time Table
Tumblr media
I created a time table to try and help my time time management, this meant writing down what I would be doing on that day. This time table would’ve worked well however one day I came down ill so I couldn’t complete that days work. This then pushed me back by a couple of hours.
Therefore my timetable did not match up with how long this took me. In the last two days I was all caught up however I didn’t realise how long it would take me to update my blog. In the end I was able to catch up but towards the end it was a lot more stressful than planned. Next time I should start gathering materials before this as well as my sketchbook and portfolio. This would mean I would have more time to write on my blog, make my final piece and write my final evaluation.

Process of Upholstering my Chair
Tumblr media
To start making my chair I started by getting the chair. This chair was an old un-used chair that was sat in a container. So I wanted to get this to link to my theme of sustainability by up cycling something that isn’t in use. I started by sanding down the chair to get off all the old wax and varnish etc. I already had a sander at home which I was able to use. Once I finished sanding I brushed off all the dust then went into painting my chair. I filmed a little clip of me doing this so you can see how time consuming it is. For the chair I painted layers as the wood was quite dark and needed lots of coats. I was lucky with the paint I chose not only it was eco-friendly it was also very quick to dry. I also had to pop off the part that you sit on the chair so I could then staple in my fabric another time. This was a struggle as the wood is very old and fragile I didn’t want to snap the wood.
Once I had finished painting the chair and it was dried I was very pleased with the colour I chose as I compared my lampshade next to it and they fit perfectly together.
To make the cover I based my work off the poll I made on instagram and the one that got the most votes was the design that I was going to choose as the cover. It took me quite a long time to choose the recycled fabrics as trying to match colours, and if I wanted other patterns or not. Finally I came to the decision and I really like these as I’ve got different tones, patterns and even a floral fabric. I had to work out how big I was going to make the cover by measuring the chair and working out how big I was going to cut things out. Before cutting out I had to iron my fabrics perfectly otherwise the final outcome may not me flat and straight.
Once my fabrics were cut out I started by sewing the squares together. When ironing these open, you need to seal the stitches. To do this you iron the piece un-opened, then open it up but face the two seams on the same side facing the darkest fabric. I sewed all the squares together in rows. After this I moved onto making triangles which I haven’t done in a long time so I made a practise piece which I’m glad I did otherwise I would’ve cut out my fabric too small.
Once I finished the whole square it looked very professional, I was very pleased with how this turned out, as it was precise patchwork which takes a lot longer and a lot harder to pin and get exact. But all of my points they were all pretty much spot on.
I then managed to get iron on wadding to stop any fabric waring, as I have used liberty, oakshot and cotton. After this I cut out my foam by tracing out the top of the chair, I then placed my fabric on top of the foam and stuck pins through the fabric into the foam to stop the fabric from moving. I then got my stable gun and stapled it down, I found the corners the hardest part to do as it was really fiddly.
My only problem with the chair is it isn’t yet attached properly as I could get a hold of L-shaped hooks to screw it on the chair. But other than that it links to my theme of regeneration from the use of my digital print fabric. I know that I would be happy to do this again from how it turned out.

Building up to upholstering my chair
I had to gather materials for me to be able to upholster my chair such as paint, fabrics, and a chair. I was very lucky to be able to get a chair, the chair that I will be upholstering is old, out of use, and would be thrown away. So I was able to take this chair which I could then turn into a creative chair with some life in it. This is also good for my theme of sustainability as I’m up cycling an old chair.
I found the paint the hardest part of this as I know paint is really bad for the environment, so I took my time with finding the right colour and make of paint. I then came across the make Farrow & Ball, this paint is eco-friendly, and even though it is more expensive I was happy to know that this fits in even better with my theme. I found trying to find a colour really hard to as I knew I wanted it to link to the colours that are in my digital print fabric. I also found that some of the colours on the chart they did not have. In the end I ended up going with the colour pigeon as I have very similar colours to this in my print. I find this colour is also very calming which I think is perfect for an interior.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With my fabrics I was going to natural dye my fabric however I realised I did not make enough, so instead I used left over fabrics that I had and I reused this. This links to my theme of sustainability I also managed to get really good fabrics to match with my digital print fabric, this was one of my biggest worries.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was also very worried about what cover design I was using, so I made a poll on my Instagram which people could vote their favourite one. My first one I made previously in my own time but the others I practiced for this topic. It turns out I got most votes on the first one which I was happy with as I could alter the design however I wanted depending on the colour of fabric I chose.

Process of Making Lampshade
I wanted to make a lampshade from my digital print fabric as I have never upholstered furniture before and I wanted to give this a go. I researched this by looking at YouTube videos and google websites by watching the process. To do this you need to have your lampshade, spray glue, hot glue, scissors and a ruler.
The process I used was to place my lampshade onto pattern cutting paper and draw out the size of my lampshade from the seam back to the seam. I started from the bottom then I moved onto the top. I joined up the end lines using a ruler and to the bottom and top lines I added 1/2 inch to be able to fold this into the lampshade. I then also added 1 inch to one of the ends to create a hem. I made sure before drawing and cutting out that my fabric was ironed perfectly so the lines came out as straight as possible. Once I cut it out I double checked that the fabric was larger than the lampshade.
The next steps was to spray glue the fabric and then create a hem from this. However my fabric was really thick so the spray glue was not holding it together. Therefore I ironed the hem down and put the hem together using a hot glue gun. Once the hem was made I rolled it around the lamp starting with the non-hemmed side. This did take a few attempts to get it even. After this I then spray glued down the edges to fold over the lamp. But I found after a few hours parts lifted off, so again I went back in with the spray glue. The only reason why I didn’t sew it down was because of the metal in the lampshade, and on top of that I didn’t want to break the lampshade frame.
Now this is finished I’m thrilled with how it turned out. This looks professional, more importantly my digital print fits in perfectly as an interior. The colour palette I chose is very elegant and classy, and I would be more than happy to buy this from a homeware shop. The only way I could improve this is hem the folded over edges so you can’t see it fraying. But it is hardly noticeable, I have a lot more good points than bad about this lamp.
From making this I know that I would happily make another lampshade again as I am not disappointed with the outcome. My lampshade links to my theme of regeneration as in the digital print fabric that I designed it includes cell microscope drawings from starfish and jellyfish. Both of these animals regenerate a body part of theirs. What I am really happy about with my digital print is its really hard to tell what it is. I like it not being obvious and less noticeable.

Final Design Board
I create a design board as to what I will be making for my final pieces, this meant including colours patterns, and drawings of what I will be making. I am going to upholster a chair and a lamp using my digital print fabric. I’ve linked what techniques I will be using from my brainstorm such as patchwork. I have included fabric samples from natural dyed processes, I used tea, coffee, and jam. I put in an image of the patchwork technique that I want to put on the top of the chair. This is more precise patchwork, and I’ve got to be very careful when pinning and sewing.
I made a tracing of an interior instead as I thought it would be easier to show my design behind the elements that I will be using in my final piece. This worked well as I can see this from a better perspective. I also included different points as to what I will be doing to the two different objects. I feel this has helped me and made me feel more confident with what I’m making.

Patchwork Chairs
I searched into patchwork chairs to see what previous patchwork chairs have been made as I don’t want to make something that’s already been made before. I went onto many different websites as well as google imagery and I could only find plain squares or rectangles stitched together. This isn’t what I was going to be doing, I planned on making more traditional and precise patchwork with perfect points.
On top of that I really struggled to find wooden chairs that had been upholstered, but when I did it was still plain square patchwork.
Therefore I am so pleased that I’m doing my own patchwork as I haven’t seen anything like it on google. My patchwork will also relate to my theme of regeneration as I will be using my digital print fabric, this consists of cells from jellyfish and starfish.

Rough Designs
I created 10 rough designs in total so I did 5 lampshades and 5 chairs as I knew I wanted to upholster these in my final piece. I did this so it could open up my ideas and I could compare which I think is best/worst. I could also compare techniques that I’ve considered using.
My best lampshade would be the 4th design with the interesting base and straight shade with my digital print. This was the best design as my fabric would look perfect as a lampshade cover. The weave would probably be my last option as I haven’t weaved before and I don’t know how this would turn out.
For the chairs my best outcome would be the wooden chair with patchwork as the digital print on its own is too simple. On top of this I have never upholstered anything before and I feel going straight into an armchair would be too hard especially in 2 weeks.

Lampshade Upholstery
I researched into lampshade upholstery as this is something that I will be upholstering towards my final piece. As I have never done this before I researched into YouTube videos on how to do this. I thought this was going to be a lot more challenging than it actually is.
From watching this I know what I need to get such as spray glue adhesive, rotary cutter, and a lampshade. To do this I need to cut out my fabric slightly larger than the lampshade, and then I simply spray glue the fabric and attach it to the frame. I thought this was going to be a lot harder as I thought it involved sewing and I was unsure if it was using a specific machine or sewing foot.

Wooden Chair Upholstery
I researched into chair upholstery and watched a YouTube video on this, as I felt this would show me in a better way on how to do this. From looking at the video I know what items I need to get for the chair upholstery like foam, sander, and my fabric. I also now know what techniques I need to do to make it look professional.
The video was better for me to watch than step by step pictures as I can see it from a better view. As well as seeing what seems to be the harder/easier steps. In the future I will go to YouTube videos more often.

Interior Tracings
I used a light box to trace out office interiors, I did this so I could get an idea of what my digital print would look like as part of the interiors. I used digital repeats that I wasn’t even going to choose as my final digital print just to compare colours. I began by ripping bits of paper to fit different sections, but I ended up just putting the paper over the drawing and the colour showed up better. I do feel that blue was the best colour that I chose, I felt that blue fits better in certain interiors. Blue is meant to be a calming colour, which means it’s very good for office/study interiors.
Overall I do feel I chose the right pattern and colours, this is because it isn’t too bold, too plain, it fits in well. It also links to my theme as it’s made up of starfish and jellyfish microscope cells. I am happy with my digital print that I chose, it will fit in really well with my ideas.
