23 years later, I have to reflect that I am very grateful that Amy and myself are both still here to tell the tale. Still, this anniversary isn't a happy one, and this club is a tough one to be in. If you lived through it, chances are you experienced some things you didn't want to experience, and with any luck have not experienced before or after - I usually try to think of some further aspect of that day's events that I haven't written about in previous subsequent posts - watching the planes crash into the towers, and the sinking feeling that two is not pilot error, ten dollar water bottles for the soot covered survivors that made it as far as China Town, taking the train in the days to follow before they allowed car traffic again, past the train station parking lots full of all the cars of the people who never came home, the giant smoking hole we all looked at in silence before going into the tunnel under water - going downtown days later and realizing the clouds of fine particles of flotsam and jetsam was actually comprised in large part of human remains, and other things you shouldn't be breathing - weeks later, there was a balcony at my old office in midtown we used to go out on - and one day the wind changed direction, and I will never forget the smell of all those dead bodies blowing uptown - or the father where we lived that couldn't cope and one day went to the train station and waited on the tracks for the train with his two kids - I could go on. But instead this year, I am just thinking about whether or not we have learned anything - There is a group called the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, they maintain a thing called the Doomsday Clock, and have done so since 1947. It is a measure, from people who presumably should know, how close we are to blowing up planet earth and all life along with it - The Bulletin has reset the minute hand on the Doomsday Clock 25 times since its debut, the best it has ever gotten was 17 minutes away from nuclear holocaust in 1991 - most recently in 2023 they moved it from 100 seconds to midnight to 90 seconds to midnight, where it remains today - I mention this to say, some folks who should know think that we're in real danger. I am once again taking a run at the proverbial windmill armed only with my tired and tattered words that I hope will prove mightier than the sword - We are all brothers and sisters, we are all G-d's children, we cannot let race, religion or any other measure divide us, we all need each other, and these days there's not much funny about Peace, Love and Understanding. I have been blessed with Amy to have been able to travel - sometimes places I never thought I'd get to go - Russia, Cuba, Czech Republic, Hiroshima - And in all those places people didn't want to kill us any more than we did them, they mostly wanted to see their kids win their ball games, have a cookout on the weekend with family, and leave the world a little better than when they found it - much the same as I believe, you and I - So asking nicely - Please be kind and thoughtful with one another, try to rise above circumstance, maybe even find it in your heart to put someone else's needs before your own, and try your best to be a warrior for peace -
