Thinking on the color of the Lucii being black. Of course, this makes sense as a dev design choice. It looks cool. It looks a little hot topic. It’s a color of death. Of mourning.
But-
Did Somnus choose it? After killing his brother? Was he guilty? Or was it just to maintain his image? Or was it a facetious jab at Ardyn?
Why maintain it for 2,000 years? Holding onto the loss that no one remembers, scrubbed from history.
Was it just one more tradition? Don’t question the crystal, don’t question the gods, don’t question scrubbing the faces of the previous kings and queens from history and leaving only inhuman protectors in their wake, don’t question why Somnus chose black as the royal color
Or did Somnus choose it to contrast his brother as a statement? He didn’t agree with how to handle the scourge, he saw his brother as a traitor, he saw his brother as a roadblock to a throne rightfully his own. He condemned the people with scourge. He condemned his brother. In a game with overt light and darkness symbolism, Somnus was cloaked in darkness before he ever ascended the throne. It was Ardyn who wore white.
Either way, it was likely a vestige of Somnus and Ardyn. Either way, even though Somnus did his level best to erase Ardyn from history, their conflict left its mark in the darkness cloaking the Lucis Caelum line from Somnus down to Noctis

Hey, hey prev, how very dare you
In all seriousness, I’ve known about the skulls for ages- it never crossed my mind however to think about what they mean as actual symbols though (likely due to learning about it ages before really coming back and actually analyzing the shit out of this poor game)
I was initially hesitant to agree to the idea of it being a death cult, but even if they aren’t.. outright fanatics or worshippers, there’s an ingrained normalization in royal circles. Noctis is the chosen one and he is going to die and that is seen as unavoidable. Even by Ignis who was, we saw, entirely willing to gamble his life in exchange for Noctis’s. Regis was, effectively, made terminally ill by the ring. He had health complications. He was going to die rather young. And Ignis, Noctis’s oldest friend, doesn’t see how upsetting it is to Noctis and talks about it like it’s perfectly normal until Noct snaps and actually fucking yells at him. The kings of Lucis are not remembered as people, but as weapon bearing and armor clad larger than life figures. The god of the crystal is Bahamut, the god of war. The bladekeeper. How much closer to death can you get? Shiva is perhaps the next closest god to the royalty of Lucis, if we assume that Gentiana has been close to the oracle at least since the jump. But we can do better than assume.
Tumblr media
(This appears briefly in one of Noctis’s childhood flashbacks with Luna as she holds the cosmogony book open for them to read)
Shiva’s cold is regularly called ‘the chill wind of death’ and while this is possibly tied to her actual powers, I wouldn’t be surprised if she’d ended up tied to death in Lucian culture.
On top of all this, black is a strange color of royalty. It’s not a color of courage or fortitude or wealth. It’s a color of mourning.
So yeah. I was hesitant at first, but thinking about it, that’s a death cult.
Just realized how many of the landmarks of ffxv are tombs, in one way or another. The meteor and the disc, Ravatogh, Shiva’s corpse, insomnia and Altissia, Tenebrae and Gralea, Angelguard and Taeplar Crag.
Half the hexatheon had places where their body lay in slumber and/or effective death (much as a god can die). Every capital is all but razed. Noctis and Ardyn both served a tenure of quasi-death on an island prison where they were the sole life form.
Eos itself is consumed by death for ten arduous years, a coffin for the people under its miasma choked sky.
The world itself is changed by death and its memory, just as much as the characters who inhabit it.

Kermit for pope
Tumblr media
I was trying to find out if Kermit was eligible to be pope and I found a blog that says he's the perfect example of a catholic priest

I hope whoever wrote the line "Look at you taking charge. I like it." got a massive raise for that stroke of genius.

Just a thought for yall- of all the bros, Noctis is the only one that we know of to have canonically been outside Insomnia before the road trip at night (at a point in his life when he can remember it)
Noctis is the only one who’s seen the stars unobstructed, away from the glare of city lights bouncing off the wavering magic of the wall.
The first time the bros camp, it’s likely literally their first time ever getting a good look at the night sky outside of photos or videos.

Cannot believe more people aren't talking about Chadley and MAI. Local robot has spent his entire life shackled to the whims of a truly despicable man and finally breaks free and creates his own freewill and you know the first thing he does? Make another person. And she's bright and she's full of curiosity and she loves the world and she critically. Critically. Does things because she wants to. Chadley is the seventh iteration and the only one who got out. His creator can put him in pain at any time by torturing one of his precursors. He is not free. But the first thing he did upon leaving home was bring to life someone who was.

A rather unrelated addition, but the thesis of 'he still dies. she still dies. that's how the story goes.' brings me back to my thoughts on Trigun Stampede of all things. Namely that Trigun, as a piece of media that's being adapted for a second time, will still kill off Wolfwood and Stampede will still be just as brutal about it. It needs to happen. It needs to crack something in Vash. Wolfwood still has to die. that's how the story goes. it's foundational.
I also think as an audience, that both of these stories lose- not just their plot, but also their bite. You love a character and you watch them die. You love a character and their media is remade and you know you have to watch them die again and it doesn't stop you loving them. It's a specific feeling. It's broken by keeping them alive. I don't know, it's art. It's story telling. You love it, even when you know how it ends. You can't help it.
I think it was… Penny Parker of Snapcube who I first saw pointing out the comparison between Rebirth’s ending and the fix-it fics and game mods that save Aerith from being killed in the temple. For the game mods in particular because Aerith doesn’t exist on the other discs she has to stay behind. Even if you pretend she lives it leaves a necessary hole in the narrative: she has to go pray, or something has to happen so that the story can keep moving. It breaks apart if she’s still in the picture.
He still dies. She still dies. That’s how the story goes.
And it makes me INSAAAAAAAAAAANE

listen i am obsessed with this single line of dialogue. it's a Final Fantasy game full of people named crazy shit like GENESIS RHAPSODOS and WEISS THE IMMACULATE and then there's this dude. some random ass guy from the in-game lore equivalent of rural Louisiana whose name may as well be Jim.
And Jim Has Seen It All. he fell 300 meters and crashed through the roof of a church and he walked it off like it was nothing. he's seen his mentor grow one single wing and take to the skies majestically like an albatross. he survived when an alien brain fungus consumed his coworker's consciousness spurring the guy to commit arson and a small genocide. fresh outta high school he's abducted by scientists and trapped in a large petri dish for four years. he escapes and then singlehandedly mows down an entire goddamn army of hundreds of troopers and gets shot like at least twenty times. he tears a metal tree out of the ground and chucks it at a helicopter like a toy shovel, acting cool about it. "ugh mondays am i right? haha"
the rapture is coming. the sky has ripped open like a wrestler's t-shirt and everyone is mourning their impending doom and Jim is just like "it'll be fine lol" but then SEPHIROTH arrives and shoves him into a wormhole. he wanders the empty backstage of reality, and only then does he start to slightly freak out just a tiny bit. no problem. hop in hop out, quick boss battle against the brain fungus coworker, easy peasy. he gets savewarped to another universe, kinda annoying but he can deal, he thinks.
But now there's a fucking meteor crashing down on top of him. And finally, finally— Jim cracks. He can't handle this. What the actual fuck is my life, he finally wonders. "What the hell is going on!?" he finally asks.
