PHOTO TIPS FOR PORTRAITS
It's important to find an appropriate location in which to photograph a subject. Remember the ideas you wish to convey, the personality, his or her interests or occupation. Use a simple background or push a cluttered background out of focus if necessary.

Photo Assignment
Try rendering a single subject (something smallish and portable and interesting!) in a number of environments or situations. Do a series of three or four photographs using the elements and principles of design to communicate your ideas. Try changing the lighting, the depth of field, and your shooting position, too. Modify the feel of the photos as dramatically as you can! I've used a doll for this project, a shoe, and a sharp tool.

CRITIQUING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY
Should you have been closer? Higher, or lower?
Does the photo seem well-balanced?
Does the subject fill the space appropriately, or is there too much space?
Is there adequate shadow detail? Are there plentiful middle tones?
How does the light affect the mood of the picture?
How does your use of focus (or lack thereof) affect the way you look at the photo?
If it's in color, does the color add to your idea or detract from it?

Manipulated on a hard copy of a #photograph. Metallic silver marker outlines on all (or most) of the shapes. Easy, fun, and striking!

photo ideas for you
A motley variety of objects might make great photos! An old shoe, a broken toy, a well-used instrument, a large feather or seashell. How about a kitchen utensil, a dried flower, a smooth stone, or a hunk of interesting metal? Place any of these (alone or in a group) in the right setting and you might have a great photograph!
