Week 11
During week 11, I was not able to present due to a family problem but while seeing others presentations I was able to use the advice given to others. There were some changes I wanted to make for my photo series because I felt that just having escalators was going to be a bit boring and after being in many stations, I couldn't find many escalators that looked great in my opinion (definitely an idea I have with escalators I might see in other places). I have decided to make my photo series about a persons journey underground. I hope my photo series gives people a different perspective of going through the station to your next destination.

Behind Shades and Lipstick Lies the Hidden Truths
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the first photo, I have decided to put sunglasses and lipstick on the model so I can show the contrast in the black-and-white photo and to show a message. Even though we spent much of our time trying to look our best to hide what we feel within, it does not truly hide the emotions we feel day to day. These attributes will make a person look happier and more confident but in reality, a person’s appearance does not tell us the truth but rather what they want people to believe. We all have our struggles and they are all valid to feel but objects and makeup will not solve the root of our problems. In the second photo, I cropped it too only highlight her eyes. In this photo, we can see how the whole mood changes since we can see the sadness and seriousness in her eyes. Apart from showing the deep meaning of the photos, I have chosen these sunglasses in the photo to work with shapes and lines and the definition they give a photo. The colour of the bright lipstick also helps the photograph look more amusing since we can see the contrast of the lipstick with the rest of the photo.

Nadine IJEWERE - Untitled, 2018
1. This photo interests me because of the bright colors. When thinking about a picture with these colors in it, It doesn’t not seem to make sense in my head but this picture looks very satisfying. The color of the flowers are so bright and the green print suit looks very nice.
2. I believe the angle this picture was taking in is why it looks perfect. The use of light is also very important in this image and makes it feel happy and bright.
3. The fact that the photograph is so bright, makes me believe it is a happy photo, even though the colors on the suit are dark and can also be seen in another photograph with a different vibe.
4. The style is something I have not seen before because the outfit of the model does not really go with the background, but the picture still looks very nice.
Tumblr media
Dana SCRUGGS - Fire on the beach,2019
1. I am interested in this photo because of the scale it is taken in and the colors of the sky and the dress and everything looks very nice together.
2. I believe every compositional aspect should be appreciated in this photograph. All the colors in the photograph look very nice together, and the bright red from the dress pops out very much. This is a type of photo that I would love to take of myself. The flow of the dress also makes the photo even better.
3. The color of the dress pops in all the kore neutral colors in the back. The color of the models skin really makes the photograph more beautiful.
4. I have seen photos that sube loom a bit similar to these on instagram but not this professional or cool.
Tumblr media
Bafic - Baker in the Green Grass, 2019
1. This photo is of a chef laying on grass. I know that because of the title of the photograph this photograph interest me because when I’m in a park I also like the man is doing.
2. I think the shapes and lines of this photo make it look nicer. The baker seems to be relaxing and enjoying the sun. When I sit at the park, I also like to lay like this.
3. I see the object in the photo that he seems tired and trying to take a break from working I would assume. He is connecting with nature.
4. This style of photograph does remind me of photos I would see on tumblr in 2010.

Adrienne Raquel- Mirror,Mirror, New York, 2017
I like this photograph, because it looks pretty and simple. I like the color of the walls, and the white in her nail, the mirror, and the wall below. A compositional aspect I noticed is the shapes and lines as we see in the photo. We can see the circle in the mirror and the sharp corner of the edge of the wall. I think it’s a very aesthetically pleasing photo. This photo does remind me of things I’ve seen before on social media.
Tumblr media
Ruth OSSAI- Fish or fight, London,2017
This photograph interest me because of all the caps the model is wearing, and also all the logos on his outfit. The photograph is of a man wearing many caps, forwards and backwards with an outfit full of logos. I like the shape of the way the man is sitting and the small object of a water gun in his hand. There is overall a lot going on in this photo so it’s good to take your time and look at all the different aspects. This photo does not remind me of anything else I have seen before

For this short series, The Londoners, I have chosen to take photographs of the way people go from place to place. Some people walk and a lot of others take some sort of public transportation. Since I moved to London, I noticed how the city is always moving and people are always trying to get from place to place as quick as possible. Nobody likes to waste time here, which is very admirable, considering I don’t like to waste time either. It was interesting doing this assignment since I looked at the city of London with a different perspective. I was able to capture what I think mostly about London, which is the transportation.

I have chosen this photo, because it is interesting to see everyone lined up a bakery during a flour shortage. The lighting as seen in the picture before of the young boy, shows the composition of the photo as we see everyone standing in line, but we are still able to see everyone’s expressions on their faces. I believe the title, stating that there is a flour shortage shows peoples urgency to get in the store. This photo does not need to be seen in a series to be understood and the title does help a lot. The style of this photo does remind me of other photos. I have seen the past weeks.
Tumblr media
This photo shows children playing with chalk on the street on what looks like a gloomy day. We can see the contrast between the color of the chalk and the color of the brick of the buildings. We can also see that the sky is gloomy, so we are not sure if it is sunny outside or not. I believe the exhibition text does help to convey the message of the story, and if the photo were seen in a series, it would make more sense. The title does not help with this photograph, and the style of the photograph, like the others, does remind me of other things I have seen.

While visiting Chris Killip at The Photographers Gallery, I chose this series of photos titled, Seacoal, which are photos of people and horses while coal was being washed into sea and seeing what people did. The series show people working with the coal, views, and horses laying on the beach in a camp. The message being them is to show winter tides returned waste coal that was in the sea from a nearby mine. I know this because of the description that was given with the series. These photos convey the message because you can see the people from the camp working and the photos show the real life they live.
Tumblr media
I chose this photo because i was curious of what the boy is crying or suffering about. The photo is in black and white and the contrast of his clothing compared to his skin and the lighting make the photo more emotional. There is not info given with this specific photo but it shows the struggles of people in the north of England during the 70s. I do not need to read the exhibition text to understand this photo. I believe I need to see the photo in the context of a series to understand the intended message. The title does not help figure out what is going on in the picture. The style of the photo does remind me of photos I did in week eight due to the lighting.

Week 8
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have chosen a photograph by Lorenzo Castore found in the NERO category. The composition of the image is cool to look at the order of the spot lights and how they all curve leaving an interesting image for the viewer. The use of light is barely there but you can tell the photo was taken during the day and the mood of the photograph seemed sad and lonely. The photograph is of an empty street but I interpret it as a lonely day in a boring street yet the sides of the picture look blurry as if the picture is being taken in a car.
The second picture of my recreation.
Tumblr media
This photograph is taken in response to my recreation photo.
The process of recreating the photo we have chosen is difficult to do because photos are taken at a specific time and to take a good recreation photo, it takes time to get a good photograph. I have learned that the mood is one of the most important factors that can bring many similarities in your photos together.
Progress Report: My photographic series is coming along great. My vision for my series is set on escalators and making sure to remember the story that will be told behind the photos.

Analysis of a Photographic Series
For my week 7 presentation on a chosen photographic series, I found it interesting how photos can go very well together and look like its meant to be together. Even though these photos look great together, they are not of the same room but still look nice together and fits into a series. My partner and I chose 3 of our favorite photographs that we believed looked perfect together. The first and last picture of the three we have chosen, have the same flooring but still its differences. I learned that the photographer, Candida Hofer, specializes on getting access to these beautiful places that tend to be filled with tourist and she takes photographs of them empty. These photographs will even be in exhibits so people can see them.

Beautiful Pictures of Something Ugly
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For this weeks blog, i decided to take beautiful pictures of something ugly. With my images, you see how the story unfolds. Walking around my accommodation, I saw lots of trash between the trees and I decided to take a picture of it because it is quite ironic that people have a trash near by and still decide to leave their trash lying around. Even if there isn't a trash around, nobody should liter. I took the photos with flash and decided to put this filter to show the mood of the photograph.

What is the artist trying to do/show/say with this work?
With this work, the artist is using shadows to show different sides of ones personality. Specifically, the sides that include shame or feeling repressed during ones childhood or adolescent years.
What techniques is she using to convey this message?
She is using specific shadows, lighting, and colors to show her message through the photographs. In the photographs, you can see shadows overlapping shadows which goes to show the amount of layers we have and even though we show the good parts, the broken parts of us are still there.
Do you consider these “good” photographs? Why / why not and what are your criteria?
I believe these are excellent photographs. I am not a photographer myself but I can tell the work that was put into these shots. The shadows overlapping other shadows, the use of props and getting. message out of them and the different shades of blue is what has me WOWed by these photographs.
Do they convey the artist’s intended message? (How does your answer to this questionrelate to your answer to the previous question?)
I convey the artist's intended message because I understand what she's trying to show and how she is showing it.
What is the effect of seeing several of her images together (as a series)?
Seeing all the images put together could look a bit hectic but all the colors used go together and they are all the same vibe.
How does the written information change your understanding of the photographs?
The written information changes my understanding of the photographs because now I am aware of what the photographer had in mind when taking these images and what she wanted to say.

Activity 1: I would say this is a portrait because it is a close-up photograph of a person and it is focused on them. I believe the composition of this photograph is perfect. From the moment I saw this photograph it caught my eye. The background is more bright which allows us to see the contrast of the person, the snake, and the headpiece better. Even though it seems like a snake is wrapped around the persons neck, it also seems like two pillows with a snake print when you look closely. the pose of the person depicts power but the facial expression shows that the person is tired in general or maybe about something specific. The mood of this photograph seems like the person is standing up for something but scared at the same time. Brave, courage but a bit hostile as well.
Tumblr media
Activity 2: In this image, it is pleasing to see the oval structure face on the left and the woman looking very seriously into the camera. It is a bright photo which makes the shirt the lady is wearing stand out more. I believe the focus is more on the art piece next to the woman instead of the woman. The pose of the woman makes me think she is tired or trying to say something with this object next to her. The art piece looks a lot like the person in the photograph and they are making the same face. The mood of this photograph seems down and upset, what creates this mood is the face being made, the colours of the photograph and her placing her hand on her head.

I think lighting can be used to enhance the feeling of a photograph. From looking at a photograph, you can get a sense on how the object or person might be feeling. For example when the image looks darker, the photograph can look more sad or like the person or object might be going through something. When a picture is brighter, it can represent a more happy moment. A big observation I made, was the color in the photo. Working with brightness, I was able to focus on one thing and see how the color of it might change, in this case the sky.

This photograph is called “North Sea Rig” and was taken by Maurice Broomfield in 1967. I believe this photograph was taken with a small aperture considering the background is not blurred and we have a clear view of what’s seen as far in the photo. I believe the use of light in this photo is what makes it stand out the most. The photographer was about to use the light of what is glowing in the sky to bright up the man on the boat. I believe the man in the photograph has been waiting to get to his destination and the light helps him find it.

Faces and Phases 2007-10
Zanele Muholi ( Photographer )
This series of photographs is of four portraits. The photographic series is about South African black people who are apart of the LGBTQIA+ community. I see the photographs as a statement of strength and resilience. The photographer has used color and patterns as the background of every photo but it does not take away the focus of who is being photographed. I believe the fact that they are all portraits, black and white, and the people are not smiling units these photos together. The biggest observation being the color and tone of the photos.

Walking around the city, I was looking for something out of the ordinary to take a photograph of. In this case, I found an extremely bent railing that could be understood of having changed someone’s life for the worse or maybe nothing happened, but how would we know?
Different points of view of a subject can tell you more information from that subject than just taking one photograph where we do not see much. We can relate to this railing because from our knowledge, we know the railing is not an easy thing to bend so we assume a car or motorcycle bent the railing. We can see by the “ becoming the subject” photo that it must’ve been easy for someone to be turning and crash into the railing. We do not know the story of what happened after but we know it must’ve not been pretty. Another thing we can notice by the photographs is the big bent under the railing which suggests something got pushed from below as well which pushed the railing up. One of the most important observations that show us that accidents are prone in this area is the bright yellow caution sign put in front of the railing.

In the Monica De Miranda exhibition, the two photographs that caught my eye first were “Whistle For the Wind” and “Mirror Me”.
In the first photograph, I chose this photograph because of the breathtaking view and the colors of the photograph. The point of view in the photo, you are seeing what the subject is seeing in the photo but you can see her as well. The scale of the picture also plays a big part because the color of the water is more visible. In another area of the museum, the photographer had the same picture in a different scale and it changed the colors of the picture, this goes to show the scale can show enormous difference in the photograph. This photograph is of a woman in a white dress staring out from a hill into a foggy but beautiful view. My interpretation of this photograph is this woman viewing a world of freedom with nature and that it all belongs to all of us.
In the second photograph, I chose this work because the woman is looking at herself the same way in three of the pictures and in the last picture she is staring at herself in amusement. For my first aspect, I choose to talk about point of view because the photo is being taken if the subject looking at herself. The second aspect is the use of light since we can see the picture is being taken with a flash but in a way where the picture looks older. The subject looks to be having a personal moment with herself in her personal thoughts of what the different head pieces mean and how she feels in them. In the first photo of this series, she looks at herself without a headpiece and I see the appreciation of her own hair, face and she does not need anything on to add onto her importance but herself.

Visiting Hyde Park, I took all my photos below eye level to capture the scale of nature. In the first photo, the goal was to capture the bright color of the sky and the tree as we are entering fall. It was a windy day in Hyde Park yet i captured a great photo with nothing interrupting it. I am a bit far from the tree but I wanted to capture the small bench in the back left corner and the green lawn to make the tree the main subject of the photo. In my second photo, it is being taken from a low angle but the sun shining from the back allows the trees to look darker and create a contrast between trees and sky. In the last picture, I wanted to use the leaves to block the sun but allowing it to peak for the use of light. I chose these three photos because they represent my day in Hyde Park and i made it a goal to choose 3 photos that show light coming from different angles.

On my day trip to Hyde Park, I took all the photos below eye level to portray the scale of nature. In the first photo of the tree, the light is coming from the left which could be seen by the shadow of the non visible smaller tree. My goal was to show the bright colors of the tree and the sky. The day was windy, but not visibly in the leaves so the tree seems still. In the second photo, the trees cannot be seen but the light from the back creates the shadows of the trees almost as if it were a city skyline. The foreground of the dark water reflecting the light of the setting sun creates a central section of light. This creates contrasting light across the landscape. In the last photo, the light is shining from behind the leaves which I used to slightly obscure the amount of light from the sun. In the series of photos you can see the slow progression from light to dark and the closing distance from the trees.
