Quote
The surface of the earth is the shore of the cosmic ocean. On this shore we’ve learned most of what we know. Recently we’ve waded a little way out, maybe ankle-deep, and the water seems inviting.
Carl Sagan, Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, 1990 (via humanoidhistory)

Ahh… nothing like a smoke to ease your cold. Sold in the 1940s, Marshall’s Med. Cigarettes were marketed for minor bronchial and throat irritations due to colds.
“In the early to mid-20th century, cigarettes would be produced with medicine in them and given to people with asthma and respiratory issues as a way to get the medicine into their lungs,” says Katherine Ott, curator in the Division of Medicine and Science at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History
One of the active ingredients was cubebs, an herb said to help loosen mucus along the respiratory tract.
Read about other historic cold and flu medicines that we can all be glad are no longer prescribed on Smithsonian Science
