I know a lot of the folks who follow me here are white. I know that statistically, white people are more likely to listen to other white people as voices of authority when it comes to race — especially if they do not know where to begin when it comes to anti-racist practices.

So, I'm gonna be brutally honest with you other white folks — You have to care about Black men. You have to care about Brown men. You have to care about Native and Indigenous men. You have to care about Asian men and that means all Asian men, not just East Asian men.

If you are white it is imperative to EVERY kind of anti-racist belief and action that you vocally care about men who are not white.

Lift up, support, and platform the voices of non-white women who are discussing misogyny in their communities, BUT — this is also imperative to remember — those conversations are not for you to add your voice to. Especially if you don't engage with non-white people, communities, or culture in literally any other context. It's straight up just not your space and that's okay. Sit with that. Please.

also a lot of youth shelters tend to require a signature from a legal guardian and i think that is so fucking stupid if a kid is running away from home the odds that their parent is going to cosign them doing so is pretty fucking slim and it just keeps kids trapped in abusive homes even moreso

also also ill go off for days about how odd as a diagnosis is kinda ass but fun fact "running away from home" is one of those "antisocial acts" that can aid a diagnosis of odd which is p grim if you think about it for more than three seconds

okay, you know what? Running away shouldn’t be a crime. It shouldn’t be dangerous, either. Any kid should be able to leave their parents if they want, for any reason. No I’m not kidding.

“But Rue, where will these kids stay? Do you want them on the streets?”

of course not. In an ideal world, a kids would have multiple adults other than their parents they could look to for care, but I recognize that that will never be a reality for every single child. So: youth shelters, if they have nowhere else to go. There should be clean, warm shelters where anyone under 18 can stay for as long as they need, no questions asked. (And of course shelters that aren’t just for kids, but we’re talking about youth rights right now)

“But Rue,” I hear you say, “what if some moody teenager runs away after an argument?”

First of all, I’d rather a thousand moody teenagers run away than one abused child be trapped. Second, so what if one does? A kid needs time away from their parents, so they leave. The vast majority of them will get some time to cool down and then go back home, and if they don’t want to go back, period? Then nine times out of ten, they have a good reason. (Because yes, as hard as it is for you to believe, kids are humans who have common sense.)

“Okay, but what about the one time out of ten the kid doesn’t have a good reason?”

Then the kid doesn’t have a good reason. It doesn’t change anything. If someone wants to break up with their partner because of something stupid, you wouldn’t say they legally shouldn’t be able to. (And if you would, then you’re just a bad person.) No one should have to be in a relationship, romantic or otherwise, that they don’t want to be in.

Telling someone they're complicit in their own oppression by working a minimum wage job at a grocery store makes them warranted in leaping over the counter to beat the shit out of you.

On Mother’s Day this year, Iris Dayana Monterroso-Lemus found herself alone in Guatemala, a country she hadn’t called home in more than a decade. At 38, the once-vibrant, curly-haired woman seemed withered and shaken.

After she was arrested by ICE in Lenoir City, she ended up at the Richwood Correctional Center in Louisiana, where she experienced the unimaginable. After pleading for medical help for days, she lost her mid-term pregnancy.

is this a safe space to say that the additions to the LGBT flag (“progress flag”) are well meaning but undermine the fact that the original colors symbolized vague concepts that could apply to anyone, rather than signifying specific types of human beings, which is, ironically, more “exclusionary” since it begs the question of why “X specific group of humans” aren’t being represented in the imagery now. the original flag completely avoided that conundrum. also it’s a little ugly.
