this is another sentiment i see a lot, and it’s usually from the grunge camp. gonna tell you this right now, the only part of this i’m really hung up on is the “female fronted” part.

the ones with an asterisk are the ones who went the gwen stefani route and left their band mates behind for a pop career or they probably could have at any point and i’m genuinely surprised they haven’t. i’ll explain this, too.

now. the phrase “female fronted bands” and also “women in music” annoys me, someone who has difficulty in fully identifying as a woman because i feel i’m at the mercy of gender roles, and like i let this gender down with something like this. like i’m strictly forbidden to say something like this otherwise i’m a misogynist and i should be ostracized twice over. (i just don’t feel like i belong with women anyways, like i’m a complete phony and i’m not feminine enough to identify as a woman, but that’s beside the point)

but it’s the same reason behind why my old friend lydia and i left s.w.e. when i was in stem school.

what’s the matter, you think the girls can’t be as good as the boys? or worse, you think they’re better than the boys? the sentiment itself makes it sound like you deserve special treatment all because you’re a woman. it sounds separatist, like just because you’re a woman, you’re put in a league of your own, and it doesn’t sound fair to me. at all. and whether you like it or not, a few of these have taken it a bit too far at this point and let it go to their heads (looking at you, lzzy hale and taylor momsen). and when gwen came back to no doubt, their music suffered - my brother and his wife at the time saw them back in 2010 and they actually left about halfway through. her marriage to yeehaw doesn’t help matters, either.

point is, there’s been and are lots of women in rock music so there’s really no reason to say that. and just ‘cause you see a female face there doesn’t mean they’re to be put up on a pedestal like that. we’re as human as our male counterparts, you know. i hope.
