Lavender Syrup!
I know there are a ton of recipes out there, but this one's mine. I put in a lot more lavender personally.
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 1/2 cup water (here's an opportunity to use moon water for extra energy. Full moon water can boost the lavender correspondences for psychic awareness and love, while water charged in phases leading up to the new moon can boost lavender's ability to banish/protect from depression and anxiety)
- 4 tablespoons lavender- Peace/anti-anxiety, happiness, love, sleep, psychic awareness/ability, creativity, protection from ill treatment.
- purple food coloring (optional)
Instructions:
Warm the water and sugar, mixing till it dissolves, then add the lavender and mix well. When the water is boiling, lower it to simmer, cover, and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes. If you leave it for longer, it will become bitter. Then strain into a bottle, and THEN add the food coloring if you want. This syrup is not meant to be very thick, so that it mixes easily with cold drinks just as well as warm. If you want it to be thicker, add more sugar.

The way that we learn about Helen Keller in school is an absolute outrage. We read “The Miracle Worker”- the miracle worker referring to her teacher; she’s not even the title character in her own story. The narrative about disabled people that we are comfortable with follows this format- “overcoming” disability. Disabled people as children. Helen Keller as an adult, though? She was a radical socialist, a fierce disability advocate, and a suffragette. There’s no reason she should not be considered a feminist icon, btw, and the fact that she isn’t is pure ableism- while other white feminists of that time were blatent racists, she was speaking out against Woodrew Wilson because of his vehement racism. She supported woman’s suffrage and birth control. She was an anti-war speaker. She was an initial donor to the NAACP. She spoke out about the causes of blindness- often disease caused by poverty and poor working conditions. She was so brave and outspoken that the FBI had a file on her because of all the trouble she caused.
Yet when we talk about her, it’s either the boring, inspiration porn story of her as a child and her heroic teacher, or as the punchline of ableist, misogynistic jokes. It’s not just offensive, it’s downright disgusting.

“you talk like a smart/pretentious person” actually I just forget simple words constantly and am forced to rummage through my brain for the nearest synonym, which is usually twice as long and needlessly specific

I see y'all claiming to support mentally ill people while making fun of the homeless drunk who talks to himself.
I see y'all claiming to support mentally ill people while avoiding and making fun of the weird kid in your class who has too blank a stare, who speaks oddly or not at all, who comes to school with greasy hair in yesterday’s clothes.
I see y'all claiming to support mentally ill people while looking down on and making fun of unemployed and less educated people and adults who still live with their parents as if these people are personally at fault for not being able to fit into a system that wasn’t built with them in mind.
I see y'all claiming to support mentally ill people while going “he must be insane” when hearing about killings in the media, not thinking about how the faulty association between mental illness and violence aggravates police brutality and other violence towards especially visibly mentally ill people of color.
I see y'all. And I don’t like what I see.

I think something that doesn’t get talked about enough is the way that being gay can put you in more dangerous situations with relationships. so many times gay people are just happy that someone is interested in them that there isn’t as much consideration of if that person is good for them, because hey, at least they’re gay too and that worries me a lot :/
