“Me?”, Lucas had not realised that the woman was talking to him until she offered her hand for him to shake. He had been lost in his thougths, eyes growing ever more distant. But he snapped out of it as soon as she approached him. “I grew up here, but I was a super annoying kid so I do not mind people trying their best to forget me”, he shook her hand, laughing about his own joke - the best kind of self defense. “I spend some time on the mainland, college and stuff. But I recently got back. Don’t you own that new vine bar though? I think I saw you around.”

She shrugged and shook her head. “I mean, you couldn’t have been that annoying if I can’t remember you. No offense for the forgetting part! Believe me there were plenty of annoying kids from the past that I wish I could forget though.” Piper picked up on the way he said ‘stuff’ but didn’t want to badger. Following the change of subject she added “Oh yeah, that’s me! It’s one of the only things holding me here, but I love it.” Feeling around for a seat she motioned to an empty table, curious if he’d like to sit. “You said you recently got back? I miss traveling. Did a passion project pull you back too? Y’know besides college.” She asked jokingly.

Alex smiled, she wasn’t used to so many people being gathered around the park… but then perhaps the nice weather brought everybody out. Alex often came out here to sit alone, her airpods filling her ears with familiar music from her teens. She took out the headphone, looking at the person’s hand before taking it. “Alex.” She replied simply, glancing around the park. “Born and bred in Maple Creek, although i suppose i try to avoid you know the town community spirit… you okay? Looking for a friendly face?” She patted the picnic blanket beside her. 

“Nice to meet you Alex! And oh. That would explain why I didn’t recognize you.” With a grateful smile Piper sat next to the other on the offered spot. “Yeah, I’m alright. I’ve only just got back to Maple Creek not too long ago, and mostly been focusing on work.” She gestured out towards the rest of the park. “So now I’m trying to slip back into that old familiarity of this place.”

It was a rare occasion for Lauren to find herself at Vine and Dine, considering that she was probably the last person to go on a night out on a Friday night. But there she was, enjoying a glass of wine when she had been approached by the rather familiar owner. “Very funny, Piper. Just because I haven’t been here in months.” She teased the other with a rather playful eyeroll. 

“Well I mean y’know it seems as if you’ve become a stranger, we hardly see you around here or anywhere for that matter!” Piper let a small laugh escape. “You can’t become a prisoner to your job Lauren. I know, hypocritical of me to say as I’m here right now. Hold on..” She disappeared quickly only to return with a wine bottle offering refills. “On the house?” lifting the bottle high with a big smile and shrugging. “Maybe it’ll be enough enticement to get you out more often?”

The atmosphere was comforting but the amount of people around made Piper nervous. She searched the space for something to focus on instead and abruptly stopped when she noticed the person in front of her. "Hi. I'm Piper." She offered a hand and pushed the hair from her face with the other. "I don't think I've seen you around before, are you from here? Or just passing by?"

character biography

Ever since a young age Piper always thought she would live in her hometown, but things changed as she got older. She found herself in various locations, even in different countries at times. Always been known to do things her own way, that’s how she was able to make money and afford her trips which eventually ended up with her back home in Maple Creek. Although, she’s questioning why she ever wanted to stay here indefinitely.

The only family she has in Maple Creek is her mom and younger twin siblings. Piper’s dad was never in the picture until recently when Piper was able to afford her own business. Conflicted, she knows that she should cut her dad off for good, but deep down she’s always longed for that connection.

When work isn’t consuming her days, Piper likes to take time for herself. Often she’s spending time reading, practicing piano, baking, taking pictures or spending time with her family. She also enjoys taking care of local strays, and will do whatever is needed to help them.

She’s always been told that she’s witty, passionate and incredibly impatient. Authenticity is very important to her. So she believes she’s good at reading people, whether that’s true or not she’s usually quick to bond with people even though at times she really shouldn’t.
