In Greek mythology, Callisto was a hunting companion of the Goddess Artemis. Described as a daughter of King Lycaon or sometimes a nymph. There is a version of her story where Zeus seduces her disguised as Artemis, which was the inspiration behind my first sketch... but I'm also very into the idea that Artemis had feelings for Callisto as well. 🌙✨🌿🐻

[warning for rape and abuse]
I’ve been seeing quite a lot of pro-Paris posts on Tumblr of late, and can we just talk about this?
In the Iliad (and what survives of the cyclic poems), Paris is *not* a nice individual. He is cowardly, abusive, and refuses to take full responsibility for his actions.
First, his relationship with Helen is not romantic. They are not star-crossed lovers with all the world against them. He kidnaps her from her husband (who she actually chose from all the Greek princes) via what is essentially divinely powered date-rape. And when Aphrodite’s influence wears off, she hates herself for it, she hates Paris, and she hates Aphrodite. Or are we forgetting the end of Book 3 (‘κεῖσε δ᾽ ἐγὼν οὐκ εἶμι’, ‘I shall not go to that place [Paris’s bed]’)? Once again, Aphrodite has to force her into sleeping with him. Such a happy and well-founded relationship, no? Never mind that the only reason Helen is actually there is because she was used to bribe Paris in his position as judge of Miss Olympia 1200BC. It’s very telling that Helen thinks more highly of Hector than of Paris.
Let’s also look at how he acquired Helen: by taking advantage of his position as an honoured guest in the royal house of Sparta to steal their treasure and kidnap Helen. And as far as violations of xenia go, that pretty much trumps almost everything in the Odyssey apart from maybe the suitors. And then, when the entirety of Greece turns up clad in bronze and looking very angry on his father’s doorstep, rather than doing the sensible thing he acts like a spoiled child and forces the war to happen. Even ten years into this very bloody war, he’s only willing to give back the treasure and not Helen. He makes Agamemnon’s treatment of Achilles and Briseis look almost reasonable!
Shall we talk about Paris’s military prowess next? Despite being the cause of the war, he is conspicuous in his absence from the battle lines. He has no aristeia, and his battle tally comes to three minor Greeks, Nestor’s horse, and wounding Diomedes and Machon. Even Aeneas is more competent. Not only that, but with one exception, all of his hits are either from afar with the bow or while his enemy is fleeing. Even the one proper fight is won while Hector is storming along beside him. So very heroic. And when the battle resumes after his failed duel with Menelaus, where is Paris? Oh, he’s having sex with an unwilling Helen, rather than fighting in the war he caused.
If you want a nice Paris, go watch Troy or read some tragedy. Just don’t insist that the Iliadic Paris (coward, violator of guest-right, probable rapist) is a positive individual.

intrigued by how there are several instances of athena making odysseus look taller and buffer than he is when he needs to impress strangers, and no mention of him reverting in between. i'm imagining him just gradually getting huger all through the odyssey like he's chugging ent-draught
