"A boat party on the clean river" (Korean title: 주유청강 Romanization: Ju Yu Cheong Kang) by Sin Yun-bok, also known as Hyewon, Korean painter of the Joseon Dynasty period. This painting is part of the Hyewon pungsokdo, an album of the genre paintings.
In this painting Hyewon depicted a gisaeng playing a saenghwang (far right), a traditional korean wind instrument.
Kisaeng, also called ginyeo, were women from outcast or slave families who were trained to be courtesans, providing artistic entertainment and conversation to men of upper class. First appearing in Goryeo, kisaeng were the government's legal entertainers, required to perform various functions for the state.
