THIS.
I’ve always viewed reading/watching a film etc as a great little opportunity to get a different pov than my own. If I want more me I can just bounce around my own head for a bit.
Besides 9 times out of 10 when ppl stan a character bc they’re sooo relatable to them- it’s either a total misread of the character, poor attempt to jam them into some mundane tropes, or completely delusional 😭.
this might be controversial in the book sphere but personally, i'd like to disregard the notion that readers must "connect" and "empathize" with a character in order to fully enjoy their story.
seriously, stop opening books looking for a character or story to relate to and start looking for a reason to care. is this character interesting enough to follow? is the plot moving in a way that begs your attention? can you feel the stakes looming over your head? does the conflict keep things tense? do you care about what could happen next?
you shouldn't need relatability to enjoy a book, you need a reason to keep turning the page. books are literally about new and different experiences. if originality and variety bother you, stick to fanfiction.

Funniest part of Saltburn is (arguably) how Farleigh did his whole trash talking speech about how that’s his house & Oliver doesn’t belong there bc he’s so socially beneath them, while Oliver just silently out-cunted him w his baby girl look, got him permanently cut off & kicked out the next morning, & lit owned the whole thing in the end 😭✌️🕺

I can’t stop thinking of this interview w Archie Madekwe re Farleigh from collider, bc whilst I think it’s important for an actor to never reduce the character they’re playing w a judgement call like : villain, bully etc. so as not to choke their interpretation, my guy is lit describing a bully 😭😆. He’s like ~ it’s a passing sarcastic comment about the jacket, he doesn’t even remember Oliver. He’s just making fun of him. ~ Yes hon, bullies rarely give af about the ppl they’re tearing down 😭. That’s a bully cutting others to raise themselves up 😆🫡. Anyway

The way stans talk about the characters they “relate to” should come w a trigger warning; trauma dumping half their life to “discuss the character”. “It’s me” “He’s so real” “He’s so relatable”. Plz embrace your basic self in silence & stop projecting and projectile vomiting your life over every discussion of every piece of media 😭. & ofc any criticism of said character or just someone not vibing w them is a direct & personal attack

Lmao it’s so funny to see all the “farleigh ate!” “Farleigh saw right through Oliver tHat’s why he was mean” “farleigh had to work so hard to keep the family interested in him 🥺” “He’s the most hUman” always keeping place for ~I see my lame petty little self in him the most~ 😗 - stan big brains at work. Like babes farleigh was bullying Oliver from the second he saw him dissing his clothes & tittering w his followers (and sniping Pamela at dinner ) bc it was his way of illustrating he was ~in~ & they were ~out~, & clutching to his privilege. He was related to the family tho so he wasn’t a passing summer guest. He was raised w their kids & welcomed back even after trying to sell their shit.
He was a pathetic little parasite, whining despite his privilege, who got outwitted & outmaneuvered & got his ass permanently “exiled”. Or as my buddy put it best - “how was he sucking off the teachers & still not at least thriving academically” 😭🫡

Note
saltburn IS based on a book called brideshead revisited by evelyn waugh. they mention it near the beginning of the movie during a conversation between felix and oliver. theres a few other references to the book like felix pointing out his father’s old teddy bear and them lying naked in the field and on the roof
Ah thank you; I’ve read (& watched adaptations of brideshead rev.) & Saltburn is not an adaptation of it. It’s more like inspiration/mood board/vibes. BR is a classic & a worthy (depressingaf)read, but do not read BR expecting Saltburn plz 😭🫶 x

The worst thing about Saltburn is that it’s not an adaptation & there’s not a 400+ page book I can read to get MORE of it.

The thing about me is I understand Farleigh completely & he’s still my least fav character because I can’t stand that type of person; predictable, petty and pathetic. Making sure he reminds others how they don’t fit in so by excluding them it might cement his own precarious position. Oliver put in the work 😗
