Artificial intelligence claims it has written a cake recipe.
I’m training a neural network to generate recipes based on a database of about 30,000 example recipes. One of the recipe titles it invents most often is cake - Chocolate Cake, Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate Cake, Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Chips, etc. But when I look at the ingredients list and directions… I have my suspicions that following this recipe may not actually result in cake. For example:
BAKED OTHER LIE 1993 CAKE
appetizers, fish
8 rounds; chicken ¼ lb butter (soaked) 1 can tomato sauce (½ lb) 1 salmon steaks sauteed ½ teaspoon red pepper, chunked 1 tablespoon margarine or oil
Meanwhile, transfer the chicken breast to a serving platter and simmer for about 5 minutes, then lemon juice that has been stirring well; if on the side, as becomes warmed, carefully frost them with a sauce. Spread them and garnish with water or parsley.

Dags: Rehearsal start and extra date
Last Friday the 10th of March was rehearsal start for my opera Dags at Operahögskolan. And I’m also glad to announce that an extra date has been set for the opera at the 26th of April. I’m very excited to follow the development of the opera from score in to a full opera on stage. Dags is my first opera, a short chamber opera about the end of the world. With libretto by Emma Palmkvist and music by…

Goethe’s Color Wheel, 1809
I’m a sucker for the color wheel. I was a sucker for it as an art student, and I’m a sucker for it now. It’s my go-to exercise when I’m dealing with creative blocks. And Color Theory–of all stripes, be it Goethe, Runge, Isaac Newton, Munsell or Pantone–is a great foundation for understanding color and color harmonies in any art or design field.
Phillipp Otto Runge’s Color Sphere, 1810
I do admit however, that I become overwhelmed when I’m selecting colors for a knitting project. I’m confronted with the limitless realms of what’s possible, and the simultaneous limitations of what’s available and what I can afford. I have to ask questions and then answer those questions before my project has even begun! What’s the fiber like? What’s the season? What mood am I in? What’s available to me? What technique do I want to try? Unlike painting, I can’t mix a new palette each time I work. I’m working with fibers that are one, singular hue each. My selections are limited to the manufacturers’ specs–pigments, dye lots, and fiber types, and of course, what’s in my stash.
So, when making color choices, I like to employ a practical HUE-CHROMA-VALUE color system, special attention being paid to color selection, as opposed to color mixing. Perhaps so that I can get to the knitting, and then then to the realized work, the lovely and unique hand-knitted garment-slash-work of ART.
Bringing visual aides to the LYS allows for a way to eyeball color against a measurable standard. These are:
A Color Guide, found in most art supply stores
A Kodak Gray Scale card, found in photography stores
The above color guide provides a template for the color theory basics:
Hue (Chroma)
Tint (Hue + White)
Tone (Hue + Gray)
Shade (Hue + Black)
Complementary, Split Complementary, Triads and Tetrads
For better color harmony, try a split complementary combo, and vary your value for each color. For example, Blue-Violet + Yellow Orange Tint instead of Blue and Orange; Blue-Green Shade (Deep Turqoise) + Light Brown (or a variation on Orange Tint). Try selecting a heather wool of either color to see how it’s affected.
A Kodak Guide, or any Grayscale card, even one printed from an inkjet printer, helps gauge and compare values of the yarns being considered. If you’re having difficulty gauging value difference in your given lighting, take a picture with your phone, and convert it to grayscale on the spot.
Which brings me to VALUE. Value is of equal, or perhaps more importance than Hue when when it comes to yarn selection. As a general rule, vary between at least two steps between colors to avoid too much blending, especially in fair-isle knitting.
The more value difference between colors, the greater the contrast, which affects the whole garment. Low contrast will lend to a soft, earthy look, whereas high contrast will be graphic and punchy.
Additionally, I find this Knit Picks Palette jpeg to be a useful tool for color comparison (even if I’m not using that particular brand of yarn). If you convert it to a gray scale, you can easily eyeball value differences, so that when you are making a selection, you won’t have any illusion as to the value changes between colors. In a previous project, the Green Isle Socks, I did not employ this technique. The two colors I used, Camel and Masala, are very close in value. As it turns out, I liked the results in the end. Hey.
Above all, it’s supposed to be FUN, right? So have fun playing around with colors. Think outside the box, and try swatching with some unconventional combinations. Don’t be afraid to try using colors you normally would not pick. You can find beauty in almost any hue, chroma, or value, and the beauty is in the endless possibilities.

Quintet composed between 2013 & 2014. First performance by musicians from the Norrbotten NEO ensemble, 9th of april 2014. Conducted by Ruut Kiiski. Kim Hellgren - Viola Elmér Lavotha - Violoncello Mårten Landström - Piano Daniel Saur - Percussion Sara Hammarström - Alto Flute Programme note: “Arcana” is a piece that from the start was composed with the help of a turn with tarot cards. The aim was that all the cards (which all have a very distinct character) would be translated to concrete musical expressions that could in turn be layered on each other. But as the piece started taking shape it gradually started to focus more on the connection between the expressions rather than the contrasts that was from the beginning intended to be created.

Luke and I were looking at Hieronymus Bosch’s painting The Garden of Earthly Delights and discovered, much to our amusement, music written upon the posterior of one of the many tortured denizens of the rightmost panel of the painting which is intended to represent Hell. I decided to transcribe it into modern notation, assuming the second line of the staff is C, as is common for chants of this era.
so yes this is LITERALLY the 600-years-old butt song from hell
EDIT: I still can’t believe this took off like it did this is crazy??? Just wanted to let people know that there are indeed errors in the transcription and this is indeed not a very good recording (I threw this together in like 30 minutes at 1 in the morning,) but I’m working with the music department at my college to get the transcription more accurate!
in the meantime enjoy this fantastic choral arrangement by wellmanicuredman i’m in love
