How To Properly Clean A Plunger and Other Essential Bathroom Tools
Even cleaning tools require periodic cleaning. While towels and sponges are often on the forefront of your mind, certain bathroom tools like toilet plungers, toilet brushes and their holders are often neglected on the cleaning list. Certainly, these implements are some of the filthiest in the house, so its important to know how to clean them properly if you don’t use a maid service. To aid in tackling these tasks, here are some tips concerning how to choose the best plumber along with some surefire potty tool cleaning recipes and methods.
Choosing The Best Plunger
We touch upon this topic first because it’s surprising just how many individuals actually end up buying a plunger that actually isn’t designed for the toilet at all, but rather for the sink. Let’s wrap up this confusion before moving on the cleaning tips.
Common Sink Plunger: These are simple rubber cups attached to a stick, and they are designed to plunge sinks and tubs. While they are effective to some degree on toilets, sink/tub plungers don’t get enough suction without an additional seal commonly found on proper toilet plungers.
Accordion Plunger: These plungers are designed for tough toilet clogs, but they aren’t the easiest to use or clean due to their accordion design at the base. They have a small cup that situates over the drain hole, but getting it into proper placement can be challenging.
Basic Toilet Plunger: Essentially, these have a large cup just like sink plungers, but there is also a soft, rubber flap that extends from the inside of the cup. These flaps fit well over the toilet’s drain hole, so it’s simple to form a good suction to clear clogs. Because these are simple, easy to clean, and can also be used on sinks and tubs, this is the best all-around plunger for the home.
Regardless of the type of plunger you choose, cleanings will definitely be necessary after each use to prevent bacteria growth and unpleasant odors.
Cleaning Solutions For Bathroom Tools
There are a number of cleaning solutions that can be purchased or made at home that will effectively kill the bacteria, funky smells and remove stuck on debris from your toilet brushes, plungers and stands. Here are some recipes we recommend for getting the funk out of your dirtiest cleaning supplies.
Pre-Made Anti-Bacterial Bowl Cleaner—There are a number of aerosol and spray type cleaning supplies designed for toilet bowls and general bathroom cleaning, but there generally aren’t any labeled specifically for brushes, plungers and stands. However, as long as they contain either oxygen bleach, chlorine or both, they should suffice.
Chlorine Bleach Mixture—As one of the most powerful germ-killing agents available, a simple splash of bleach in the toilet or in a bucket of water can become a great cleaning and soaking solution that kills germs like salmonella and E.Coli. The downsides are that bleach is not exactly environmentally friendly and it leaves a potent aroma behind. Pour 2 to 3 caps of bleach into a bucket of 1 gallon of water or your toilet to create a solution.
Organic Cleaning Solutions—Apple cider vinegar creates an incredible organic cleaner and requires an equal mixture of 5% potency of vinegar and water for the best efficacy. As a natural acid that has nearly the same germ-killing powers of bleach, this gem is a homemade solution that can clean just about any surface in the home.
With a cleaning solution of your choice, let us proceed to the down and dirty of actually getting the grime off these toiletry cleaning implements.
How To Clean A Plunger
First, give your plunger a good rinse under running water, which can be from a running toilet or a spray nozzle in a hose or sink. Then soak and swish the plunger in a bucket of your bleach solution or organic mixture for at least an hour. A few caps of straight apple cider vinegar or bleach can be added to create an ‘instant’ bucket. Rinse the plunger with fresh water and allow it to dry either in the sun, laid in the tub or wedged between the toilet seat and the bowl with the wet side in the bowl.
How To Clean A Toilet Brush
Naturally, the best time to clean a toilet brush is fairly close to the time after duty calls. At a minimum, spray some pre-prepped disinfectant on the brush, allow it to sit for a few minutes and rinse under hot water. For deep cleaning, follow the same directions as above concerning cleaning plungers, and don’t forget to dry this piece for several hours prior to returning it into brush holder.
How To Clean A Toilet Brush Holder
Once you have taken the time to clean the plunger and the brush, it can be easy to overlook the container that you are about to place them back into—the tool holders. Whether they are a separate or singular holder system, use that disinfectant spray to clean away all the gunk and grime that has accumulated in the container. The key to success in this project is to cleanse all of the components at the same time immediately after cleaning or de-clogging the toilet. However, there is one way to avoid having to dirty your hands even slightly and still meet these goals…
Enjoy The Perks Of A Housekeeping Service
Don’t have the time to concern yourself with nonsense like scrubbing toilets, much less toilet cleaning devices? If so, you are amid a growing number of busy professionals or homemakers that have better things to do with their time and efforts. However, just one phone call to Planet Maids at (212) 381-0499 or online to explore our standard and customized cleaning packages to meet your needs.

10 Boston Stereotypes
Whether Boston is your hometown or you’ve only lived in The Hub for a few years, chances are you’ve heard about a few Boston stereotypes. While stereotypes should never be taken completely seriously, stereotypes almost always harbor a kernel of truth. Read this article to learn about 10 of the most prevalent Boston stereotypes.
1. Bostonians Are Bleeding Heart Liberals
One pervasive Boston stereotype is that the city is home to millions of bleeding heart liberals. Historically, Boston has been one of the most liberal cities in the United States. For example, in the early 19th century, Boston served as the center of the women’s rights and abolitionist movement. Recently, Massachusetts became the first state to give same-sex couples marriage licenses. Since 2006, Boston has been striving to provide affordable health insurance.
2. Bostonians Think They’re The Best of the Best
Another stereotype that Boston’s are infamous for is thinking they are God’s gift to the world. However, like many stereotypes, this one has a kernel of truth in it. From the sport teams, to the hospitals, to the education system, to even Boston cleaning companies, Boston often comes out on top. While the sports aren’t always consistent when it comes to fulfilling Boston’s standards, Boston still has Harvard University and their hospitals. If you want to enjoy the best of the best, Boston may be the right city for you.
3. Bostonian Sports Fans Have It All
In comparison to any other Major Leagues team, the Red Sox has won more World Series games in the last 10 years. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Boston sports fans have a reputation for being spoiled. Despite winning major championships, Boston sports fans have a tendency of complaining every time a game doesn’t go their way. Of course, many sports fans from other cities have a hard time taking Bostonian sports fans seriously when they seem to have it all.
4. Bostonians Love Their Accent and You Have No Choice But to Agree
The well-known test for a Boston accent is saying the phrase, “Park the car in Harvard yard.” If someone grew up in Boston you can usually tell by the unique way they say their Rs. While many people try and fail to imitate the notorious Boston accent, a true Bostonian knows that a childhood in The Hub is necessary to truly nail the accent. Another phrase that is a common test for a Boston accent is “We went to the Harvard party. It was wicked pissah.”
5. Everyone In Boston Has a Little Irish in Them
One Boston stereotype with a lot of truth in it is that everyone in Boston has a little Irish in them. If you love history, you may know that many immigrants arrived to Boston Harbor fleeing the Great Irish Famine. Since then, the culture of the Irish has left a huge mark on Boston. Some examples of the impact of Irish culture that you can point to include the history of the Irish Mob to the naming of Boston’s basketball team as the Celtics. A particularly infamous celebration of Irish culture is the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in Boston. On this day, many people go to this parade to get drunk, be happy, and just have a good time.
6. Bostonians Love Alcohol
Speaking of Irish culture, Bostonians have a reputation for loving alcohol. Apparently, all Bostonians thinks every night is the perfect time for a wicked pissah. In fact, the “Daily Beast” deemed Boston as the The Drunkest City in the United States in 2011 and 2012. The study that the “Daily Beast” conducted revealed that the typical Bostonian drinks more than 15 alcoholic drinks in a month. More than 20 percent of Bostonians are considered binge drinkers while 7 percent of Bostonians are heavy drinkers.
7. Bostonians Have a Tacky Sense of Fashion
While Boston has a top-notch reputation in many areas, such as professional sports and education, fashion is not Boston’s strong point. The climate in Boston is incredibly cold and wet. In fact, Boston is particularly notorious for its brutal winters. Of course, this keeps cold weather apparel companies thriving. In the fall and winter in Boston, you can expect to see a lot of Bostonians sporting leggings, Uggs, and North Face gear. Of course, you will also see a lot of orange parking cones, which are seen as a huge eyesore.
8. Bostonians Worship Dunkin Donuts
While Starbucks may be extremely popular elsewhere, Dunkin Donuts is probably the most the loved coffee shop in Boston. Some common nicknames for the coffee and donut shop include Dunkies and Dunks. No matter what you call it, you can count on the typical Bostonian to worship Dunkin Donuts. You will see this donut shop on just about every street in the city. When the Red Sox won the World Series, Dunkin Donuts handed out free coffee to sports fans.
9. Bostonians Are Incredibly Intelligent
Due to the presence of Harvard and MIT, Bostonians have a reputation for being very intelligent. Boston was home to the first public school system in the United States. Since then, the education system in the city has grown significantly. While Harvard and MIT are the most widely known schools in the city, Boston is home to more than 100 colleges and universities.
10. Bostonians Are Horrible Drivers
Bostonians are incredibly notorious for being horrible drivers. However, Bostonians are not entirely at fault for this stereotype. If you’ve ever been to Boston, it is easy to see that the city layout doesn’t have much reason or rhyme to it. Therefore, drivers tend to act irrationally. Don’t be surprised to see sudden cut-offs and illegal U-turns on a regular basis in The Hub. Bad driving is something that you will have to come to terms with if you decide to move to Boston.

Hiring A Maid Service In Boston
Many people have a hard time finding the time to fulfill their responsibilities and spend quality time with their family and friends. If you’re one of these people, you should consider hiring a maid service. Here is some information that you should consider before hiring a maid service in Boston.
What To Consider When Hiring A Boston Maid Service
Cleaning Products
Some independent housekeepers and maid service companies will expect you to provide all the cleaning products. If a maid service includes house cleaning products, you should inquire about what types of products they use and whether they contain bleach, ammonia, or other harsh chemicals. You want to make sure the products used are safe for pets and children.
Many maid service companies advertise about using green products. However, not maid service companies follow through with their promises about being environmentally friendly. Take the time to find out whether a maid service company is green certified. If a maid service is certified, you should ask which certifying body provided them with a certification.
Ask whether the products are effective in disinfecting pathogens like Staphylococcus, Salmonella, and E.coli and cleaning. It is essential that you have a good understanding of which cleaning products are being used and the impact, if any, that they will have on your health and environment.
In order to be “green” certified, some green cleaning companies are using cleaning products that have watered down chemical ingredients. Keep in mind that this can negatively impact the performance and effectiveness of the product.
Environmentally safe products typically contain bio-based ingredients that contain enzymes and natural bacteria. These are nonpathogenic environmental isolates that emulate the way nature cleans itself. These natural substances are included in degreasers and hard surface cleaners to produce an effective yet safe cleaning solution.
References
When choosing a maid service, you should ask for references and work history. You should also consider how many years the maid service company has been in business. Some questions to ask when you call for references include:
Do you have any complaints? How did the maid service deal with the complaints?
How long have you been using the maid service?
Would you recommend this maid service to a friend or family member?
Getting references is one of the best ways that you can confirm that a maid service is reliable.
Bonding
Another factor that you should consider is whether you will be protected in the event that theft occurs. The maid service you choose should be bonded for its clientele. While most maid services are bonded, many are not. Also, you will come across maid services that are bonded to protect themselves and not the clientele.
Insurance
If a maid suffers a slip and fall while mopping the floor in your kitchen, it is possible that your homeowner’s policy won’t cover the incident. The maid service you choose should have employee accident and liability coverage. The coverage should include the maids, the company, and the home. Proper insurance is an absolute must.
Employee Screening and Hiring Process
Before you choose a maid service in Boston, take the time to consider the employee screening and hiring process. The maid service should ask for employee references and conduct criminal background checks. Also, the residence status of employees should be confirmed.
Consider whether the maid service uses only internal employees or if they use subcontractors. If a maid service uses subcontractors, they probably don’t provide staff training and they may not offer liability insurance.
Equipment
Yet another factor that you want to consider is the quality of the equipment used to clean your home. Inferior equipment will probably not get your home as clean as you want it. For example, if you have ever used a clogged or old vacuum, you know from personal experience that cleaning with inferior equipment is difficult. Pay close attention to the quality and the effectiveness of the filtration system.
Satisfaction
The main concern of a maid service company should be your satisfaction. Therefore, you should determine whether the maid service you’re considering has a method to measure the satisfaction of their customers. The fact that a maid service company has a method to measure satisfaction suggests they value their customers. A maid service may ask you to fill out a survey on paper or online. The manager may contact you after a cleaning to receive feedback.
Of course, while the satisfaction of customers is essential, it should not be up to the customers to do quality assurance. Unfortunately, some maid service companies will only evaluate the quality of the services they provide when they receive complaints. Therefore, the maid service company you choose should have quality assurance procedures to ensure every house cleaning meets the highest of standards. Look for a maid service that has a manager who is responsible for inspecting cleanings to make sure the quality of service is high.
Guarantee
Many Boston maid service companies offer a guarantee. However, not all maid service companies are willing to honor the guarantee, no questions ask. Not only should you look for a maid service company that offers a guarantee, but you should also read reviews or ask around to determine whether the guarantees are actually honored. Have a good understanding of the nature of the guarantee and the steps that you will need to take to use the guarantee.
Taxes
If you hire a maid or housekeeper regularly, you may need to pay social security and other taxes, according to federal law. Most maid service companies withhold taxes for employees. According to federal law, you need to pay social security and other taxes if you pay a maid more than $1,200 per year.
Free up some valuable time for yourself by hiring a maid or housekeeper to clean your home. For more information about hiring a maid service in Boston, don’t hesitate to contact us.

How To Insult Someone From Boston
There are a few things you can do if you want to insult someone from Boston. One of the most obvious things is to make fun of their accent. Another is to talk trash about their sports teams. Bostonians are known for being loyal fans. That loyalty extends to their family, friends, and neighbors, too. All you have to do is watch who’s shoveling snow for who in any neighborhood to realize that in Boston, being neighborly isn’t considered old-fashioned. It’s just good manners, like inviting someone in for a cup of hot chocolate after they’ve shoveled your walk.
With so many sports teams in the city, it’s almost always game night in Boston at someone’s house. Having people over isn’t just fun. According to the research studies in this article, we humans, no matter where we live, need close friendships to maintain our physical and emotional health. Inviting someone into our home is a big step. You could even say it’s the step that transforms someone from just an acquaintance into a friend. If you really want to insult someone from Boston, when they take that step and invite you over, criticize their housekeeping. Chances are, they’ll never invite you back.
There’s a lot of evidence that most people find preparing for company stressful. The number one reason for that is that they worry that people will judge their housekeeping skills. Okay, let’s face it, cleaning takes time, and most people can think of at least a hundred other ways they’d rather spend theirs than cleaning. One of the most common family arguments is about housework. While nobody wants to get food poisoning from a salmonella-infested countertop, nobody wants to be the one that always has to disinfect the counter, either. Ditto for cleaning and disinfecting the bathroom bowl. Everybody wants a bathtub and shower free from illness and allergy-causing mold, but not everybody wants to get on their hands and knees and scrub it every few days.
Sometimes these arguments, rather than making relationships closer and improving mental and emotional health, can result in divorce. There are a lot of reasons people can have incompatible housekeeping styles. Some people are just naturally more organized than others, and sometimes, people who love to collect things fall in love with people who can’t stand clutter. People also grow up differently and have different definitions of what “clean” means. For one person, clean might mean that there isn’t a speck of dust anywhere, while for another, it might just mean that there is no active fungus growing in the refrigerator.
No matter where you fall on the cleanliness scale, clutter is a major cause of stress, especially when considering having people over. It’s hard enough to reach a compromise about who’s going to be responsible for daily household chores like washing dishes, vacuuming and dusting. Just the thought of having to do extra cleaning before company has resulted in a lot of parties being cancelled—or not being planned at all. If you want to spend less time arguing about housework and more time enjoying visits with friends, maybe it’s time to think about hiring a cleaning service.
Utilizing a Boston cleaning service doesn’t have to mean making a weekly commitment or throwing your whole budget out the window. Sitting down and making a list of what you’d want a cleaning service to do—and how often—can help you understand and define your housekeeping priorities. It’s a good idea to write down how much time each job takes and add them up. That will help you see whether you actually have enough time to keep your home as clean as you’d like it to be, and if you’re willing to invest that much time in cleaning. This exercise can also help your family reach some agreement about what clean means. Maybe going a week without mopping the floor grosses you out, but doesn’t bother anyone else in your household. Maybe you couldn’t care less whether the bookshelf ever gets dusted and even enjoy writing messages in dust, but your partner thinks dusty furniture is disgusting.
When you’re considering the expense of a cleaning service, you should also consider the cost of cleaning supplies. Surprisingly, the average family spends about $600 a year on them. (It’s also getting difficult to know what’s unhealthier—-dirt, or some of the toxic chemicals found in cleaning products.) Cleaning services provide all the cleaning supplies, and they’ve done their research about which are most effective, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly. They also provide tools of the trade, like vacuums, which are likely to be of a higher quality than most individuals can afford to buy. Another cost a good cleaning service can save you is the cost of allergy medications. Many allergies are aggravated, or even caused by, dust or mold. An occasional deep-cleaning can prevent any illnesses caused by the 19 different kinds of bacteria commonly found in the average bathroom.
It’s possible to arrange for a monthly service that takes care of the most difficult and time-consuming jobs that are the most important to the individuals in your household. (Deep-cleaning the oven and stove-top comes to mind.) Hiring a cleaning service can also be educational. Watching a professional can teach you the fastest and most efficient way to tackle those heavy cleaning jobs. Even if you only treat yourself occasionally, there is nothing quite like getting to enjoy the feeling of clean, crisp sheets on a freshly made bed— that you didn’t have to make yourself.
Bostonians know the real value of friends and neighbors. As sports fans, they also know the importance of teamwork in winning a game. The only way to win the game of life is by taking time to enjoy it–and having people in your life to enjoy it with.

How To Remove Blood Stains
Blood stains are one of the most frustrating household stains to contend with. Whether your child returns home with a scraped knee bleeding through a pair of pants or if a shaving nick leads to an unsightly spot on a towel, these organic stains should be dealt with as quickly as possible. Blood stains are much less troublesome when the blood is still wet. However, life is busy, and it is not always possible to treat a blood stain immediately. Luckily, removing dried blood stains is not as impossible as it seems. Here are some tips for removing all types of blood stains from a variety of fabrics if you don’t have a cleaning service.
How To Remove Blood Stains From Regular Fabric
This method works best on fresh blood stains.
Dampen the stain with cold water. Start by soaking the stain in cold water, as heat can actually set the stain and make things worse.
Rub the blood stain with a bar of soap. Lightly rub the dampened stain with a bar of soap, and lather gently.
Moisten the stain with ammonia. Apply a minimal amount of diluted ammonia to the stain with a cotton ball or paper towel.
Wash the item. Once you are done pre-treating the stain, wash the item using an enzyme-based laundry detergent (most laundry detergents are enzyme-based). Enzyme-based detergents help break down certain protein stains, such as blood. Once complete, check the stain. If the stain was successfully removed, dry as usual. If the stain remains, try again. Once you put the item in the dryer, the heat will further set the stain.
How To Remove Blood Stains From Light-Colored Fabric
This method also works best on fresh blood stains. It does use hydrogen peroxide, which can have a minor bleaching effect on fabric, so it is safest to use on white or light-colored clothing. However, for light-colored clothing, hydrogen peroxide is extremely efficient at removing blood stains. When mixed with blood, it creates an oxidizing chemical reaction that helps break down the stain.
Apply hydrogen peroxide to the blood stain. Saturate the blood stain with hydrogen peroxide.
Work the hydrogen peroxide into the stain. Rub the hydrogen peroxide into the stain using an old toothbrush or washcloth. The hydrogen peroxide will start to bubble when it meets the stain, much like it does when applied directly to a cut or scrape.
Allow the hydrogen peroxide to penetrate the stain. After working the hydrogen peroxide into the stain, let the stain sit for 10 to 15 minutes.
Rinse the stain. Rinse the stain under cold water. If the stain was completely removed, it is ready for step five. If the stain partially remains, repeat the process. Try mixing the hydrogen peroxide with a bit of Dawn dish soap for stubborn blood stains.
Wash as usual. Once the stain has been satisfactorily removed, wash the item as usual.
How To Remove Dried Blood Stains
While dried blood stains are more difficult to remove than fresh blood stains, they are not impossible.
Scrape off as much dried blood as possible. Scrape off any loose blood using the edge of a spoon.
Rinse the back of the stain with cold water. Loosen any remaining blood fragments by holding the back of the stain under cold, running water.
Soak fabric in cold water. Soak the stain in cold water for 10 minutes to an hour.
Work laundry detergent into the dried blood stain. Using a soft toothbrush, scrub a small amount of laundry detergent into the stain.
Rinse and evaluate the stain. Rinse the stain with cold water. If the stain hasn’t been fully removed, repeat steps one through four.
Wash as usual. Wash the item as usual.
For trickier dried blood stains, try soaking the stain in milk during step three, or rinse the stain with diluted white vinegar or club soda during step five.
How To Remove Blood Stains From Carpet or Upholstery
As with clothing, try to treat blood stains in carpet or upholstery as quickly as possible. Dried blood stains are much harder to remove.
Mix liquid dish soap with cold water. Add one teaspoon of liquid dish soap (such as Dawn) to two cups of cold water.
Blot the stain. Using a clean, white cloth, blot the stain with the cleaning solution repeatedly, until the stain is removed.
Rinse with water. Once the stain is removed, rinse the area with cold water and blot dry. If the spot remains, continue to step four.
Mix ammonia and warm water. Mix together one tablespoon of ammonia with 1/2 cup of warm water.
Blot the stain. Using another clean, white cloth, blot the stain with the solution from step four. Continue blotting until the solution has been absorbed, and the stain is removed.
Rinse with water. Once the stain is gone, rinse the area with cold water and blot dry.
Other Ways To Clean Blood Stains
Treating blood stains as quickly as possible is vital to a satisfactory outcome. If you don’t have the previously listed ingredients readily available, there are a few other methods and household items to use.
Vinegar. Apply a small amount of white vinegar to a fresh stain.
Salt. Soak the stained fabric in cold, salted water for approximately four hours.
Cornstarch. Mix cold water and cornstarch into a paste. Rub the paste into the fabric, and allow the paste to completely dry. Brush the excess paste off.
While blood stains can be stubborn, they are not impossible to remove. However, for set-in blood stains in carpet or in upholstery, you may feel more comfortable calling in the experts!

How To Find The Right Maid Service
Keeping your house clean can be challenging. Life can get in the way and you may not have time to scrub your toilets, deep clean your kitchen or clean items like baseboards or blinds. If your home is in need of a good cleaning, but you cannot do it on your own, you may be looking to hire a maid service to assist you. There are many companies out there that offer maid services and household cleanings. With so many to select from, you may find yourself wondering how you can find the right maid service for your needs. When you are looking to hire a maid service, follow the steps below to help guide you toward the right company.
Research The Maid Service
When you are considering hiring any maid service, one of the first things that you will want to do is take the time to thoroughly research the maid service. One of the easiest ways to do this is by going online. When you go online and use a search engine and search the company’s name, a wealth of information will pop up. You will learn what other users have to say about the maid service and the job that they completed at their home. Of course, you cannot please everyone, so there may be a few negative reviews for any company here and there, but if the bulk of the reviews are negative, rather than positive, you may want to try to seek out a different company. Also, pay attention to what the reviews say about the company. If people are complaining about the same thing, such as a poor job cleaning or charging higher than the quoted price, take heed.
Ask For References
Another important thing to do when you are looking to hire a maid service is to ask the maid service for references. These references should be past and current customers who use the maid service. You want to ensure that you are talking to people who have and are actually using the services that the company offers. Ask the references how well the cleaning company cleans, whether they charge the price they quoted, whether the maid shows up on time, whether the maid is trustworthy and whether they would recommend the maid service. Pay close attention to the answers that they are providing, as they can give you insight into what you can expect if you hire a certain maid service.
Learn What Cleaning Services They Offer
Most people think that all maid services offer the same cleaning services, but this is not always the case. Maid services can offer a variety of services including move in and move out cleanings, deep cleanings, routine cleaning, house cleanings and office cleanings. Some maid services also offer organizational services or services to clean a specific type of your home or office, as indicated by you. When you are in need of a cleaning service, take the time to think about what types of tasks you need the cleaning service to complete. From there, find a cleaning service that can complete the tasks that you need help with.
Ensure They Are Bonded and Insured
One of the factors you should consider when you are looking to find the right maid service is whether the maid service is bonded and insured. Unfortunately, many people do not realize that this is something that they need to look for in a service and fail to do so. Simply ask the maid service if they are bonded and insured and ask to see their paperwork. Being bonded and insured helps to protect you in two different ways. If a maid service is not insured, and one of their maids slips and falls in your home or becomes injured, the maid may file a claim against your homeowner’s insurance. Secondly, being bonded helps to ensure that if a maid accidently damages your home, such as spilling bleach on your carpet, the maid service has the money to pay for the repairs. This gives you peace of mind that if an accident happens, you do not have to pay for it.
Inquire About The Cleaning Products They Use
Did you know that not every maid service uses the same cleaning products? Some maid services ask you to supply cleaning products, while others supply them themselves. The ones that supply them may use chemical cleaners or may use cleaning products that are green or environmentally-friendly cleaning. If you have a preference for the type of cleaning products that will be used in your home, be sure to ask what cleaning products they will use when they are cleaning your home.
Find Out How They Screen New Maids
The final question that you should ask when you are looking to hire the right maid service is how a service screens new maids. You are allowing someone you do not know into your home to clean your home. As such, you want to ensure that the person is honest and trustworthy. A maid service should conduct an in-depth background check with hiring new maids. They should do a criminal background check at the very least. Some companies take things a step further and conduct personality tests or allow you to interview the maid and see who you trust the most and want in your home. The process that companies use to screen maids varies, so be sure to ask how they screen new maids to ensure you are not allowing a criminal into your home.
When you hire a maid service, you are allowing someone into your home to clean it. As such, it is important that you do your homework and ensure that the maid service is reliable, trustworthy and does a great job at cleaning. When you are looking to hire a maid service, Planet Maids is here for you. Contact us today to get a quote or to book your cleaning service.

Hardwood flooring will get dirty, dingy, and will likely begin to fade. There are several benefits of regularly cleaning your hardwood flooring. When dirt, dust, grease, and other contaminants are removed on a regular basis it not only keeps the floor looking newer but can prevent permanent damage. Consistent cleaning that is done correctly can extend the life of almost any type of hardwood floor. The following is a list of do’s and don’ts for taking care of your hardwood floors.
How To Clean Hardwood Floors
Follow the Floor Finishers Instructions – If the manufacturer or floor finishing company recommends a specific type of cleaning method, you should follow their instructions.
Use a Microfiber Mop – If you don’t have any specific instructions to follow, a microfiber mop is a great choice for daily cleaning. Use a soft microfiber dust mop to keep debris off your hardwood floors. Use just enough water to keep the mop damp.
Use a Homemade Cleaner – Sometimes the best method for cleaning a hardwood floor is a simple vinegar and water mixture or homemade lemon solution. Vinegar is strong enough to remove most stains and odors while still gentle enough that it won’t damage the wood. Vinegar is both organic and biodegradable. You’ll want to mix approximately one gallon of water with one cup, or less, of white vinegar. Hardwood floors can be cleaned with a solution that has a very light amount of vinegar in it or a mild cleaner with a neutral pH.
Know What Kind of Wood You Have – While there are general tips for cleaning that apply to most types of hardwood, it’s important to remember that certain types of wood are very hard while others are softer. Knowing which kind you have will determine which specific cleaning methods are best. Oak, Maple, and Ash are considered harder types of wood flooring. Pine, Walnut, and Cherry are normally considered a bit softer. Cherry can scratch easily, requiring a very gentle cleaning method.
Determine the Finish of Your Floor – It’s important to know what kind of finish, if any, your floor has before cleaning it. Many new hardwood floors are sealed with polyacrylic, polyurethane, or urethane. These are normally the easiest to clean since they are water and stain resistant. These types can be cleaned with a damp mop, using just a little water. Those with a shellacked or lacquered finish can be cleaned with a paste or liquid type of wax.
Maintain Proper Humidity – It’s important to maintain the humidity level in a home with hardwood flooring. It’s recommended to keep humidity between approximately 30 to 50 percent. Too little or too much can cause the flooring to warp. Lack of sufficient humidity can also cause wood floors to crack.
How NOT To Clean Hardwood Floors
Don’t Use Harsh Cleaners – Since some types of wood floors are softer than others, using the wrong cleaning method may potentially damage the surface. Almost any type of harsh cleaner, including ammonia, can easily dull or even damage the surface.
Don’t Steam Clean – Steam cleaning a hardwood floor can potentially dull the finish. A steam mop can push excessive water into the floor which can cause the surface of the wood to bubble. It may also cause delamination, which is the process of wood layers separating.
Don’t Use Oils or Furniture Spray – Oils can leave a thick residue that may accumulate over time. Furniture spray can leave a hardwood floor extremely slippery and dangerous.
Don’t Use an Excessive Amount of Water – Even the gentlest method has the potential to cause damage if you’re using an excessive amount of water. It’s always best to use a damp cloth or mop, no matter what type of liquid you’re using.
Don’t Vacuum Using the Bar Beater – This is basically a fluffing mechanism on your vacuum that is used to fluff up matted carpeting. The only safe way to use a vacuum cleaner on hardwood floors is if there is a setting specifically for wood flooring.
Why Do You Need A Professional Cleaning Service?
When it comes to keeping your hardwood floors looking good, it’s best to use a professional cleaning service. It’s also important to occasionally refinish your hardwood floor. You’ll want to hire a professional to make sure to get the job done right. A hardwood floor will stay protected and last longer if regularly cleaned by a professional cleaning service. A professional will know what types of cleaners and equipment will work best on each type of flooring to enhance its natural beauty while keeping it strong and protected. Properly cleaning a hardwood floor can also be time-consuming. Hiring a professional service is a great way to keep hardwood floors looking their best.

How To Clean Hair Brushes
If your hair has a lot of buildup despite frequent washings or feels dirty, even when you just washed it, your hairbrush could be to blame. If you are not cleaning your hairbrush regularly, you could be transferring oil, dirt and grime to your clean hair every time you brush it. Cleaning your hairbrush is fast and easy and will keep your hair looking healthy and well.
Why Clean Your Hair Brush?
It’s a grooming item, so it shouldn’t need to be cleaned itself, right? Not so fast! According to dermatologists, your hairbrush needs to be cleaned at least once a month—or more frequently if you use a lot of styling products. Every time you brush your hair, you transfer dead skin cells, oil from your skin and hair and old product to the brush. When you brush your clean hair the next day, all of that buildup is transferred, resulting in less than lovely locks.
Those skin and oil deposits cause another problem as well. They harbor bacteria, which can lead to odor over time. So every time you brush your hair with a dirty brush, you’re transferring both bacteria and a stale, musty odor back onto your hair and scalp. Thankfully, cleaning your brush eliminates this issue and ensures you’re not dirtying your hair every time you brush it.
“Cleaning your hairbrush every week keeps it from building up a ton of hair and old product and will make the brush actually do its job, which is to grip the hair and smooth out the cuticle,” Allure magazine
How Often Should Your Hairbrush Be Cleaned?
Experts recommend that you clean your hairbrush at least once a month if you do not use a lot of product and have a normal or dry skin type. If you use a lot of product or your hair gets oily very quickly, you should wash your brush more frequently; once a week is ideal.
Washing your hairbrush serves another purpose as well; it extends the life and usefulness of the brush. Quality hairbrushes are expensive, and if you replace yours every time it gets too stinky or visibly dirty, you’ll end up buying a few each year. Buy one quality brush and care for it and it could last you several years.
How To Clean Hair Brushes
You can wash several brushes at a time; either way, allow about 20 minutes to thoroughly clean your brush. You’ll need some household items to get the job done right – and your brush will need some time to dry afterwards, so don’t start this project if you’ll need to brush your hair immediately afterwards.
1. Gather the following items to start cleaning your hairbrushes:
A fine comb, pick or pen (toothpicks will work as well)
A clean toothbrush
Scissors
Shampoo
Baking soda
Vinegar
2. Use the end of the comb (or the pick/toothpicks) to remove hair from the brush. If you have long hair, you’ll find more to remove, but even people with short hair will find a surprising amount of hair matted and tangled in the brush. Use scissors on any hair that is tangled and attached to the bristles, being careful not to cut the brush itself.
3. Discard the hair. You should throw it in the trash; don’t drop it into the toilet or sink, because that could cause a plumbing disaster if the hair clogs the drain.
4. Make a mixture of equal parts shampoo and baking soda and use the toothbrush to scrub this combination into the base of the brush where the bristles are attached. This will loosen any oil or dead skin cells and lift them from the hair.
5. Add some warm water (about half a cup) and massage the bristles with the soapy mixture.
6. Rinse the brush under warm running water until no bubbles appear.
7. Rinse with vinegar to remove any traces of shampoo; the smell of the vinegar will dissipate after the brush dries.
8. Place the brush on a towel to air dry, then use as desired.
9. Use the same method to wash your combs each week; a dirty comb can transfer bacteria and oil to your hair the same way a dirty brush can.
Caring For Specialty Brushes
Some brushes need special care; you can always see if your local maid service can do it for you during a home cleaning or you can learn more about cleaning these specialty hair brushes below:
Boar Bristle Brush
A natural boar bristle brush does more than just detangle and smooth your hair, it is designed to carry the oils from your scalp down the length of your hair. This kind of brush does an amazing job keeping your hair healthy, but only when the brush is kept scrupulously clean. Boar bristles require special care and handling to prevent damage:
You’ll need shampoo, a comb and water to clean a boar bristle brush.
Comb the brush from the base up through the bristles to gently life away any tangled hair. Mix some gentle shampoo (pour about a teaspoon into a cup of warm water) and water and immerse the brush. Allow the boar bristle brush to soak for about 15 minutes, then rinse with warm water and allow to dry completely.
Plastic Detangling Brush
Those little teeth do an amazing job of removing tangles, but if you wash it too vigorously, those useful little teeth will snap off. Use your fingers to gently remove any tangled hair from the brush, then soak the brush in a blend of shampoo and warm water for about a half hour. Rinse the brush in warm water and then with vinegar, and allow to dry completely before using.
Taking the time to thoroughly clean your hairbrush ensures you are not transferring dirt and oils to your hair every time you brush. Commit to washing your hairbrush at least once a month — or more frequently — and you’ll love the fresh, clean look and smell every time you brush your hair.

How To Unclog A Kitchen Sink
If your home’s kitchen sink is clogged or has been in the past, you’re not alone. Clogged sinks are a common issue homeowners face and can leave you with a sink full of water that won’t drain and a pile of dirty dishes just waiting for someone to clean them (except maybe your home cleaning service). But a backed-up kitchen sink is no reason to panic, however. Most clogs are solvable through a variety of methods – and you may not need a plumber – that don’t cost much. Let’s look at some things you can do to put your sink back in business.
1. Use a plunger
A standard household plunger is an excellent tool for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is loosening stubborn clogs. Using a plunger is one of the first steps you can take to unclog your kitchen sink. If you have a double-sided sink, seal off one side with a stopper or wet cloth. Fill the other side with enough water to cover the bell of the plunger while creating a seal around it. Plunge with an up and down motion several times; you should hear when the suction clears the clog. When it does, remove the plunger and flush the rain with warm water.
2. Use a plumber’s snake
Also known as an auger (or a drain snake), a snake is another invaluable tool to have in your home for getting rid of stubborn clogs. This step is a bit more complicated than using a plunger because you typically have to take apart the drainpipe and trap that runs underneath your sink to provide access to the pipe that travels behind the wall. Insert the snake into the pipe until you feel resistance and then rotate the snake’s cable to break up the clog.
3. The boiling water trick
OK, so it’s not really a “trick,” but using boiling water is another relatively low-hassle method for ridding your kitchen sink of a stubborn clog. You simply bring a pot of water to a vigorous boil while you remove as much water as possible from your stopped-up sink. Pour the pan or kettle of boiling water in the sink and wait to see what happens: if the water doesn’t move it means the clog still exists. Let the water cool, remove as much of it as you can, and repeat the process of pouring boiling water down the clogged area. It may take several attempts, but it often works.
4. Is it your disposal?
Your garbage disposal may be the culprit in your clogged sink caper because a stopped-up disposal can plug the drain. Run the disposal to see if it clears the clog.
5. Drain cleaner
Supermarket shelves are well-stocked with drain cleaners that specifically target clogged drains. If clogs are a common problem, you may want to use a mild drain cleaner regularly. Be careful, however, because too-frequent use of harsher cleaners can corrode pipes in the long run. Even a mild household cleaner may be enough to keep your drain pipes clean.
6. Remove the trap
Removing the drain trap is a step you can take if you’re unable to clear the clog with a plunger. A drain trap’s shape is essential for the plumbing to work efficiently but often makes it easier for debris to become clogged within it. By removing the drain trap, you should have unobstructed access to the clog, making it easier to clear out. If you remove the trap but can’t see the clog, then the blockage is lodged someplace further down the pipe.
7. Using a coat hanger
You might have some luck clearing your sink’s clog by using a coat hanger in place of a drain snake. A coat hanger is narrow enough to remove debris from the baffle from a part of the drainage known as the waste tee. It takes some finesse, but you can often bend a hook on the end of and dislodge the clog that way. A pair of pliers is useful for bending the hanger’s hook far enough that it fits through the slots in the basket strainer. Run water in the sink after you’ve used the hanger to ensure that you’ve removed the clog.
8. Some homemade remedies
Pouring a pan of boiling water down the drain is often a quick and easy fix for a clogged drain, and there are other simple solutions you can try, including using salt and boiling water. After removing the standing water in the sink, pour a half-cup of table salt down the drain and then pour in the boiling water after letting the salt sit for a few minutes. Or, you can use a solution of vinegar and baking soda (about a cup each) and let it sit for about 15 minutes with the stopper on before flushing it down with hot water.
9. Call the professionals
When in doubt, call on a team of professionals, such as Planet Maids, to take care of your clogged sink while keeping it free from future clogs. They’ll do the job right and help keep clogs from occurring in the future. Meanwhile, they’ll save you the time from having to try and resolve the solution yourself: time that you may not have. Also, doing it yourself could create more significant problems that cost you additional time and money in the long run.

Why You Need A Maid Service In NYC
Your apartment may be small, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to clean. In fact, a smaller space could mean less places to hide clutter and more chances of noticing a minor mess. The problem is that you don’t have time to keep up with cleaning. But you also think hiring a maid service makes you lazy or is too expensive. Think again.
Reasons You Need A Maid Service
It Could Cost You More to Clean Yourself
How much do you make per hour and how long does it take you to clean? If that adds up to more than the cost of a maid service, cleaning isn’t worth your time. When you hire a maid service and pick up a few more hours at work or add a second job that you like doing instead, you’re coming out ahead financially.
Can’t work more or just don’t want to? Don’t forget how much Duane Reade charges for all of your cleaning supplies. These supplies are included in the cost of your maid service.
You Just Don’t Have Time
Ever work 60 to 80 hour weeks and come home too exhausted to do everything? It’s easy to get behind on your cleaning even when you like keeping a clean home.
Don’t let your apartment get to the point where you’re afraid to invite people over or you have to scramble to clean at the last minute. Schedule a cleaning service, and you never have to worry about how your apartment looks again.
Get It Done Right
Even when you stay on top of your weekend cleaning, it may not be enough. If you’re in a rush to enjoy your day off, you may just not scrub into every nook and cranny like you should.
Your apartment might look clean, but there could still be germs and lingering odors that you don’t notice. Professional cleaners give 100% effort 100% of the time to make sure your apartment is cleaned to perfection.
You Need Flexible Options
Maybe your work has busy seasons and slow seasons. Maybe you just want a deep clean before your family comes over for a holiday. Maybe you need a little help catching up when you’ve fallen behind on cleaning.
You don’t need to commit to a weekly or monthly schedule if you don’t want to. You can get help cleaning whenever you decide you want to.
You Just Don’t Feel Like Cleaning
It’s OK to admit that you just don’t like cleaning. You’re an adult, and no one can make you do chores.
If you spend money on fun things like going out to eat, getting drinks, or going to movies, you can also spend money on avoiding not fun things like spending half of your day off cleaning.
What About Maid Service Theft?
It’s no secret that every once in a while you’ll hear about a maid that stole something in the news. But you also hear about people getting mugged in Central Park or on 5th Avenue. Don’t let fear of a rare incident stop you from making your life more convenient.
Reputable cleaning companies perform thorough background checks before sending maids to your home. Virtually all maids are good people who believe stealing is wrong. They also want to keep their jobs.
In the unlikely event that something does happen, you can turn to the cleaning company’s insurance to reimburse you. You can also use a nanny cam or choose to be at home for your maid service if it puts your mind at ease.
What if I Can’t Find The Right Maid Service?
Hiring contractors is difficult especially if you want to find the right person that you can trust alone inside of your home. If you just search for random maids on Craigslist, there’s a much bigger chance of something going wrong.
Using a large, reputable cleaning service avoids this problem. They have a reputation to protect, and finding the right maids is a full-time job for them. In addition, if your regular maid is away on vacation or changes jobs, you don’t need to worry about finding a replacement.
Should I Go With the Cheapest Option?
In today’s consumer economy, there’s always a temptation to focus only on price. But remember that cutting costs usually means cutting something else. This might be the amount of time your maid can spend in your home, the quality of the cleaning products used, or the quality of the people hired. You should compare value, but you will often get a more reliable, trustworthy, and detailed service if you are willing to pay a little more.
What if a Maid Service Isn’t Available Right Away?
This could be a good thing. Would you eat at a restaurant that was empty during the lunch rush? It might take several days or even a couple of weeks for a cleaning service to have an available appointment. If you haven’t used a maid service before, the extra wait for a good company is worth it. Once you’re in as a customer, you can get on the regular schedule to know exactly when your maid will come.
Are There Any Disadvantages To A Cleaning Service?
Not really. People might judge you, but they’re really jealous that you have a maid. You already figured out that the cost is worth it. If you like things done a certain way, you can make that request as well. The best thing to do is to book an appointment now and see how you like it.

Simplest Ways To Help Your Children Clean Your Home.
It is very difficult for one to get their children to do some chores or simple cleaning around the house without some frowning involved. The thought of entering your kid’s rooms is just tiring. Having to take a peek at their bathroom is another nightmare all by itself. However hard you think it is, it may turn out to be a walk in the park for you. No age is too young for them to start cleaning as long as you can communicate with them. Here are some very simple ways to help your kids learn how to clean your home.
It doesn’t have to be a serious ordeal.
Scolding your kids for them to do chores around the house will not help them at all. Punishing them using chores will make them hate those chores even more and in turn become rebellious. Explain to them why they have to do their chores and give them a hand as well. A good leader does not just sit around pointing out what is to be done, instead, he helps out to show that he is part of the team too.
Start your kids early.
Do not wait until your children are teenagers so that they can start handling chores. Start with them when they are toddlers but with minimal work, as they are not strong enough to handle complicated work. You could even come up with a song for them as they are sweeping those crumbs into the dustpan. This will be fun to them and it will act as bonding time between you and them. It is not advisable that you let them work for long, as they will get bored and hate the whole experience.
Get some reward cards.
You don’t have to give tips every time your kids do chores but you could make it fun by leaving behind reward cards after two to three times when they finish with their chores. Place the cards where they are visible and at the point of the end of the chore. For instance, you could hang one on your trash can outside for them to site it as they are throwing out the trash or sneak up on them as they are doing the dishes and place the card on the kitchen table. This will act as a form of encouragement for them.
Come up with a duty roster.
Just as you may have a menu for your meals, come up with a duty schedule for your whole family. Distribute the chores and divide them into daily activities. Do not overwhelm them with chores as they also have their schoolwork and playtime of their own. You could secure thirty minutes or one hour of their time for chores. Be sure to make that hour fun. As you assign the chores, make sure you don’t give the younger kids dangerous chores like cleaning the kitchen area and if you do, it should be under strict supervision to prevent accidents.
Do not be bossy about it.
There are many ways to kill a rat. Cleaning doesn’t have to be done your way. If your kid is to vacuum then wash the dishes later, do not insist on him to vacuum first then wash dishes later. Let him feel independent and choose what to begin with first. Agitating him in that way will lower his confidence or even get him angry. Assign the chores and only help if asked to since kids are different. Some children prefer doing the chores alone so give them their space to do it.
Set an example as a parent.
You cannot tell your children to do chores whereas the same chores are difficult for you to do. Kids look up to their parents or guardians. If you are lazy, they will also be lazy. Imitation starts from when they are toddlers. You may be folding laundry and notice your daughter trying to hold her own too as she carefully observes what you are doing. Start with yourself and teach them the tradition of always cleaning after themselves. By doing so, you will not even have to assign them chores or force them to clean their rooms.
Appreciate their work.
Always have time to check on them as they work and give a cheer here and there. If at all you could be at work and come home an intact house with everything clean, show them some appreciation by praising their efforts. Make them their favorite meal or take them out for pizza. Do not do that frequently as it may imply that they will only be appreciated once they do chores. Even if you find a messy house, ask why before jumping on their necks to scold them for it
They don’t have to be perfect.
It takes time before perfecting something. You wouldn’t expect the dishes to be entirely clean after the first few washes from your child. Accept the fact that your dishes will have traces of grease, your bathroom will not be spotless and their beds will be halfway made. Kids learn as they grow and perfection is a learning process for them. Encourage them and you will notice them trying harder and harder. Encouragement acts as a motivator.
Start small.
Start your children with chores that do not require too many steps as they may get distracted along the way. Vacuuming sounds easy but for you to teach your kid how to put it on the vacuum and afterward put it off and dispose of the dirt from the vacuum bag would be very complicated for them. Switch the vacuum on for them and after they are done, help them get rid of the dirtbag. You can teach them the other steps after they get used to the first step and that is vacuuming.
All of us learned about chores from our parents or relatives and we are perfect because of their long patience. Study your child’s ability before handing them the chore. Do not assign the same chore to one of your children but instead interchange them after some time. Be sure to make it fun and accept mistakes. No one is perfect after all.

Natural Ways To Get Rid Of Ants In Your Home
If you are unfortunate enough to have an ant infestation in your home, you know how much of a bother they are. Regardless of the fact that most represent just a nuisance at worst and a reason for better food storage at best, they are not good news. As much as you’d want to respect and understand their quest for food and water, they are just irritating.
And that is just considering their numbers. Now throw in the fact that they can’t tell the difference between your skin and the floor. Yet, that is being on the kinder side of things. If certain ants find their way into your home, you’ll be more than sorry when ignored. Some sting and others are destructive to your furniture. For instance, harvester and fire ants sting while carpenter ants destroy building materials.
While house ants do little damage, they can be a problem if the nest grows. Dealing with them can be depressing, therefore the need to urgently get rid of them. Pesticides are relatively affordable and available in most stores but it might not be the best solution. They contain chemicals that are harmful to both the environment and humans. Nevertheless, there are natural ways you can get rid of ants but  some patience would do, and the reward is worth it. Unfortunately, very few people really give any thought to the effect of their actions on the environment. By thinking of using natural methods to control ants, you are at a higher level. And you have just found your people; here are some ways you can deal with ants in your home naturally.
Vinegar
Ant manifestation in your home is gross and it’s like they have a way of communicating with each other. They follow each other like there’s an invisible trail—well, there is, kinda. Ants have super sensitive antennae that can detect water, food and each other’s trail.
While it is impossible to personally ask ants their opinion on vinegar, but based on their reaction in the vicinity of an area that has been wiped by vinegar, their answer would have been close to a ‘yuck!’ Vinegar does a good job of repelling ants and masking off their trail too. Although you should know that as much as any other vinegar might get the job done, there are particular types used to kill ants. For instance, white and apple cider vinegar are most suitable to get rid of ants. Find a spray bottle and fill it up with vinegar. Then spray it in places where you have seen ants most of the time. You can also keep a piece of cloth in vinegar and wipe the surface.
Essential oils
Essential oils just like vinegar interfere with the trail of food. Another great factor about them is that most of them have a great fragrance. You might call it killing two birds with one stone. There are a variety of essential oils, they include peppermint essential oil, which smells great and can be used to support alertness and mental clarity. To deter ants, place some drops on a cotton ball and wipe it on the surface of their entry.
Tea tree essential oil is another example; it is multipurpose oil and commonly used as a disinfectant in household cleaners. To get rid of ants, the application is the same. There’s also clove essential oil that kills ants on contact in addition to disrupting scent. It is also effective in controlling other household pests too. However, clove essential oil is strong and should be used in a small amount or mixed with another oil. Cinnamon essential oil strong scent does a good job of both repellency and insecticidal activities.
Borax
Borax is a naturally occurring mineral that is used in a variety of ways; from toothpaste, cosmetics, laundry, and dishwashing detergents. It also provides positive results in getting rid of ants. The pests are attracted to borax and when ingested, they die on the spot. To use it, mix equal amount of borax and food jelly. Then put the mixture on a plate and place it where ants are. Alternatively, you can create a paste of borax, cornmeal, and a few drops of water. Then place it in areas where you tend to see ants. Although be careful to place it around kids since borax is a bit toxic.
Cinnamon and cloves
When grounded, place cinnamon and cloves powder in ants’ entryway and they will repel them. It is also a good way of adding more color to your space by keeping it smelling fresh and earthy.
Citrus
Ants seem to hate pretty many things because lemon is on the list too. Squeeze the lemon juice or take the peel and place than where the ants enter. Another option is to add a bit of lemon juice to the water that you’ll use to wash the floor. A paste of orange peels and warm water will also do it. Alternatively, you can make a citrus peel spray. Simply put the peels in a pot and then add water and vinegar. After it has boiled, allow it to stay overnight then pour it in a spray bottle.
Baking soda and powdered sugar
A mixture of equal parts baking soda and sugar is a brilliant way of getting rid of ants. Ants love sugar, it is what attracts them and baking soda is what kills it. Ants have acidic substance in their bodies that react with baking soda as soon as it’s ingested. Additionally, ants have a habit of carrying food back to their nest. Therefore, you might succeed in killing more ants than what you bargain for. Place the mixture where the ants are prevalent and let baking soda do its thing.
These pests are a common problem in most homes; the tactics mentioned above will help get rid of them. Good luck in getting rid of them.

Remodeling Ideas For Your Home Interior
Do you sometimes stand in your front yard or lounge and, you just have to sign? Are you ashamed of inviting your friends over because they might laugh at your hideous and outdated home décor behind your back? Maybe it’s a sign that you should start thinking of remodeling. Frankly, your friends don’t really care but you know a change will make you feel better. Nevertheless, whether you just want your space to be more beautiful or functional, remodeling is a perfect idea for change. Remodeling has nothing to do with a dilapidated or poorly maintained home.
It can be all new but if the interior doesn’t suit your taste or you are bored, honey, you are free to remodel. And no, don’t feel sorry thinking that the money is needed more in some non-government institution. You know how people can start with you about your use of money. Of course, we could all do with generous hearts but not at the cost of their happiness. When remodeling, you should never overlook your comfort and enjoyment. Additionally, you don’t have to break the bank to get the home you want. You have the option to do it on a budget or go crazy on it depending on what you want.
Therefore, before starting on the project, be sure to understand where you stand financially. You don’t want to start what you can’t finish. Or get the perfect home you want and end up losing it because you can’t pay the mortgage. This is where ‘not planning is planning to fail’ comes into play. You need to do some more research than this article on the result you want. Regardless, to start you off on the right foot, here are some great ideas for remodeling your space.
Have inspiration
When you are remodeling your home, it is always a good idea when you have inspiration. This is because it’s vital for you to have a clear image of the result you want. Therefore, having a certain inspiration in mind will not only make work easier for your contractor but also increase the chances of a perfect remodeling. This is because it’s more effective building on something that already exists. Plus the additional personal touches will create a good package. For instance, you can remodel your bedroom or bathroom with Persian inspiration in mind. Better yet, if you love traveling, you can take inspiration from places you have visited. Simply have the key elements right and add some personality to make it warm and authentic.
Lighting
Lighting is a key element in your home décor. It changes the mood of a room as well as it does the perceived size of a room. Therefore, changing the placement and type of the light, and in conjunction with color selection, it can come together smoothly. With proper lighting, you can change the look and mood of your space to your desire. For example, if you have a Victorian dining room design in mind, investing in an eye-catching chandelier is an important aspect. It’s having lighting that makes the eye go up and speak for your design taste and personality.

Safe Home Remedies For Pest Control
For such small creatures, pests can be a great nuisance. And that is at the least level; at most, they can cause severe damage to your home and family’s health. For starters, pests have a number of bacteria that can cause infection to your family, pet or yourself. For instance, cockroaches are one of the leading causes of asthma in children. They can also cause other respiratory infections, allergies, and skin rashes. Regardless of the fact that most diseases caused by pests are treatable, they can have chronic consequences.
They are most potentially dangerous for the elderly or people whose immunity is compromised. If health safety isn’t enough to push, think of your amazing hardwood floor being devoured by termites. They will burrow into the wooden component of your home and eat it from the inside. Pets’ problems are not a joke. You need to act as soon as you realize they exist in your home. Don’t wait until it’s too late, whereby, you will still have to get rid of them and pay for the damage done too.
While spraying with a can of bug spray will be much easier and reasonable, it may not be the best way to solve the problem. Pesticides get the job done and, unfortunately, they can harm more than just the pests at which they are targeted. They are toxic because they are designed to kill, and they can’t really tell the difference between other organisms and pests. Additionally, the application of pesticides is not very precise. Therefore unintended exposure is almost inevitable to other organisms. Good news is, you can still get rid of the nuisance without putting anyone else at risk. Here’s how.
Use Garlic Cloves
With garlic, it’s either you love it or hate it. Insects too have the same reaction, some it doesn’t bother them while others are totally repellant. Using garlic for pest control is low cost, non-toxic, and still as effective as commercial toxic pesticides. Although you should know that garlic is more useful in the garden. Example of pests it kills includes ants, beetles, caterpillar, slugs, termites, and whiteflies. If any of these find their way in your home, garlic will get the job done. All you have to do is leave piled cloves in areas likely to be infested. This will deter pests such as ants and termites from taking residence in your corners and cupboards. You can also make garlic spray to help in your garden or interplant with it.
White Vinegar
If you don’t have vinegar in your cabinet, you better get it. It is the most versatile household ingredient you’ll own. In addition to other great things it does, you can also use vinegar to control pests. It does this by repelling some pests and attracting others. For instance, ants and spiders are hugely repellant to its smell, yet fruit flies are attracted and drown in it. White vinegar is safe and you can use it regularly to control ants, spiders, aphids (for your garden), and fruit flies. White vinegar destroys the scent trails ants use to find food spraying or wiping the surface with vinegar will do it. For fruit flies though, pour the vinegar into a bowl and leave it open on the counter.
Coffee Ground
Freshly brewed coffee creates an amazing scent, but the ground left behind is deemed useless by most people. If you are one of them, you will be surprised at what it can get done. If your home is infested with pests such as ants, slugs, worms, snails, coffee grounds are great for their control. Simply lay down a 2-inch wide line around the entrance of the pests. With rats, most people resort to poison—which works, but you’ll soon have a problem of a wholly different nature. Rats are notorious for finding very exclusive places to go die, and finding them becomes such a spot. Soon you won’t have the great smell of freshly brewed coffee, but of dead rats that just can’t be found. Great. This is where coffee helps you a bit. Put a bowl of the ground near the place that seems to be the source of the smell, it will help diffuse the smell.
Apple cider vinegar
Fruit flies are so annoying; they seem to come out thin air. When you are ignorant of how to get rid of them, they have the power to change your mood entirely. Take back control of your kitchen by pouring some of the apple cider vinegar in a bowl. Then tightly cover it with a plastic bag and punch very small holes on it. Place it on your kitchen counter. Fruit flies will be irresistibly attracted to the smell but be unable to get out, therefore, they will drown.
Vodka and essential oil
Vodka can do a variety of useful things around the home beyond being a spirited drink. Fill a small bottle with vodka and add about 20 drops of essential oil. Essential oils do a great job of repelling household pests while smelling good at the same time. For instance, peppermint essential oil does a good job of controlling ants. Using the spray bottle, spray along cracks and where ants are. It kills them on contact. Additionally, mint smell keeps away flies.
Onion
It might be old school, but it works. If you hate spiders, onions will keep them away. Toss some sliced onion in a bowl of water. Then place it where spiders enter your home. the smell will repel spiders.
Cornmeal and cucumber
Sliced cucumber will repel ants. On the other hand, ants like to eat cornmeal and they will take it back to their colony but they can’t digest it. It might take time but it will work.
Cloves For Ladybugs
To give credit where its due, ladybugs are cute. However, that does not cease to make them pests. Therefore, they become a nuisance, especially in large numbers. To take care of the infestation, throw in cloves around the affected area. Ladybugs resent strong scents, and with no time, they will be gone.
Natural pest repellant needs a little more work than the commercial ones, but they still work and in a healthier way. However, it is always good to keep things clean and tidy. It will go along way in keeping bugs at bay.

Measures To Take To Prevent Wood Rotting In Your Home.
Our houses are mostly, if not entirely made of wood. As easy as wood is to access, it can be a pain in the neck once you settle in your new home and neglect it in terms of maintenance. You may not notice the rotting damage immediately as it progresses over months. Slight ignorance may go a long way to an extent of having to replace your entire floor. In severe cases, it would mean having to rebuild your whole house. This can be avoided with just a few pointers on how to maintain the quality of your wood to ensure a longer lifespan.
1. Have an inspection routine. Consider having one of those free days where you go round your house checking for cracks, holes, mite pathways and chipped paint. These are the signs that result in rotting if not addressed. Taking these findings to a professional is a good idea, as he will recommend on measures to take to control the damage from spreading to other areas of your home. As you do this, remember to record the inspection day and skip a month or two before inspecting again.
2. Trim your trees.
Unkempt trees are a source of damage to wood as they length could reach to the wood scrapping off the paint. Painted wood lasts longer because the paint acts as a protective element from harm. The branches of the tree can cause your exterior walls to get holes if long enough when it’s windy. Trim your branches to make sure none of this happens and make sure the paint that you use on your exterior is waterproof.
3. Go for treated wood. You are probably a country person and want to settle in your own land and build your home yourself. Before thinking of getting wood from your farm, you should consider having not only quality but also treated wood. Wood is treated to prevent invasion from termites and insects. Get professionals to come and inspect your wood as they treat it.
4. Check for rot.
Rot does not occur in visible areas only. The most hidden part of your wood furnishings is also vulnerable. Rot is mostly found on horizontal surfaces such as railings and stringers. To find out whether there is rotting, use your finger to press on the affected area. It tends to feel soft and weak. That shows that the problem is slowly developing into a bigger one. Get help soon as you observe these signs.
5. Clean your wood. As you are doing your normal wood cleaning, it is very hard to notice tiny leaves that fall into the cracks on your floor or exterior walls. When not gotten rid of, the leaves may attract moisture cause rot on your wood. You could use a thin metallic object like needle or screwdriver to get in there and scoop the leaves out. Be sure to dry that area completely to make sure no moisture is left. Untreated wood rotting will spread to other areas of the wood causing structural damage.
6. Clean your gutters. Gutters act as a passage for water. If there is a strain of water passing through your gutter, which means that there is a blockage. Ensure that you regularly check for clogs to prevent wash back of water that may reach into your wood and cause rotting. Do this before the rainy season begins just to be safe. Some of the leaves that fall into the gutter, small stones, and accumulated dust over a period are the main causes of clogs.
7. Use wood cleaning agents.
Do not just clean your wood with soap and water. Get those cleaning agents from the store. Things like sheens leave your woodwork looking shiny and less easy to be attacked by mites. You could even think of coating the wood with varnish for a longer lifespan. Maintained wood looks attractive as well. Before buying the wood cleaning products, get advice from the store as to which will be gentle and more effective.
8. Opt for other materials in your bathroom. If you are not sure you can maintain wood in your bathrooms, it is better that you get an alternative to wood instead. The bathroom is always prone to water as its name suggests. This may cause rot after continued use over a long period. You could go for tiles, which are far much better and can handle water since they do not rot.
9. Avoid leaving food on your floors for long. As you prepare or eat food, some of it tends to drop down and since you may be in a hurry, you may think of cleaning the mess up in the evening after work. The food will attract roaches, mites or flies along with other insects whose next favorite meal would be chewing on your wood. To prevent this, always clean up after you notice some crumbs on your floor.
10. Pick the best wood for ground contact. The structure that is on the ground is more sensitive than the one in the open. The ground has many insects, some of which feed on wood. It is advisable that you treat the wood first before you immerse it in the sand. Use pressure treated lumber for which is the best for wood that is meant for ground contact. This is advantageous because you will not have to go digging just to check if your wood is still intact.
Wood is one of the best material to use as you are building but is it also very fragile and might not withstand harsh weather conditions if not well taken care of. Before building or buying a home, do some physical research on the entire house to make sure that it is safe from rot or damage by termites. A little tender loving care to your wood will go a long way in terms of costs, time and energy.

Many kitchen utensils? Smart ways to organize your kitchen
It is true what is said, the kitchen is the heart of every home. It’s the space that gets used more than other areas of the house. Therefore, keeping it organized and clean is vital for a number of reasons. Think about the danger you can pose to your family with a disorganized kitchen. There are endless accidents that come to mind by just having clutter everywhere. Now top up with the dirt associated with clutter; the perfect recipe for creating bacteria. If you are not worried about health (which is highly doubtful), then think economy instead. Think about it, when everything is organized in your kitchen, you can save money and time.
Furthermore, as much as you might think that those cereal boxes in the sink don’t count, and you will get rid of them when your life is less hectic. Your kids are learning from you. Truth is, your children won’t love you any less whether your kitchen is organized or not, but they may adopt bad habits. Therefore, whatever you are doing—or not doing; it is always good to teach the next generation by example. So that next time you won’t be cursing whoever left the sponge full of pasta source. They’ll just know what is expected of them.
Additionally, it is crazy how much resources, time included, you could save with an organized space. Basically, there are so many reasons as to why you should keep your kitchen organized than what our busy schedule can allow us to read. Let’s get straight to it; the following are ways you can bring some peace and order in your kitchen for at least your sanity’s sake.
Create a minimalist kitchen
Don’t be surprised when you realize clutter is the only thing affecting your kitchen’s general look and function. Clutter can be depressing and make you go crazy. Ironically, it’s hard getting rid of clutter because of the sentimental feelings attached to your property. However, to get an organized kitchen, you have to declutter. And afterward, think and live like a minimalist. Being a minimalist doesn’t mean you lose everything you have in your life. Simply keep those things that you need, rather than cluttering your life with unnecessary stuff. Get ruthless and give away or sell those items you don’t use regularly. Remove any unnecessary utensils and remain with only the essentials. Also get rid of broken, old, rusty, and duplicate utensils and appliances. Now that you have only those things that you need, it will be easier for you organize.
Categorize the cabinets
Irrespective of how much space you have—or don’t have, there is need to bring order to your cabinets. It will help your cabinets live up to their potential and even have extra space left. Honestly, the number of items to be stored in these cabinets can be overwhelming. Therefore, sticking to a simple organization strategy is key. One of the ways is categorizing your cabinets as you put likes together. It not only ensures you have an organized kitchen but also cleaning becomes much easier. Additionally, it will save you money because you won’t buy duplicates. Categorizing your cabinets also saves you time because you know where everything is. And better yet, it makes it easier for other family members and friends to find what they need.
Maximize your storage
Maximizing space in your kitchen is easier said than done. Especially if don’t have money lying around waiting to be used on a renovation. Yet, that’s still fine because you can maximize your existing storage space without having to break and build a thing. Assuming that you have already purged away, you can now either bring something more or work with what you already have. With that, you don’t have to stick to just cabinets; you can also work with shelves.
Where you will be placed utensils that you use often. Another great idea is ditching the large table and get a smaller one with storage features underneath. Regardless of the fact that you are creating more space, your kitchen needs to have enough traffic area. This is to avoid accidents and your space looking cramped. Therefore, whatever storage system you settle for (because they are plenty), ensure it’s clean.
Store away small appliances
It is not the bread cramps on your counter that makes one cringe (although totally clean them up), rather, the clutter of items on them. Your counters will be more appealing when they are free of mess. Not calling your appliances a mess, but it would make your kitchen more organized if you store your small appliances away. With small appliances, you can have a blender, toaster, coffee maker, and/or other mini appliances taking up your counter space. Designate a cabinet for them, or you can organize them on the counter in a visually appealing way.
Make use of baskets
It’s the oldest trick in the book but it definitely works. You can use a decorative basket to store almost anything and just place it neatly on the counter.  Baskets are ideal for storing vegetables, dishcloths, fruits, bread, or any other item used regularly. Apart from the counter, you can also place it on top of the fridge or any other dead space available in your kitchen.
Use clear container and jars
You might beg the question, why clear? For starters, any clear jar or bowl is visually appealing. Additionally, you can easily identify what you stored in it. Therefore, to keep the pantry free of clutter, use the containers. This is because they are so much easier to store plus they don’t take too much space.
Use drawer dividers and pot racks
Whether you will have vertical or horizontal cabinet dividers, they are great for kitchens with limited space. Organizing becomes easier by half and, everything gets to have a place to be stored categorically. If the drawer dividers are not your thing, pot racks are another option worth considering. Hang the rack from your wall and store your frequently used pots and pans.
When it comes to your kitchen, keeping it simple will go a long way into ensuring the space is organized. Who doesn’t want a smooth time while cooking their favorite meal? Then be sure to make the sacrifices needed.

Cleaning Problems That Can Be Solved With Baking Powder.
Baking powder is one of the many agents that has a hundred and one uses. As simple as it may appear, it is the best remedy for almost all cleaning emergencies around the house. It is also a safer way of cleaning since it has no harsh chemical content that can be harmful to the human body. Try baking powder on some of these uses around your house and the results will turn out to be better than you could imagine.
Gets rid of the foul smell.
In areas of your house where you notice an unpleasant odor, baking powder saves the day. Pour some on the shelves or in the fridge before cleaning. The powder absorbs the odor leaving your house with a fresh smell after cleaning. You only need a little of it and not the entire packet to work. However, if the affected area is big, you could pour little baking powder in different places of that area.
  Cleans greasy dishes.
In the case of greasy dishes, do not fret, just soak the dishes in almost hot water with a little liquid soap and add some baking powder. You can let the dishes soak for an hour or so as you do other chores. The grease wouldn’t be hard to come off as the baking soda will have worked on it. Do not put too much of the baking soda as well regardless of it being less abrasive.
  Use it to clean fruits.
Fruits from the stores are generally very dirty with germs because everyone who passes near them has to touch a few while selecting. They also have a waxy coating and if not washed properly could cause stomachaches or severe diarrhea. Before eating your fruits, mix water and baking powder and wash your fruits to ensure the wax is gotten rid of.
  Act as an air freshener.
There is always that foul smell that won’t get off your couches or mattress no matter what you do. The best remedy for this is to mix your regular air freshener with some bit of baking soda and spray it directly on your seats or curtains for that fresh smell. However, do not spray too much as your couch may be left soaking in water from the spray.
  Scrub ceramics.
Discolored kitchen sinks, toilet bowls, and bathrooms can be very annoying and shameful especially when you have guests around. For best results, fill water and soap together with baking powder in your sink and let it soak overnight. Scrub continuously but gently and you will have visible results. You can make it a routine by using the powder to do your daily cleaning.
  Your kitchen towels fresh.
Kitchen towels are often left wet and may have a damp smell after some time. Soaking them in water and baking soda after use helps in getting rid of the smell and ensure a longer lifespan for them. Soak them after every three weeks of use. Do not wait for them to start getting smelly for you to soak them again.
    Sprinkle on flea infected areas.
If you have pets around, you may notice some fleas on your couch, your bed that is if you allow them there or even their beds. Sprinkling some bit of baking soda and later vacuuming is one way of getting rid of the fleas. Make sure you leave the baking soda there for a while to take effect before vacuuming for best results. This could also work when you want to dust stuffed animals. Simply put the stuffed animals in a plastic bag with baking powder and shake then vacuum and all the dust will be gone.
  Use it for laundry.
Some stains in our laundry do not need bleaches. Some of these bleaches are in fact the cause of torn shirts as they burn through our clothes with time. Just put a little baking soda and soap. Let the laundry soak for at least an hour before washing. This also applies to stained shoes but in this case, dampen a cloth into a mixture of water, soap and baking soda and wipe your shoes with it.
  Get rid of closet smells.
Just as in the case of the fridge, closets tend to get a weird smell, which is unpleasant due to stuffiness. To avoid this, open up a box of baking soda and put it in the closet. It will absorb all the smell leaving your closet smelling fresh. Do not leave it where your toddler can reach. This also works for smelly shoes. Put some of it on the shoes and pour it out before wearing them.
  Fight cabbage can smell.
After disposing the garbage from your cans, pour some baking soda inside the can and leave it open for some time. That will fight the smell from your trashcans. Do this before washing the can. You could also place a plastic bag inside the can to avoid garbage from getting in contact with your can.
  Remove stains from plastic containers.
Spicy food tends to stain our plastic containers. These stains can be difficult to get rid of. Put some warm water plus soap and baking soda in the container, leave it for thirty minutes, and wash it normally. The stains will come off leaving your container as good as new.
Uses of baking soda cannot be exhausted as earlier stated. Baking soda is easily available in stores and is highly recommended for home use. You can also clean oily surfaces in your garage with it. Do not leave it near children because they might ingest it.  Use it more frequently to keep your laundry, sinks, and upholstery clean and smelling fresh. This is the best alternative to bleaches. Use it in smaller quantities because a little of it goes a long way.
