Viral Interventions: Barbara Kruger QCQ
Quote: “Think like us, hate like us, fear like us.”
Comment: This quote resonates with me a lot. Growing up around the internet, the mob mentality that the majority of people have is strong. If you don’t share the same opinions or like someone who’s considered “controversial”, you’re either immediately ostracized or otherwise cancelled. It’s exhausting to try and fit in with a group that claims to be accepting yet cannot fathom when someone has a different view or behaves in a way that warrants DISCIPLINE, not BULLYING. Too many times have I seen people taking advantage of the fact someone is in hot water to freely hate on them in a disgusting and brutal way. These people don’t want others to change; they just want a punching bag they can project onto so they don’t have to confront the fact that they are the monsters.
Question: How far are you willing to conform to these unspoken rules in society before you break and express yourself freely?

“Consequences”
Dimensions: ~15 ft x 40 ft
Materials: plush bear, tree, index cards, metal bats, black markers, glue, acrylic paint, sponge brushes, mod podge, rope
For our final project, we hung a large damaged plush bear on a tree in Tamiami Park. Negative notes occupy the space where its heart used to be, and they fly out as the plush is hit with bats. The film is done vertically to parallel how the first instincts of people witnessing something tragic is to pull out their phones and hit record.
The story of the bear posting his art and receiving an overwhelming amount of unnecessary hate comments to the point where he decides to end it all is a story that has been seen time and time again. having experienced being ostracized for drawing something i loved and having been pushed to that point, the film is a bit personal for me which is why i wanted to be in charge of directing and filming it. even in other cases where some people DO end up taking their life, i’ve seen people in the comments making jokes or celebrating their death just because they were “cringe” or made a simple mistake that was blown out of proportion. Many people like to hop on a bandwagon as well when they see someone getting dog piled, because what better way to look cool than to hate on the new person getting canceled?
Seeing the people pass by yet not say anything also correlates to the “stander-by” effect where nobody says or does anything… for whatever reason. We were already anticipating that kind of reaction since the type of society we live in unfortunately looks the other way when abuse is being presented. Society is lacking in empathy.
Everyone is too caught up trying to be funny or mean for the sake of it, and the consequences?
Well, they can be dire.

Viral Interventions: Process

It was fun to work on this together with my group. The bear had tons of believable wounds at the end of the work day as well as us completing the insults on the flashcards. Having to think of mean phrases was challenging but some of them turned out to be fairly humorous. I was also taking the pictures along with documenting the bear in stop motion for the film.

Viral Interventions: Timeline
Tumblr media
My group member made this and it’s definitely my favorite out of the three. I thought there were similarities with hers and mine, seeing as we both used tiny pieces of paper strewn along an object. I think overall we were on the same wavelength and it represented us well.

Viral Interventions: Tasks
Tumblr media
My group member made this and I thought it was a very creative way to present the information; one I definitely haven’t thought of. I think it shows that even if you believe you’ve seen everything there is to see, there’s always another way to do things. The sketch-like text also brought together the entire piece.

Viral Interventions: Final Proposal
We will hang a large plush animal from a tree, meant to represent a corpse with its heart gouged out. Within the hole where its heart used to be are notes containing the negativity and lack of kindness that killed it. It is also weighed down by these negative notes, like cement blocks. We will be placing a balloon inside of these plush animal that will deflate over time, representing the plush’s slowly draining life force. Our audience are people who are too preoccupied to care for the suffering of others, based off of the assumption that most people won't stop to look to the plush.

VIRAL INTERVENTIONS: THE PROJECT & PROPOSALS - 3
Dog Cages
This proposal is inspired by a comic ‘The Angriest Dog in the World’ by David Lynch. We propose displaying two cages, one covered with a blanket playing audio of a dog growling and barking, may include a moveable toy inside hidden from the viewer so the cage can shake mimicking a dog lunging at the viewer. The other cage will be empty with a note along the lines of “I found a loving home!”.

VIRAL INTERVENTIONS: THE PROJECT & PROPOSALS - 2
Fake Dead Tree
We had the idea of finding or creating a fake dead tree and hanging notes from the branches. The notes would have insults written on them, as if these insults were what killed the tree. Harkening back to the “forgotten to be kind” part in our sentence. Out of all of the notes, only one of them has a positive affirmation, written in a different color, but all the other ones shadow it over—representing how cruel the world has become in modern times. We would direct it towards those who are too focused on their own problems to care for the struggle of other people. If we go with this idea, we will install it in a populated part of Tamiami Park or some other natural environment, perhaps a little away from other wildlife so more attention is on it.

VIRAL INTERVENTIONS: THE PROJECT & PROPOSALS - 1
Plush Corpse
This proposal involves a corpse, visualized by a large plush animal with its heart gouged out. Within the crater where its heart used to be are notes containing the negativity and lack of kindness that killed it. Our intended audience are those too preoccupied to care for the suffering of others, this is based off of the assumption that most people won't stop to pay attention to the plush. We would likely display this plush on the side of the road where people will be able to notice it.

Viral Interventions: Present (Final)
“The world has gone dysfunctional and we have forgotten to be kind; it is an alarming frenzy that is fatal to us all"
Dimensions: ~20ft x 70ft
Materials: tape, sharpie marker, tree
We crafted our message amidst nature adorned with graffiti. Lately, it's challenging to escape the constant barrage of news and digital media. Even serene settings are filled with overwhelming visuals. By presenting our statement this way, we highlight the absence of genuine safe spaces for anyone to find peace. However, it's important to take a break from the chaos and connect with nature whenever we can.

I made this and I think it turned out pretty good. The idea was to hang the tiny papers on some fairy lights, but then I realized I had these ghost themed lights so it visually came out much more interesting. Along with the contrast of the dark background of the closet, it’s a cool way to present information.

“The world has gone dysfunctional and we have forgotten to be kind; it is an alarming frenzy that is fatal to us all.”
I took inspiration from memes I actually enjoyed when I was younger along with some memes from movies I love (Shrek). These are all standard phrases I adapted to fit into the context of the pictures, and I tried my best to make them funny.

Viral Interventions: Identify
Tumblr media
When I think of the word “forgotten” I think of old vintage times, so I naturally used a vignette filter, some paper texture, and a raw-looking font to convey the loneliness and destitution. The lack of color also helps with the somber tone, the only hint being a tinge of yellowing brown.

'The forgotten Monet': How masterful paintings by the artist's stepdaughter are finally getting recognition
The word forgotten really hits hard for me, seeing as how the majority of my interests are from decades ago and no longer have a fandom that is alive and flourishing. It’s interesting to read about forgotten artists, and I truly hope my work never gets buried under other people’s art.
