one of the stupidest and most pathetic arguments that I have ever heard for the blatant erasing of queer representation in adaptations of classic literature is that “gay rights are a relatively new thing.” Blah, blah, blah, just say you’re homophobic at this point. “The Picture of Dorian Gray” is a wonderful representation of queer literature but it has been altered and stripped of its LGBTQIA+ roots. Oscar Wilde wrote of the queer experience when it was widely frowned upon and was even imprisoned due to sodomy, and “The Picture of Dorian Gray” was used against him at his trial. That alone should be enough to prove that it was made to be queer representation, right? Apparently not.

As a queer person, I am absolutely appalled at the fact that people are utterly destroying and rewriting old queer media because “it didn’t exist back then.” If it didn’t exist, how is it that so many were imprisoned because of it? I don’t care if the writing in the new Dorian Gray movie is decent or if the aesthetic is pretty, it is still the murder of my favorite piece of classic literature and the destruction of an old piece of queer media used against the author.
