“There is no safe investment. To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket—safe, dark, motionless, airless—it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. The alternative to tragedy, or at least to the risk of tragedy, is damnation.”
— C. S. Lewis

Author William Martin on the wonders of ordinary life:
"Do not ask your children
to strive for extraordinary lives.
Such striving may seem admirable,
but it is the way of foolishness.
Help them instead to find the wonder
and the marvel of an ordinary life.
Show them the joy of tasting
tomatoes, apples and pears.
Show them how to cry
when pets and people die.
Show them the infinite pleasure
in the touch of a hand.
And make the ordinary come alive for them.
The extraordinary will take care of itself."

The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom

There can be no positive experiences if there are no experiences at all. That is, if there is no consciousness. Without consciousness there can be no happiness, goodness, beauty, meaning, purpose …. When people ask about the meaning of life, they’re getting it backward. It’s not our universe giving meaning to conscious beings, but conscious beings giving meaning to our universe.
