One of the most horrifying videos on YouTube that appeared in my feed this week was that of US Air Force airman Aaron Bushnell immolating himself just outside the Washington DC Israeli Embassy in protest of the genocide in Gaza. Evidently, he had received orders that he would be assigned along with other US military personnel to assist the Israeli Defense Forces in their so-called war against Hamas. As he stated in his video, he preferred to take this extreme step rather than be complicit in genocide. He was only 25 years old.
Rest in peace Aaron. You are a hero. I hope that your action draws more support in the US to end this heinous slaughter of the indigenous Palestinians by their genocidal oppressors.

from the teasers and trailers, really seemed like there would be jokes! and capers! there were no jokes and capers, only realistic financial problems and mental illness! you showed me one guy who is emotionally wrecked, and one other guy only slightly less emotionally wrecked, for forty eight minutes, and you expect me to sing a song about it? buddy, i am very much crying!

thinking about my optometrist who was treating my eye infection and said “if it hurts, you can rinse your eye with boiled water. look at me - look at me. i want you to understand that i mean water that has been boiled and has since cooled down. not boiling water. do you understand?” like i’m so grateful for this man ensuring that I wouldn’t destroy my eyes by pouring boiling water in it, because it is an adequate assessment of my intelligence

When Biden officially wins this election, white liberals should be the FIRST to admit that it could not have been done without the votes of people of color SPECIFICALLY. There is no way Georgia would have flipped blue today without the work of Stacey Abrams and the tens of thousands of black voters she got to register. Arizona would definitely not be a blue state without the indigenous votes of its reservations, specifically the Navajo nation. Do NOT go and be smug about this win without fully acknowledging who you have to thank.

“I hate flying,” you mumbled, hearing Calum’s rough chuckle on the other end. “I hate you,” you said, causing him to laugh harder.
“I know,” he said, propping his chin in his hand. He doesn’t know how he convinced you to get on a plane and fly to visit him across the country. He would’ve gone to visit you at your school, but he still had finals and you were done. He begged you to come, claiming he couldn’t wait three more weeks to see you when he could see you now. He promised he’d make it worth your while if you flew in to visit him for winter break instead of him going out to you.
You, on the other hand, knew exactly how Calum had convinced you to get on this deathtrap people called a plane. It was simple, really: you were a dumbass in love. Not that you’d let him know that—so, when he’d asked you, you immediately said no even though your mind screamed “OK!!!!!!!”. It was nice to hear him beg, even just a little.
You debated with yourself, whether or not you should tell him. What if the plane goes down? What if you were to die on this flight?
Stop being so fucking dramatic, you thought.
You watched as Calum got up off the bed, then wandered over toward his apartment closet. His roommate had gone home for winter break—he said New York winter was way too cold. “What are you doing?” You asked him. You kept your voice quiet, looking at the faces around you occasionally to make sure you weren’t talking too loudly or annoying anyone.
“Gonna take a shower before you get here,” he said, turning around to wink at the camera. “Gotta look hot for my girl,” he joked, not knowing the effect his simple words had on you. Hearing Calum refer to you as his girl to everyone he talked to—his bandmates, his family, strangers—it made you feel like they carried some truth in the weight of them.
“Stop calling me that,” you said, but you meant to keep it in your head, to yourself.
“What’d you say, babe?” Calum asked, jumping back into his bed. He had placed his clothes over his desk chair. “Didn’t hear you,” he said, letting his finger continuously slam the volume button to higher the volume.
“Nothing,” you said, though part of you wished he’d heard you. You don’t know if you meant it, that you wanted him to stop calling you things like his girl, or baby, or babe—but you knew that part of you hurt hearing the words in ways he didn’t mean them. You wished he could hear you when you spoke to yourself about him. About what he does to you.
“I can’t wait to see you,” he said, giving you a goofy smile through your laptop screen. You smiled back at him, not being able to help yourself.
If you told him, you thought, if you were to just tell him you loved him, and this plane went down. What would you have to lose?
“How was fall semester?” You ask him, changing the subject instead. The thought of spilling yourself out to him was too scary.
“Kicked my ass,” he sighed, running a hand through his hair. Everything he did, no matter how miniscule, made your palms sweat and your mouth dry. “I’m glad this year’s almost over, it’s been super shitty.”
You thought back to the past year, realizing how close it was to New Years. “What do you mean? I thought you had a great year.” You said, then immediately a girl’s image popped into your head—Brenda. A girl he’d met in the beginning of the year in his Psych class. He seemed pretty heartbroken when she’d ghosted him after seven months of dating. Was he still in love with her? It’d make sense. They go to the same school—she’s not half way across the country. Logical. Practical.
“Yeah, I did. But then I had to quit football because I was failing my Humanities coarse,” he grumbled, not even referring to Brenda.
“Oh,” you said, nodding like you already knew that. “Sorry, I must’ve forgotten. When can you rejoin?”
“I don’t think I will. Between the band and studying, I’m pretty strapped.”
“Speaking of band,” you said, giving him a big smile while he groaned. “What was that song about—the new one Ashton sent me. What was it… High? It was good! Sounded different.”
“Yeah, I guess. Just need it to grow on me,” he mumbled. Calum was usually very talkative when it came to his music, but recently he’d been getting pretty shy whenever you mentioned his new music, especially when he was one of the writers.
“Well, I love it,” you said, to which he rolled his eyes. “What?”
“You say that about every song we send you.”
“Well, I love all of them! You guys are really good,” you protested, only gaining another eye roll, but a laugh followed it.
“You’re gonna be here soon. I’m gonna go shower, we’ve got reservations.”
You frowned, realizing you’d be alone on the plane again. He noticed your frown and called your name softly.
“You’re gonna be okay. I’m gonna see you so soon, not even an hour. I’m gonna give you the biggest hug. We’ll watch that show you like, what is it? The British Baking Competition,” he said confidently, gaining a small laugh from you, which caused him to smile. “What? I definitely got it right.”
“Sure, Cal,” you said, shaking your head. You watched him place his hand on the screen, so you mirrored him.
“Soon,” he promised, giving you a small smile before you said your goodbye and hung up. You shut your laptop and stared down at it for a second. What if that was your last chance? You argued with yourself, feeling tears sting the corner of your eyes—you felt stupid. You knew you’d have another chance if you wanted it. You knew this plane was going to land safely, and you’d be with Calum soon.
But what if it didn’t?
You sighed, pulling out your phone and dialing Calum, knowing you’d get his voicemail since he was already in the shower. Better than nothing. Better than better, you thought.
“Hello?”

“how am i even supposed to get his attention?"
y/n had realised it was a dumb question when she had seen the looks on her friends’ faces, and she slightly regretted the question when britt had led her to her closet and chosen a small black dress for her to borrow.
while y/n didn’t go to frat parties often, she didn’t necessarily hate them. even she would agree that sometimes taking three shots and dancing with a cute boy was a logical way to deal with the stress of seemingly constant exams - after finishing her homework, of course. so, that’s what she did.
britt and benni had disappeared sometime after they made into the packed living room, but y/n didn’t mind. she was preoccupied with the cute black-haired boy from her english lit class whose name she couldn’t quite remember. but his name was the last thing on her mind as his hands rested on her hips, her back pressed to his chest. she moved her body against his while he leaned down, placing a kiss on her neck before whispering something in her ear.
y/n could barely hear what he said, but in her not-quite-drunk-not-quite-sober state, she didn’t care. instead of replying, she turned her body to face him, wrapping her arms around his neck. before either of them could make another move, something caught y/n’s attention - well, someone caught her attention - causing her to remember why she was at the party in the first place.
calum was stood out on the back patio, a cigarette placed between his lips, a pensive look on his face. he looked almost sad.
y/n wondering why he was alone, as the soccer star was almost always surrounded by his friends or drunk girls trying to get him alone. with that thought, she realised she needed to be one of those girls, so she placed her hands on the drunken boy’s chest, pushing herself away from him and muttering a quick "gotta go” before making her way towards the back patio.
although calum annoyed the ever-living hell out of y/n, she would be lying if she said she didn’t find him attractive. especially with the way the moon reflected against his skin, and the way his jaw clenched as he breathed in warm smoke. he was gorgeous. bet or not, she wouldn’t mind being alone with him.
she stood for a minute trying to build the courage to talk to the gorgeous boy in front of her; trying to think of something to say that wouldn’t make her sound stupid. overthinking each thought because she knew, if she messed up calum would pay her no mind and she probably wouldn’t get a second chance.
“you look like you’re having fun,” her voice cut through the cold night air and calum turned to face her. a look y/n couldn’t quite read momentarily flashed on his face when he looked at her, before being replaced with a smug grin as he stubbed out his cigarette.
“yeah,” he chuckled, “i think i need another drink.”
“funny, i was just thinking that i could use another shot or two.” y/n grinned as calum raised his eyebrows, an amused look finding it’s way onto his face as he replied.
“how convenient,”
calum’s eyes shamelessly raked over her body as he stepped forward to move past her. he pushed the door open, tilting his head and staring into her eyes. his eyes seemed to bore into her soul. she felt naked; she felt vulnerable under his stare, but in a weird way, she didn’t mind.
“shall we?”
the two walked through the kitchen, stopping in front of a counter littered with bottles.
“pick your poison,” calum grinned as he placed some shot glasses in front of them.
y/n hummed in thought, eyes raking over the countless bottles of mostly vodka or tequila, and she mentally grimaced at the idea of either two. she wasn’t very fond of the taste of vodka, and tequila gave her the worst hangovers. if she wanted to impress calum, throwing up wasn’t the way to go.
a wave of relief washed over her when her eyes landed on a bottle of whiskey with a small amount left in it. as she leaned forward and grabbed the bottle, calum raised his eyebrows at her choice.
“whiskey? are you sure?”
“what? pretty boy can’t handle his liquor?” she quipped, taking off the bottle cap and filling one of the small glasses.
“i’m sure i can handle it better than you,” he laughed before filling his own glass.
“wanna bet?”
“you’re on,”
-
the almost-empty bottle had only produced two shots each, but before y/n could make a comment about the other choices, calum leant in closer so he could speak over the music. with the alcohol buzzing through her veins and the closeness of his body, y/n had to restrain herself leaning in closer.
“you know, i think i have another bottle up in my room,” he suggested, the same unreadable look from before on his face.
“trying to get me into bed already, hood?” y/n sassed, making calum chuckle.
“nah, not yet,” he replied with a wink, grabbing her hand in his and leading her through the house. y/n caught a glimpse of her friends, britt grinning like a maniac and throwing up a quick thumbs up before turning back around to stranger in front of her.
-
calum’s room was neat. everything seemingly put perfectly in its place, y/n almost didn’t believe that this was a boy’s room because god, she had seen too many messy rooms with clothes strewn everywhere and tacky posters of half-naked women lining the walls. she was pleasantly surprised to see that instead, calum’s walls were covered in band posters and photographs of whom y/n believed to be his family and friends.
as he sifted through his wardrobe, she took a seat on his bed and glanced around the room, taking mental notes on things she wanted to ask him about. like his soccer trophies or who the pretty blonde he had like twenty photos of was. as she studied the wall of posters, admiring calum’s taste in music, she couldn’t lie, she was beginning to understand why almost every girl in their school swooned over him. i mean; smart, funny, hot, talented, and has amazing taste in music? what more is there to ask for. i mean the only thing she could think of that would make him better would be if -
“oh my god. you play bass?” she spoke, her eyes glued to the instrument resting against the wall in the far corner.
“oh uh, yeah, when i get the chance.” calum turned around, pulling a bottle of jack daniels out of his wardrobe and making his way over to the bed.
y/n had to collect herself, reminding herself that she wasn’t supposed to be the one falling in love here. even if she did have a huge thing for cute guys who play instruments.
“that’s so cool,” she smiled at him, taking the bottle from his hands to take a swig.
y/n didn’t exactly know how to make someone fall in love with her, but she knew at least two things. firstly: she was drawn to people she knew she had things in common with. and secondly: she probably wasn’t going to get even a first date if she blue-balled the calum hood. and if she was being honest, whether it was the alcohol or the way his lips looked when he spoke, she wasn’t sure she would even want to.
“i haven’t seen you at many parties,” his voice was deep and calming, it felt like something you could get lost in. y/n found herself thinking about what her name would sound like coming from his mouth in sharp, panted breaths. she could tell his thoughts weren’t much purer, with the glint of mischief in his eyes, and the way he would quickly glance at her legs whenever she shifted closer.
she leaned forward, looking down at his lips before staring into his eyes and replying.
“thought i could use some fun tonight,” she spoke in a low, teasing voice, tension slowly rising between the two of them.
he knew what game she was playing, he knew because he was an expert. and he was aware of it, too. if he wanted her putty in his hands he knew the exact moves to make.
leaning forward himself, his lips lingering just inches from her own, he replied, “are you having fun, princess?”
he looked into her eyes, searching for any signs of hesitation or doubt, finding none.
“a little,” she whispered, desperate for him to close the small gap between them, “but i know how we could make it even better.”
she had barely finished her sentence before his lips were on hers. the kiss was soft at first, seemingly testing the limits of how far they wanted to take this. y/n swiped her tongue over his lip, moving herself closer and straddling his lap, kissing him harder. her fingers tangled into his hair and she gave it a light tug, causing him to groan into her mouth. he pulled away, the look on his face almost ravenous.
for a moment, y/n forgot about the bet, letting herself enjoy the way his hands and mouth felt roaming her body. she let herself enjoy the way his breath felt against her neck, the feeling of his weight on top of her. most of all, she let herself enjoy the way his arm had snaked around her waist, pulling her against him as he closed his eyes and drifted to sleep.
