A series of photos that was part of an Arts-in-the-workplace exhibition at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario
During each walk the gathered natural and man-made objects came together in an arrangement. This arrangement was not only a reflection of the natural environment along the route but also speaks of human activity too.

deel rede Michiel Riedijk, TU Delft 23/1/2009

"an environment less dominated by orthogonality and regular grid patterns – an environment much more influenced by curves and natural irregularity – might subconsciously lead to more open-minded mental pictures of society, our relationship with nature and the world in general." Starting with a folded A4 this became quite an obsessive project, experimenting with this particular tessellating origami pattern. Found Tine de Ruysser's work inspiring!(...and the project continues)

This is the  courtyard of the Sint Lucas School of Architecture Abbey building in the Hoogstraat in Ghent.
I was fascinated to find out that the 18th century artist and architect Piranesi (it is a drawing by his hand that is used in the background of this blog) became a member of the Sint Lucas guild and that this has been the guild of artists and craftsmen based in  Amsterdam, Antwerpen, Arnhem, Brugge, Delft, Gent, Leiden & Utrecht for a long, long time.

Roland Rainer House (Vienna)
"Haus unter den Baumen" is a house built for the architect himself, built between 1964 en 1966 at the Weidlichagsse 17. These images attempt to show how the landscape and design were integrated leaving much of the environment intact while "slotting in" the home.

A model (1:100 I think) was made to show the section, emphasizing the terracing both in the interior and exterior spaces. Visible in the centre of this photo are also the 2 "main trees" which the house was built unusually close to/ under.

Rauch Haus window detail
Recently worked on a structural analysis project of the Rauch Haus in Schlins, Austria by Roger Boltshauser. It's a beautiful low-high tech creation using a huge amount of materials excavated from the site itself. The more you find out about the way it has been put together, the more interesting it gets! It also includes stunning interior finishes and details.
In an initial model we made the walls out of clay. There were a few problems with this:
working at a scale of 1:50 we found it was hard to be accurate as there was some shrinkage of the clay while drying
also the adobe look - although nicely referencing the vernacular/ adobe styles - didn't achieve the sleek, contemporary look the house actually has
the "plancher hourdis" floor sections were very finicky to include, these were redone at 1:20
The final detail model (scale 1:10) was made with mdf for the walls. We actually used real reeds for the reed insulation mats, clay as on the interior finish representing the loam boards.
