Custom Order - customer was visiting New Haven from Massachusetts.
One of the things we really hoped would happen by having a physical workshop/storefront was custom orders. To be honest, spending hours making the same thing over and over again is not the most fulfilling activity, nor is it an incredible efficient use of our time. We make it a point to avoid that...

We set up a table on Orange Street so kids (and adults) could use our woodblock stamps to print their own pouches.

Teaching the kids of New Haven a little something about quality & craft. Based on the way the city has been changing lately, these kids can really use the lesson.

BOTH NEW & OLD
A Celebration should occur when something has concluded or a worthy goal has been achieved. This is not a Celebration.
Rather, we are inviting all to join us in marking the Beginning of the Plural Work/Shop. Our friends, "The Friendly Falcons" will be performing at our downstairs neighbors' space known as Intercambio. There is something really wonderful happening at 756 Chapel Street, and we would like to share it with all of you out there.
FRIDAY JUNE 22ND - 756 CHAPEL STREET / NEW HAVEN, CT.

PLURAL
Plural Work/Shop is something that Leah and I have talked about creating for quite a while now. When we formed LAYERXLAYER a few years ago, this is the sort of thing we thought it should ultimately become - since LXL has taken on a life of its own, we choose Plural as the new namesake for our physical space. LAYERXLAYER will continue as a 2 person collaborative, both literally and figuratively contained inside of Plural W/S. It really is the beginning step toward reaching our ultimate goal, which is one we'll get into more as time goes on.
Much more important than being a storefront, we envision our work/shop to become a meeting ground where creative folks can share ideas and work on all types of projects that will ultimately benefit the community. We chose New Haven, CT (for several reasons) as the place to put down roots and our focus is really on having a localized impact. We want to know our neighbors.
SHOP SPECIFICS
Plural will (at least for now) exist primarily as a physical storefront - an online shop is in the works but it will be a bit different - it really is first and foremost about doing things in a more localized context. This idea of operating on a local scale obviously enables us to hold all types of events we've been dreaming up, but will also extend to products and services.
Visitors to our shop can expect: larger furniture pieces than we've previously been able to offer, "New Haven" versions of a few of our standard goods, custom items made by friends and fellow designers/makers, collaborations with local artists/designers, weekly events and even a cabin inside the shop to hold meetings - yes, we said cabin.
Just because our focus is on the New Haven community doesn't mean we don't welcome visitors from far & wide - in fact, we will go out of our way to make sure anyone interesting in visiting our shop and/or the city at large knows exactly where the best spots are, especially the best places to eat.
*Even if you are unable to physically make it out here, there will be a few ways to participate and reap the benefits of what we are doing. We'll explain soon.
ALONG THE WAY
One of the primary reasons for opening the shop is to share all of the great things that our online network of fellow designers and makers are creating with our (new) local community. There are a handful of folks out there that helped us get this place set up and have been kind enough to put up with our randomness and impossible timeline. We have the privilege of calling them friends and we really owe them a great deal of gratitude.
PROJECT STOREFRONTS
We really must thank Project Storefronts for making Plural W/S possible - none of this would be happening without their help and support. They are an amazing group of folks dedicated to strengthening the art community and helping entrepreneurs flourish. We'll be telling you much more about them soon, but for now - Margaret, Heather, Stephanie, and Clay - Thank You, so very much.
WORK IN PROGRESS
We're unofficially open now but the shop will be a bit rough for the next week or so. We do however encourage all who are interested to stop by and say 'Hello'.
OPENING FESTIVITIES
On Friday June 22nd, we are having an event in which to introduce ourselves to New Haven. There will be good food & good company. The Friendly Falcons are performing that night as well. If you don't live in CT, why not use this as an excuse to take an adventure?
