DID YOU WRITE THIS JUST TO SPITE ME
Pluto wants me dead. They have burnt me at the stake like a witch, they have set me under a guillotine blade as if I am some noble, and they have slipped poison into my fine, fine, wine. But all attempts have failed, as I have risen from the grave each and every time to deliver a story of grief and of loss.
Which is the same sorry tale I am here to deliver today.
"Rei!" Teruya's voice was chirpy, like a bird. Perhaps it was the excitement, perhaps he usually sounded like so and she'd just tuned it out. But when she responded with a simple hum, the pitch of his voice remained. "Ya don' haveta worry abou' bein' alo'e evah agai', okay? 'Cuz Ahm always gonna be atcha side when ya need me!! Promise!"
For a first date, he sure was making a lot of promises. And yet Rei let herself believe them-- the only promises she'd let herself believe before. Something about the warmth in his tone made her feel safe believing him.
And he'd held that promise. Every moment she felt down, she had grown to expect his arms wrapped around her and his nose buried in her hair as he muttered "I love you" over and over again. And she leaned into that embrace, letting it the gentle warmth curl around her body despite her instincts telling her that it wouldn't last.
"Of all the promises I've made," he muttered to her once, his lips pressed to her ear and his arms squeezing her tightly, "this is the one I swear to never break."
But he did break it. It wasn't intentional, but he broke that promise and he broke her heart. She found herself tangled within one of the few things that remained of him-- his scarf-- all whilst choking on her own tears as she cursed his name. Liar, liar, liar. Where are you? Where are you now, when I need you more than ever?
She knew where he was, though. He was six feet under, his arms folded across his chest so they met his shoulders, and his skin was drained of color and cold as a snow-covered stone. She'd held him in her arms, her ear pressed to his chest as her breathing picked up and as she begged him to breathe; Just Breathe.
Even when she was in tears, her words incomprehensible, he didn't breathe. And, sure, he was there back then, but he was a corpse. A carcass that'd eventually be forgotten the moment the cruel hand of time moved.
"Teruya," Rei called out, her voice strained as she pressed her face into the night sky that made up his scarf. "...Incompetent.... You're such-- You're such a liar."
And then she choked on another sob as her eyes started burning from all the tears she'd shed and her tongue started hurting from all the times she'd bitten it to shut herself up.
"Why, why, why?" She whispered as she glared at the stupid smiling face he'd worn attached to his neck. "Why couldn't you have just been selfish? For me...? Why couldn't you have just lived-- Why? Why did you make me love you?"
.... She knew she'd never get answers.

This time for sure, guys.
Pluto wants me dead. They have burnt me at the stake like a witch, they have set me under a guillotine blade as if I am some noble, and they have slipped poison into my fine, fine, wine. working on ship month now but the idea just came to mind of midori having met utsuro when she was young, still constantly hospitalized, and instead of wishing to be healthy? She just wished not to die.
So she remains ill. She keeps all of her medical conditions. But she never dies. Because that is what she wished for.
When the luck begins to dry out after his death and Akane's supposed death, she finds herself hospitalized more often than not. On the brink of death more often than not.
She almost finds herself desperate enough to help the voids from inside the agency, but she's got friends there. people who would be hurt by her betrayal.
even if it means her death, the pain caused by the idea of betraying her friends was far worse than any illness she'd ever had
