There IS better autism research they could be doing, like trying to discover other medications that help with sensory issues and quality of life problems and trying to get better childhood diagnosis rates for autistic girls. But no, the decades long useless search to find out what causes autism and how to eliminate it continues. The push for “autism research” is never really about how to make things better for autistic people, it’s about how to make autistic people stop existing and that is nottttt possible. But they’ll continue to fixate on it.

in honor of MerMay, I'd like to talk about my absolute favorite piece of mermaid media:

the Scholastic Book Fair introduced me to this series of books when I was ten and I still enjoy them to this day. the world building is so engaging, and for a book published by Disney... there's some intense shit in these books! (multiple assassinations, political espionage, mass murder, cannibalism, adultery, and both human and mermaid sacrifices)

The series follows six mermaids who are descended from the six mages who ruled Atlantis before it sank into the ocean and its people became merpeople. They are tasked with preventing the end of the world while also stopping the different nations of the oceans from going to war.

Serafina is the princess of Miromara (the Mediterranean sea), who is forced to learn to ‘‘play the board, not the piece’’ like her mother always told her. Her betrothed love is caught between their authentic relationship and the appearances he has to keep up for reasons unknown to her...

Neela is the princess of Matali (the Indian Ocean), and Serafina's best friend. She is bioluminescent and glows when she experiences strong emotions. She has to learn to break free of her self-imposed optimism and escapist tendencies.

Ling is from Qin (the Pacific Ocean) and is an omnivoxa, which means that she has the unique ability to speak to all forms of ocean life. She has to journey into her own past and learn to help others communicate as well.

Ava is from the Amazon River and has a seeing-eye piranha named Baby. She is given prophetic visions that help her to guide others around her as well as herself.

Becca is from Atlantica (take a wild guess). She is very book smart but not at all street smart. Her journey focuses mostly on learning to be less analytical all of the time and allow herself some selfish indulgences.

Finally, we have Astrid. Astrid is from Ondalina (the Arctic) and is the daughter of the Ondalina leader, Admiral Kolfinn. Her and Serafina are natural enemies because of their kingdoms' long-standing ill-will. She is hot-headed, quick to judge, and brash. But she is also lonely, longs for belonging, and an incredible fighter when she has something to fight for. She also has a secret that would bring shame to her entire family if it got out...
