ok, something I want to point out in response to a lot of Quackity art and discussion I’ve seen over the last couple days:
Quackity did not enjoy torturing Dream. It’s not something he was happy about doing. I see a lot of (gorgeous!) art of him with the bloody axe and the grin and I get it, the aesthetic is very good, but also I feel like the fandom is missing the fact that at no point during Tuesday’s stream was Quackity anything other than completely miserable.
Quackity isn’t a naturally violent or power-hungry person. He’s very fair-minded! In the past, his strongest consistent motivation has been wanting to right injustices (see: making a second party to un-rig Wilbur’s election, creating Mexican L’Manburg to reveal Dream’s manipulation of the server’s political landscape, forming the Butcher Army to make Technoblade face consequences for his part in blowing up L’Manburg). Quackity is someone who, left to his own devices, wants to do the right thing.
The Quackity we saw on Tuesday was someone who’s been driven to extremity by fear and despair. Just like Tubbo with his nukes, he’s been backed into a corner and the only thing left for him to do is turn and bite. He’s had no option but to become something he hates. If I can quote myself for a minute:
The ruins of El Rapids have been there this whole time. Quackity abandoned them months ago, but he didn’t tear them down until now - the dawn after his first “visit” to Dream. He didn’t change his clothes, he didn’t even clean his face, he went from the prison straight to El Rapids. He didn’t rest until it was gone.
A lot has clearly happened to Quackity since Doomsday. He’s changed. Most of it was offstream, but we’ve seen the edges - he’s become cold, calculating, ruthless. But what happened in that cell was a point of no return. He walked out of there with the knowledge of what, exactly, he would do to another person to get what he wants.
The person who built El Rapids would never have done those things. He still had optimism in his soul. He still believed in other people, thought that he could trust them, rely on them for support, believed that even his enemies might keep their word sometimes. He thought that he could try to be a good person and still be safe. And Quackity couldn’t stand to look at it for even a moment longer.
Make no mistake: Quackity is a broken man. He’s just as broken as Wilbur was in the second half of the Pogtopia arc. He makes himself sick. But he’s still going to keep doing what he has to do, because it’s the only thing he can do.
