[txt] I’m on my way right now.
Not knowing whether he’d be bothering to come back, 9S is sure to grab Cruel Oath and his own welcome box, as well as the cables he’d collected. He pauses to eye the Keurig machine, but decides he could return for it if later if he had to. 2B might be interested in trying real coffee for once.
There would be time to dwell on how he could have possibly missed her presence, why he was so unobservant when it was literally his job, all the what-ifs in the world. Right now the only thing that mattered was seeing her. 9S clutches the box to his chest as he runs, heading for the lake. Sure enough, as he nears it he feels the unmistakable ping of another unit’s black box. It was the sort of thing his Pod could have alerted him to ages ago, but they hadn’t seen fit to give him 153 for some reason.
He follows the signal along the footpath until he finally sees her, waiting for him, like it was just another rendezvous point. 9S slows to a walk momentarily to drop his box on the soft carpet of pine needles, then runs to her and throws his arms around her in a hug. Normally he would never; but these were extraordinary circumstances. The closest thing they’d ever had to this was saluting each other in the Bunker hallway. He might not have ever seen her again, but here she was, and he wasn’t going to let this chance get away from him.
she doesn’t really know what to do with the idle time besides review the audiovisual data from the outside of the apartment complex. there are no notable changes to speak of. 2B makes a divot in the dirt with the sole of her boot, and sighs.
she’s starting to understand why pods are programmed to break up gaps of silence with proposals and attempts at conversation. the waiting is hard. she misses 042.
soon enough, 9S’s black box signal appears in her information feed, and 2B lifts her head in its general direction.
❝ 9S — ❞
he rounds the bend into her field of view, but the rest of her words slip her mind when he puts his arms around her. 2B is momentarily stunned, her hands hovering in the space just behind his shoulders. they’d never been this close before, had they? she doesn’t think so.
❝ i’m glad you’re okay, ❞ she finishes, finally managing to return the hug.

9S can feel his whole body vibrating like his CPU was in overdrive just waiting for her reply. She could always be busy, not looking at her phone, maybe she’d done the same thing as him and barely bothered with it at first. If she didn’t reply he’d just have to go looking again. He knew she was here now, eventually he-
Oh, she’s replied. He sighs, a little irritated with himself for getting so worked up over this. It wasn’t like 2B to be inattentive. There’s no need for his fingers to be this shaky. He consults his geographical data to be sure he’s got the right location.
[txt] I’m in the Woodlands. It’s not far for me at all. I should probably come see you, if that’s alright. I’ll explain when I get there.
He hadn’t seen Snatcher leave his room since their fight, though from the occasional rustling noises and the odd mass text, he could tell the specter was still alive… in a sense. Even so, he didn’t want to live here with someone who’d tried to kill him in such a brutal fashion. Staying with 2B would be so much better. They’d already roomed together at the resistance camp. It was basically the same thing. Sounded like she didn’t even have any roommates of her own to deal with. They would have the whole place to themselves.
2B begins chastising herself; if the box was indeed on the table the whole time while she was wandering around, not noticing or investigating is negligent at best. oh well. 9S is alright, so she can overlook her shortcomings for the time being.
she has to wonder how long he’s been here.
[txt]: i’m assuming that’s... the massive wooded area. i did some looking around there, but didn’t go too far in. [txt]: i’m sure you already know this place like the back of your hand.
[txt]: alright. i’ll wait for you. [txt]: i’ll go outside so i can see you coming.
2B takes the phone with her in the event that 9S sends her further messages, and heads back down to the footpath she’d seen the human couple on earlier. they’d probably detect each others’ signals before making actual visual contact, but she still wants to actually see him.

@podshot
Though the phones they’d been given were relatively simple compared to the tech he was used to, they were surprisingly difficult to format. 9S peers at the screen, sitting crosslegged on his bed. Wires run from the charging port to the open panel on his chest, plugged directly into his black box, allowing him to view his own diagnostics without entering repair mode.
No matter what he tried he couldn’t seem to break into his own code and unlock his hacking or NFCS. The guide he’d been provided had helped him get this far, but now it felt like it was nothing more than an effort to tease him, dangling the promise of freeing his abilities just out of reach. Everything else reads as normal. No problems to report. With an exasperated sigh he closes the connection and tugs the wires out of his box, replacing his chest plate and pulling his black undershirt back on.
Backing out to the phone’s main screen, he lies back in bed, thinking about who else might be able to help. Pathfinder was one of the only other robots here, and the only one 9S felt like he might be able to trust. Should really try out the messaging app, as primitive as it seemed. 9S had glanced through it the day he’d arrived, but he’d simply been too distracted by his surroundings and the insistence of his programming to find his bearings before playing around with ancient technology.
He opens the app. If he had a heart it would have skipped a beat. 2B’s name is there, at the very top of the list. 9S sits up suddenly, hunched over the screen. It… it can’t be, she’s been here all along? And he never ran into her? It was a large island, but… God, she must have no idea he’s here either or she surely would have contacted him. With shaking fingers, he selects her name and types out a message.
[txt] 2B, are you there? It’s 9S. Where are you? Are you okay? I’ll come and find you as soon as I can.
decidedly worn out by the amount of exploring she’s done and the unending barrage of information she’s been trying to parse over the course of the day, 2B finally returns to her assigned quarters. it still feels wrong. there’s too much space.
a second cursory survey of the apartment reveals a box on the dining table that she hadn’t noticed at all in her rush. it’s labeled with her name, so some of her trepidation about opening it is dismissed. as she begins to remove the tape from the packaging, something inside vibrates and plays a series of beeping tones before going quiet. the contents of the box are mostly unremarkable; the memory file is of no use to her, the sign is largely mocking, and the book is something readable in an instant. 2B puts it aside for later, thinking of 6O.
the most intriguing object is an old-world communications device, undoubtedly the source of the noise. the display lights up when she presses a button on the side, revealing a message notification. seeing the sender’s name sends her mind racing.
how had both she and 9S ended up in this place? she has to wonder if his abilities have been similarly limited; there would be no need for this comparatively primitive tech if they had their pods. 2B is relieved to hear from him, at the very least.
to: 9S from: 2B
[txt]: 9S? [txt]: yes, i’m fine. i’ve been assigned to an apartment meant for four people, but there’s no one else here. it’s in a residential development between the forest and the ocean. i think it’s called lakeview. [txt]: where are you? it might be easier for me to come to you instead if you’re far.

✘ @wdowskiss // starter call.
2B is beginning to regret her decision to cross the bridge between islands. her sensors alert her to what feels like a nonstop stream of new human signatures, an unknown scattered here and there.
they all seem to be getting about just fine, for the most part. there are no other android signals within her detection range. the conditions in this environment are notably peaceful. structures are intact and inhabited. there are no hostile machines. these deductions may ease her programming the slightest bit, but they do nothing to stop the creeping dread from returning to her circuits.
2B feels like she shouldn’t be here. she is designed for war. she is out of place.
there is a woman seated outside one of the shops on the row that stands out almost as much as she does, however.
she has a similarly odd discoloration of the skin, but, unlike the man she met in the woods, this woman is clearly identified as a human. her vitals also seem... off when they appear in the android’s information feed. her heartbeat has a drastic arrhythmia to it.
even if 2B were not subject to her programming, she would likely still make the decision to perform a welfare check.
excuse me, ma’am, ❞ she begins, saluting briefly with her left hand to her chest as she approaches the woman’s table. ❝ i am YoRHa number 2 type B. are you... in need of any medical attention? ❞

✘ @novawarp // starter call.
when 2B’s servos finally decide to function again after an irritating delay (and another diagnostic to see if she could identify the root of the issue — she could not.), she sets out after the human couple she saw heading for the forest. her idea is to maintain enough distance to observe whilst avoiding the trigger of her programming, if at all possible.
still mostly certain that this entire thing is some kind of exceedingly realistic hallucination — an attack on her consciousness data by an enemy, perhaps? could it be advanced enough to trick her error reporting into the negative? — 2B has somewhat of the proverbial pit forming in her stomach.
when does it fall apart? where is the inevitable attack going to come from?
eventually, she loses the trail of the couple, picking up another set of prints in their wake. if this is real, how many people are out here? she follows along a bit warily, sword at the ready.
soon enough, she hears a voice. it sounds as though it’s being run through some kind of modulator. the closer she gets, the more she can understand. it appears to be holding a conversation with someone, but she cannot hear a second participant. a scan of the upcoming clearing causes an unknown object message to appear in her periphery. there is... a little floating device, not unlike a pod, that’s doing the talking. she receives nothing but jumbled data when she looks at its partner.
they are human in shape, but sport blue skin and purple hair. her sensors not knowing what to classify them as does nothing to make 2B feel any better about the situation she’s in.
❝ you. who are you? ❞ she asks. her sword is held in front of her defensively. ❝ i am YoRHa number 2 type B. i need you to tell me everything you know about what’s going on here. where this is. anything. right now. ❞

commencing systems check. memory unit: green geographic data not found. vitals: green black box temperature: normal black box internal pressure: normal nfcs offline. pod connection offline. activating environmental sensors. activating inertia control system.
2B wakes with an uncharacteristic jolt. confusion worms its way into her sensors, visual data flooded with all kinds of unrecognizables. this is not her quarters in the bunker or the break room at the resistance camp; the bed is far too soft. there is no thrumming of electronics. the room is dark, save for slivers of light from a curtained window. her pod is not there to greet her, and neither is 9S.
when she stands, an imbalance in her inertia controls makes her head swim. running a surface-level diagnostic reveals no damage or viruses, but she isn’t equipped to go much deeper. one of her weapons is propped against the bedside table, but it doesn’t summon itself to her back.
just great, she thinks, taking it in one hand and deciding to explore the structure.
information previously collected by her pod in the desert zone puts itself together: this is the inside of an old-world human apartment. it is in pristine condition. there are three other bedrooms. they are unoccupied.
2B suddenly feels very small. like she’s trespassing.
eager to get out and determine the nature of the situation, she exits the apartment, neglecting to open the box on the coffee table. her sensors are greeted by a hallway lined with similar doors, a stairwell at one end. following that to its landing delivers her to... a small concrete bay for terrestrial human vehicles of various kinds. beyond that, a footpath that appears to lead into the fringes of a nearby forested area. along the footpath, there are...
people. humans. two of them. they are holding hands, and talking. 2B can’t quite make out the words. they seem not to have a care in the world, and pay her no mind as they pass. her programming all but demands that she ask after them, discern their status and offer them aid, but it’s as though she’s been frozen in place. the confused feeling from before returns in force, an overwhelming amount of alerts and a singular inertia system error flickering across her vision until the humans disappear into the treeline.
this must be some kind of horrifying dream.
