So, the other day, when I was discussing AO3's policy on solicitation, a tumblr user came at me saying that AO3's "no monetization/solicitation" rules were "bullshit" because nexus mods allows fan created mods to get paid.

Oh boy, pop culture is especially regressive right now.
Mini essay from tt below cut (elaborated on slightly from there bc word limit and censorship is crazy over there) —>
Art reflects culture, and while yes, powerful people posing suggestively in controversial ways is NOT the height of our problems right now, it is a product of them and societal acceptance of this kind of art with no repercussion is submission to a nation-wide societal collapse, or worse. A singer romanticising Lolita, an already poor movie adaptation of a novel that a man wrote to cope with his own childhood trauma, isn’t cool. Posing like a dog under a misogynistic man for your album cover, softly calling yourself “man’s best friend” (basically, ‘BITCH’, but that sounds a little harsher, yeah?) isn’t cool. An actress putting her own filth in a bar of soap and selling it to porn addicted men, not only on its own, but as a rich and powerful woman who doesn’t NEED to partake in sex work, (an industry fundamentally created for and marketed towards perverted, misogynistic, pedophile men) isn’t fucking cool.
Yes, men uphold their patriarchal systems of oppression through misogyny first and foremost, and women who act in accordance to these structures are victims of them and therefore taking the blame OFF of misogynistic men is a step in the wrong direction, however women can be misogynists too, and those women are holding these structures with their arms shaking, INSISTING that the women who have freed themselves are weak for abandoning their chains. Little things like being anti-shaving, anti-modesty, anti-‘traditional’-femininity (which really doesn’t mean ‘traditional’ at all, just quiet, docile, pseudo-Christian femininity), may seem unimportant in the scheme of things, but in the face of a culture where men’s approval is seen as ‘power’, every small act of rebellion is a good one. The adult women upholding misogynistic beliefs are adult women — they are capable of thinking for themselves and are entirely responsible for their actions and able to be blamed for them. No matter how many men are well-adjusted, good men who see us as people, we’ll never be free from an oppressive culture if we don’t WANT to be. Millions of girls all over the world are trapped in their homes, forcefully covered in fabric by pedophilic men and lusted after anyway, sold to pedophiles as their ‘wives’, severely abused, tortured, raped and killed, fleeing to what they think is ‘safety’ on your lands only to be tortured more. Little girls in YOUR ‘great country’ are being abused and groomed every day, hitting puberty and instantly an object for the gratification of men. You, an adult woman, if in the west then likely with FAR more privilege to FIGHT for freedom, can accomplish infinite things in this life or die trying, your dreams are up to test, you are never aware the extent of what you can do, and yet you degrade yourself, inciting cruelty to yourself and other women worse than how you’d treat an animal. Yes, control of your sexuality is power, but if you only conform to male-centred ideas of sexual appeal and make it your only brand of feminism, you are not IN control. It’s misogyny with a coat of glitter paint.
We’re all in a bad place right now — not just for feminism, but for society as a whole. We’re going through a major economic collapse, powerful rapists are burning the world down and people are fighting eachother instead of THEM. America, the most powerful country in the west, is on fire. I live in Northern Ireland, born in the late 2000s. I grew up hearing horror stories about The Troubles, about bombs and riots and soldiers and paramilitaries parading the streets, relieved that it was over, that I could sit in the grass in my mixed school with my Protestant and Catholic friends, both from families INVOLVED in paramilitaries, and have next to no hostility bar friendly banter. But over the past few weeks, there have been bombs in streets short distances away from me. The riots are back. It isn’t full force, but we’ve heard this song before, and it’s everywhere, not just my country, and you know it is. None of us are free yet.
We can pull through this, and come out of it stronger, build a future for our children — will you die barely human? Or will you make something of yourself? Man or woman, will you wallow in your sorrows and submit to hedonism? Or will you overcome this darkness and stand strong against injustice? History has its eyes on you. Make your choice.

The following is my rant about Billy Joel’s tell her about it
The song is very direct and to the point although it isn’t very concise, Joel is basically giving a guide to the audience on how to not fuck up their relationship. He structures the song with lots of repetition to get it through young men’s skulls that they in fact need to communicate their feelings. Which in the 80s wasn’t necessarily common sense as Joel is fighting against the stereotype/expectation of men not sharing their feelings. He seems to have an in-depth understanding that what men are taught in the system that does not teach them what to do is flawed. Going back to the structure of the song, he sandwiches his call to authority and a sympathetic tone, saying, ‘Boys, I understand we’re not emotionally intelligent off the bat’ he diverts blame from women saying ‘its your responsibility to communicate she can’t interrogate your feelings out of you.’ The second verse is where he tries to convince young men that ‘hey you might think it’s fine with the status quo,’ but you still need to put ~effort~ into the relationship. Looking at the personal context of ‘the way to stay in someone’s soul,’ it might be that Joel fell back to the status quo and has stopped putting effort into the marriage; he stopped taking her on dates or giving expressions of affection/love, which led to their divorce. Leading into the 1st chorus, there are multiple variations, he says with conviction, shouting the rooftops even - TELL HER ABOUT IT - which could be confessing feelings, confiding worries/dreams/etc. or saying three simple words “I love you” Further into the chorus he goes “tell her all your crazy dreams” which is great advice, tell your partner the hopes of the future think, think about the future of your realationship, and plan out your futures together or see if you need to go separate ways.
Verse three follows the established format, saying, “Listen boy, it is not automatically a certain guarantee,” which reiterates the chorus ‘communicate god damn it.’ A glimmer of how Joel understands relationships in the prechorus: “When you love someone, you’re always insecure.” Relationships are fragile; they make you think differently, they change you, and they make you irrational. Subsequently, he hammers that down again: “There’s only one way to reassure” (He’s going to be exasperated by the end of the song), leading into the 2nd chorus. He alters the chorus to focus on affirming your relationship ‘Tell her you wish you were there/ tell her before the day you leave.’ Rhetorically, he answers the why he should do that- give her something to believe. I see this song as an apology, a recognition of fault to his 1st ex-wife, like ‘Yeah I did something wrong, sorry, babe’ but he’s not looking to get her back; he’s just saying ‘I’ve learned’ ( But then again I said 1st ex-wife so maybe he hasn’t learned). Bring the section to a close with bridge two; he gives examples of why communication is important. He establishes relationships, makes people insecure, and now shows that “She’ll get to worrying / Because you haven’t spoken for so long.” He also keeps the theme of its your responsibility to assure your partner because he gives a common excuse: “though may not have done anything/ will that be a consolation when shes gone”- He uses the rhetorical question to motivate action on part of young men, it’s not a threat it’s a consquence and he’s asking “is that what you want?”
In the final verse, he gives a golden nugget of advice: “Just a word or two.. Could be the difference that it makes” - if that isn’t powerful, I don’t know what is. He sums up the whole of why his marriage failed: I didn’t speak with her enough. He repeats the 1st bridge in the 3rd prechours ‘she trusts you /she won’t tell you what to do’, pinpointing that relationships are built on trust, and if you can’t keep it for whatever reason, it will fall apart. To close out the whole thing he repeats the 1st chorus followed by the outro. Joel is exasperated- it’s a plea to young men TELL her about it! “Don’t wait too long / tell her now it won’t go wrong/ before it gets too late”.
This concludes my free write analysis which has more soul that the final draft :)
Also this song is a play by play of how he failed his marriage teehee
