so, like i mentioned in a previous post, victor’s father died about two to three years prior to his journey’s start.  however, victor didn’t really grieve his father, he barely saw or remembered the man save for sparse memories of bedtime stories and family dinners.  there wasn’t really anyone for victor to grieve, so grief is not something he really understands.

grief is, to victor, an extra plate, an empty chair left at the table, waiting for someone who will never come home.  grief is dog-eared books gathering dust on his bookshelf, forever stuck where his father had left them, promising to read the next chapter tomorrow night.  grief is hearing his mother cry through the wall at night, not understanding what to do to make her feel better.  grief is a spectre, a shadow that haunts his house, the thing they never talk about but is always there.  grief tinges the moments from his memory sepia at best, there’s now a ‘before’ and an ‘after’ in his life.

his grief has always been secondhand, like he’s watching it through someone else’s eyes.  all of his grief has always belonged to someone else, if he were to meet it directly, he’s not sure he would know it’s grief at all.

food is absolutely victor’s love language, because food to victor is love.  what else is love if not a plate of your favorite food waiting after a long day ??  what else is love if not leftovers brought to your door because someone cooked too much and they thought of you ??  what is love if not trying and trying and trying again to make something you’ll eat as a testament to their love for you ??

food as a love language is the reason victor still has his alolan vulpix, now ninetales.  she was a diva because she was unhappy in her current situation and refusing to even eat was the only way she could show it, so victor tried again and again and again to make something she would like just to get her to eat something.  he regularly shares the curry he makes with passing travelers, his mother would have him bring extra meals to people in postwick because she cooked too much, and he cooks for his friends if they’re upset about something or as a way to spend time together.

food, to victor, is the easiest and most natural way of showing love to someone.

not to continuously harp on victor being traumatized but like i put in an earlier post about his journey, victor lost several times along his gym challenge, and every single fucking one was on national television.  it took him days to muster up enough courage to challenge raihan again, even though he willingly forfeited his match to spare ace.  and then he lost again, and it was so fucking humiliating that he hid in the wild area for another week.  and then he lost a third time, and can you imagine being 16 and having your failures be so public that you’re afraid to show your face afterwards ??  imagine having to carry that every day, everywhere you turn there’s a reminder of your failures and people calling out your inadequacies.

there’s so much inherent trauma that comes with the gym challenge, and i think that’s really what any hesitance from leon boiled down to: the gym challenge as a public trial is absolutely brutal, your successes and your failures are publicized and scrutinized to the extreme, and victor did not come out unscathed.

victor can't help but fluster when hop speaks , invading his personal space so easily. but it's always been like this , for as long as he can remember ; victor has always let hop do as he pleased with him. if gloria could see him , victor's sure she'd have nothing nice to say.

he swallows thickly as hop finds a piece of fuzz in his hair , pulling it out as victor closes his eyes. his cheeks burn by now , & he wants nothing more than to melt into the ground , disappear so hop doesn't say anything about the flush on his cheeks.

victor's smile is somewhat shy , & he doesn't miss the sideways glance from ace , either. he can tell his partner is thinking of something , given the way it takes more interest than usual in hop's dubwool.

surely victor's misreading it & cinderace just wants to play , right ??
