It depends on if I'm going with the main canon (Roman and Pol meet during the events of SDC and aren't related) or if I'm going with the AU where Pol and Roman are blood brothers.

In the SDC route, Roman learns about Sherry at the docks like the others do, given he joined the adventure just before they ended up at Hong Kong.

Roman's family situation is pretty vague but it's mostly meant to imply he has no family at all, so he can understand Pol's feelings of losing both his sister and mother.

In the Brother AU, she grew up with them but passed away shortly before the canon takes place, leaving the two boys by themselves. They got along pretty well given they were both younger than Polnareff, with Roman being slightly older than Sherry by like a year. (I don't think she has a canonical age but Polnareff's around his mid twenties, so I like to think she was like 17-18 ish? She was rather small when Polnareff was visibly buff so she could be younger lol)

To summarize, she exists but I don't really think about her that much. Mostly because I'm way more obsessed with Polnareff, and I don't really think about family members of my favs that often tbh. She's very neat though, no ill feelings or anything lol.

Mostly because I end up MAKING myself their family one way or another, you know.

In your opinion, how does one differentiate between OOC behavior and a natural shift in a character's demeanor/attitude/choices when written in a fanfic context that is not identical to the canon in question?

When it comes to the age-old question of "he wouldn't fucking say that" I land firmly in the camp of "what would it take to MAKE him say that?"

Basically, anything can be in character if you tie it back to how you got there from canon.

A normally shy, dorky, stumbly person is a dommy sex beast in the sack? Show me how they control themselves in a professional setting and how letting "the beast" free is a release for them. Or show me how guilty they feel over their sexual preferences and how they're overcompensating outside of the bedroom to make up for it. Or maybe they're just super into RPGs and they realized that they can use their improv skills to get their partner off and their partner likes exploring the subby side of the spectrum.

Sometimes a difference in demeanor/attitude/choices is doable in a canon universe, but sometimes it's not. Someone who has a lot of repressed trauma issues and zero ability to cope with them is not going to use therapy speak until and unless they've been to therapy. So if you want to write them doing that, then put them in an AU where they've been to therapy. The issue isn't them talking like that, it's that they're talking that way with possible reason in their history for them to have access to that kind of language or thought process.

For me, a character will feel out of character if the change from canon doesn't fit into canon, but the author is still trying to force it to. A lot of those issues go away when the author can embrace the idea of an alternate universe, just a little to the left of the canon one, where something else happened that makes that characterization make perfect sense.

That's how I see things anyway. But let's see what everyone else thinks.

I think it's hilarious I pivoted from Steven Universe to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. It's almost parallel to how growing up I swore I was going to grow up to identify as a lesbian, but then did a 180 and became a gayass trans man instead, like out of nowhere.

Kinda funny also how both series feature a star motif and the themes of bloodlines passing down dangers for the younger generations to deal with. Both have heavily traumatized protags by the time their part concludes too lmao, ough.

the thing about the way people go on and on about how smut and shipping ruins the ability to think about character or worldbuilding or whatever, is that this is inherently a skill issue. nothing better to tell you about a character and their most important internal neuroses (personal, social, cultural) than discovering how they like to fuck and who they want to fuck and the why of it all. such complainants should, rly speaking, read better smut.
