It makes absolutely no sense for humans to go into the ocean, its immeasurably deep, there are thousands of animals living in it that can kill us, there are currents that can pull us out to sea - it’s the polar opposite of everything we’re designed to survive in and it’s the worlds biggest enigma. Shit, we’ve got better mapping of the surface of Mars than we do of the ocean floor. But our brains are still so paradoxically drawn to it. There’s nothing more peaceful than sitting underwater, seeing the way the sunlights refracts through it and being in that lucid, meditative mindset that is rarely achievable on land. It forces you to be present, deprives you of certain senses you rely on and distorts the way you’re able to interpret the world for those few moments. Most importantly, being in or near something as omnipresent as water forces you to realize how small and out of control you are. Your job, your worries, your bills, your material possessions, your social status - all the things we waste our mental energy on are completely insignificant. They’re all destroying the planet, infecting the ocean and the Earth is clearly responding. We are guests here, make an effort in your daily life to listen and respect her 🌏

Timelapse view of lava moving on the plains near Pu’u O’o, Hawaii. The hill in the distance is called the “Pali”, it is the mark of a large normal fault created by part of the island sliding out towards the sea. Lava cascades over the Pali on its way to the ocean during the eruption. This is substantially sped up from how fast Pahoehoe lava typically flows.
