🚨 Three-Strike Laws Are Broken—Here’s Why We Need Reform NOW 🚨
This post is to inform the general public about an issue that I don't see talked about often. I am not a professional in the field, and I have nowhere near enough research to speak of this as a foolproof solution for this issue so take this with a grain of salt.
Imagine stealing a slice of pizza and being sentenced to life in prison afterward. Absurd, right? Well, thanks to the outdated laws called the three-strike laws, that's a real consequence people have faced. These laws were originally meant to keep dangerous criminals off the streets, but now instead they've filled prisons with nonviolent offenders, wasted taxpayer money, and failed to reduce crime.
🔴 What’s Wrong With Three-Strike Laws? ➡️ Disproportionate Punishment – A person can be sentenced to life in prison for something as minor as shoplifting (looking at you, California’s Three-Strikes Policy 😡). ➡️ No Focus on Rehabilitation – Instead of helping people reintegrate into society, these laws just lock them up and throw away the key, ignoring programs that could actually reduce crime in the long run. ➡️ Judges Lose Power to Be Fair – These laws force harsh sentences regardless of the situation, taking away judges' ability to make case-by-case decisions.
🛑 But Don’t Harsh Sentences Deter Crime? Nope. Research shows no real connection between three-strike laws and lower crime rates. Most violent crimes are impulsive, meaning longer sentences don’t actually stop them from happening. Instead, these laws pack prisons, break families, and trap people in cycles of poverty.
💡 What Needs to Change? ✅ Proportional Sentencing – The punishment should fit the crime. No one should be doing life for stealing. ✅ Rehabilitation Over Incarceration – Education, therapy, and job training are proven to reduce reoffending WAY more than just sitting in a cell. ✅ Give Judges Discretion – Let them consider the full story before handing down excessive sentences.
⚡ What Can You Do? 📢 Raise Awareness – Share stories about how three-strike laws hurt real people. ✍️ Contact Lawmakers – Demand reforms that prioritize justice, not just punishment. 🗳️ Vote for Change – Support candidates who advocate for criminal justice reform.
Three-strike laws aren’t making us safer—they’re making things worse. It’s time to fight for a justice system that’s fair, humane, and actually effective. Let’s make our voices heard. 🚀
The changes I've suggested are the things I think are the best on the research I've done on the matter but I am no expert by any means so there will be issues but I have suggested these as a baseline for where we need to start. Please do not come after me.

🌟 Let’s Talk Gun Control: A Balanced Approach to Concealed Carry 🌟
This blog is meant to inform people of what should happen in the world and urge you to research this issue as it is a persistent one and should be taken action about. This is a school project, I am not a professional on this topic, and never claim to be, this is just based off of the research I have done.
Conceal carrying is also more of an issue with people's values and what they believe, there is no real single solution to solve this issue but a balanced approach might be the solution to the issue of carrying. There are many factors at risk. It is important to look at all factors before settling on an opinion.
In the United States, the debate around concealed carry isn't just about laws - it's about balancing public safety and constitutional rights. The Second Amendment protects the right to bear arms, but carrying concealed firearms adds a layer of responsibility that demands careful consideration. Here's how we can create a safer, more balanced approach:
🔑 Stricter Permitting Standards:
Not everyone should have easy access to a concealed carry permit. States with lenient laws often see spikes in violent crime. By requiring applicants to show responsible behavior and meet strict criteria, we ensure permits go to those who are truly fit to carry.
🔎 Comprehensive Background Checks:
Loopholes in some state laws let individuals with concerning histories slip through. Mandatory background checks would help keep firearms out of the hands of those with criminal records or a history of violence.
📚 Mandatory Firearm Safety Training:
Carrying a gun isn't just a right- it's a responsibility. Training on safe handling, storage, and usage can prevent accidental discharges and theft, reducing risks to the public.
🚦 Why It Works:
These measures don't infringe on the Second Amendment rights; they strengthen them. Just as a driver's license proves competence behind the wheel, these safeguards ensure responsible gun ownership.
🛡️By implementing these common-sense reforms, we can protect individual rights and public safety. It's not about taking away guns - it's about ensuring they're in responsible hands.
The Critics Might Say: "It infringes on the Second Amendment rights"
Truthfully, stricter permitting, background checks, and mandatory training do not take away anyone's rights - they ensure responsible gun ownership. Just like requiring a license to drive, these safeguards promote competence without undermining freedoms.
"Criminals will carry guns no matter what."
While we can't stop illegal possession entirely, these reforms target legal pathways to concealed carry. By tightening standards, we reduce the likelihood of guns being misused by those who obtain them through legal means.
"It creates barriers for law-abiding citizens."
Requiring training and background checks is not a barrier - it's an investment in safety. Law-abiding gun owners should support measures that ensure firearms are carried by people who understand the responsibility that comes with them.
"The problem isn't the guns - it's the people."
That's why a balanced approach focuses on who gets to carry. Responsible behavior, clean histories, and proper training are the foundation of safe gun ownership.
Gun control is a major issue within the United States of America, many factors should be considered when deciding on whether one can conceal carry or not but there is no accurate way to tell this as depending on the situation gun can be helpful and harmful alike and hence we are presented with many situations where the lack of something to defend yourself can be harmful and helpful. Hence, a balanced approach would reach all of these factors and address them.

Gerrymandering is a Real Issue that Undermines our Democracy
Imagine casting your vote in an election where the outcome has already been chosen - not by the will of the people but by carefully drawn lines that silence your voice. This is the reality of Gerrymandering, a practice that allows politicians to choose their voters instead of vice versa.
This post is created to inform voters, the general public, or anybody who is interested in subjects such as this one. It is important to ensure that all voices are heard and are given equal representation. As voters are the primary victims of gerrymandering, it is important for them to know that it is a real issue we face, and there are many solutions for it. The solution that this post will be focusing on is Independent Redistricting Commissions (IRC). A nationwide implementation of IRCs would solve Gerrymandering and return our democracy to its former self.
Gerrymandering is the manipulation of electoral district boundaries to give favor to a specific political party over the other, creating an unfair system in which people’s votes are undermined and hold little to no value as the politicians are able to choose their voters rather than people being able to pick them. Gerrymandering happens every decade to provide favor to one party over the other; whichever party is in power at the time of the redistricting will have the upper hand in any elections for the next decade or until the next round of redistricting.
So, what can we do about this issue? Our best bet is to advocate for IRCs to be implemented all across the nation, but before we do that, we need to understand what IRCs are and what impact they would have on the people.
So, what are Independent Redistricting Commissions, and how do they work?
Independent Independent redistricting commissions are bodies designed to draw electoral district boundaries in a way that minimizes partisan influence and promotes fairness in representation. Right now, redistricting is controlled by the state legislatures, which often leads to Gerrymandering. The commissions aim to create districts based on strict criteria, ensuring that the redistricting is done with little to no political influence and allowing for fair representation.
But how would we ensure that the commissions do not discriminate and have the least amount of bias possible?
Commissioners would be selected through a nonpartisan or bipartisan process with strict eligibility requirements to reduce bias and promote fairness. IRCs typically must include a balanced mix of Democrats, Republicans, and unaffiliated members.
Requirements such as
Roughly equal population
Compactness and contingency
Non-partisan boundaries
Compliance with the Voting Rights Act
Respect for communities of interest
Would ensure that the districts are not only well represented but also that the people within are in safe environments and have an equal chance at representation. These measures would ensure that the people have fair representation and that their voices are not undermined.
A good independent districting commission would also allow the public to sit in on the meetings or let the state's people voice their concerns and opinions, creating a transparent and effective way for people to voice their concerns regarding their representation. They would be able to submit map proposals, which would allow for their voice to be heard even more. The commissions would also make the data they used for redistricting available to the public to ensure that the data is accurate and does not contain any bias or give an unfair advantage to a party.
Main benefits of IRCs:
Fair Representation: IRCs would ensure that district boundaries reflect population distributions fairly, preventing one part or group from gaining an advantage. Because they must comply with Voting Rights Acts, they would also ensure that minority groups are not unfairly diluted or packed into districts.
Reduction in Partisan Gerrymandering: By removing the legislature from the process of redistricting, IRCs reduce the risk of Gerrymandering for partisan or personal gain. Due to the fair representation of democrats, republicans, and independents, IRCs ensure that no single party dominates the process.
Translucence and Public Accountability: IRCs conduct public meetings and hearings, making the redistricting process transparent. Due to the citizen's feedback and ability to appeal to the new map, it would ensure that the community needs are met.
Competitive Elections: IRCs would create more competitive elections because politicians would actually have to listen to the people's needs and find ways to solve the problems they face. They would not have the gerrymandering from previous years to rely on or the safe seats that are created during the process of Gerrymandering.
All of these things combined would restore the public trust in the system; hence, more people would vote, ensuring that the voters are able to choose the people who represent them.
IRCs are also cost and legally efficient as Gerrymandered maps often result in expensive and prolonged court battles. And they would be more time-efficient as transparent processes streamline decision-making, avoiding delays caused by partisan disputes.
IRCs prioritize keeping communities of interest together in a single district to ensure their concerns are effectively represented. AND IRCs are PROVEN to be successful in practice. States like California and Arizona have shown that IRCs lead to more equitable maps, fostering greater confidence in the democratic process and reducing partisan gerrymandering.
Addressing the Critics:
While people will argue that the Independent Redistricting Commissions are not entirely free of political influence due to their selection of commissioners, political parties can still manipulate the redistricting process. IRCs are the best solution we have due to what they would demand from the government, and the level of transparency they would provide is unmatchable by any other solution for gerrymandering and would make it very difficult for the parties to manipulate the redistricting without being held accountable at the very least. No system is entirely immune to political influence, and nor are IRCs. Still, their transparency and strict nature would allow for fair representation and insurance that the work being done is fair and not manipulated to favor a specific party. They have proven to be successful in providing fair representation in the states in which they have been implemented, like California and Arizona; the recent maps done by the IRCs in those states are far less partisan and more representative than those drawn by the legislatures, showing that even if there is some political influence in this system, it still can run properly and give the people the result that they deserve and proving that the system can and does run effectively.
Conclusion:
The issue of gerrymandering is a real problem that causes many people and communities to feel as if their voice is not heard in the broader scheme of things. Still, it is also an issue that can be stopped by implementing nationwide Independent Redistricting commissions. However, for IRCs to be properly implemented, lawmakers and voters must work together to bring IRCs to light and advocate for adopting IRCs nationwide to protect the integrity of elections. Without any action now, our democracy risks becoming a game where politicians pick their voters instead of voters choosing their leaders. It is our job as citizens to ensure that our democracy does not fail to represent us as people and is fair to all, so I encourage you to take action, email your state legislature, send them letters encouraging them to take action, and demand reformation of how redistricting is done.
This post is to inform you, so feel free to tell me if you think otherwise and share your opinion on this matter. Would IRCs allow us the reformation we need? What is your stance?
Have a good day!! Take care!!
