Ms. Bustier's voice cuts through the classroom chatter, announcing partner selection. When dark purple eyes meet bright blue ones—his brain short-circuits. Does she know how much a simple look makes his stomach do these wild, somersaulting gymnastics? How it makes his entire world tilt on its axis?

He tries to look casual, dragging a hand through his own hair and what he hopes is a chill smile. Probably looks more like a nervous twitch ( which definitely just made him look like he'd been electrocuted instead of cool ).

"Dude, you're acting super weird today," he blurted out. The familiar flush of embarrassment crawled up his neck, his hands fidgeting nervously. "Wait, no - I didn't mean-" he stammered, panic rising. "I just meant like, you seem different! In a good way! I just-"

He cut off his own rambling by kissing her. His nose bumped awkwardly against hers, his hands shook slightly where they touched her face. But there was an earnestness in the kiss. When he pulled back, his face was bright red. He wondered if he'd just done something incredibly brave or incredibly stupid. Probably both.

"You're such a sap," he mutters, but there's no real bite to his words. His fingers trace the delicate blue chocolate. Buster always knows exactly how to make his heart fel impossibly full.

"Penny," he said, his voice a careful blend of emotion and mechanical precision, "that's... the most real thing anyone's ever said to me."

Talon swallowed hard, suddenly aware of how exposed he'd just been. Vulnerability wasn't part of the M.A.D. handbook. So he crossed his arms, forced a cocky smirk, and blurted out, "Of course you can be yourself. I mean, who wouldn't want to be themselves around me? Not everyone gets the privilege of being totally genuine with someone as charming as me, you know."
