Hunger (Forbidden Fruit) Part1
When Eddie is critically injured on a call, Tommy makes a rash decision to save his life. Tommy's bloodline is cursed, and now Eddie is cursed, too, but when the curse takes an unexpected form, It forces Eddie to rely on Tommy to stay alive, to feed an unforgiving hunger.
Rated T (Rating May Change), CW: slight Body Horror. Monsters
Takes place after season 8. Canon Divergent/AU. This has BuckTommy and EddieTommy and will ultimately become BuddieTommy. Probably expect a slow burn with some angst.
Read on AO3
He gets a phone call after midnight, dead asleep after a 48 hour shift. He fumbles in the dark and reaches for the light of his phone, putting it to his ear, operating on autopilot and not bothering to look at who is calling.
“Tommy, I uh– it’s Eddie.” Evan’s voice is skaky, all wrong, setting off warning signals to the part of himself that he keeps so carefully contained. Tommy sits up in the dark, now fully alert.
“Where are you?” he asks.
Fifteen minutes later, they’re standing in post-op at Good Samaritan Hospital.
Tommy can hear the sound of Eddie's heartbeat underneath the beeps of the monitor and the rhythmic whooshing of the ventilator that's keeping the other man alive. It's weak.
Evan's holding on to Tommy's hand with a vice grip, like he’s holding on for life, trying to keep himself from crumbling to the floor in a heaping mess.
Tommy knows that's a very real possibility. He remembers that day vividly. He remembers being stuck, separated from everyone else, only able to watch over a monitor. He'd felt useless. Absolutely useless.
"Thank you, for coming when I called,” Evan says. “Chim had to go home, they’re still getting used to the new baby. Ravi’s on B shift today, and he told Hen to go home, she–” he pauses for a moment. “She was right next to him when it happened, and I think she’s still kind of in shock.” So he’d volunteered to stay until Eddie got out of surgery.
And what about you, Evan? Tommy thinks.
"Of course," Tommy says. He lets the "Always" he wants to say snuff itself out on his tongue.
"I have to go downstairs. Meet Chris and Pepa. I can't let–" Tommy can see the internal struggle working its way through Evan's whole body before he continues. "I have to prepare them. For this."
Evan lets go of Tommy's hand and it takes effort for Tommy not to reach out and pull him back, but he lets him go.
Once Evan's out of the room, Tommy knows he has a choice to make here. He weighs the possibility of Eddie's survival if he leaves things as they are. The 118 have survived much worse.
If Howie can survive a rebar through the skull and viral encephalitis, Eddie could survive having his skull cracked open by an errand cinder block falling from two stories up. Tommy’s seen them survive the impossible. He's also seen them fail. He even played a part in that himself.
He buries his face in the palms of his hands and tries to come to a solution. Any other solution, but he can smell the growing, sickly rotten threat of death wafting off Eddie's unconscious form on the bed next him. He can hear the nurses at their station out in the hallway whispering about the poor firefighter who, if he even managed to wake up, is unlikely to be the same person he was before he went under.
He thinks of Evan and the rest of the 118, of Chris. He thinks of Bobby. Those are the thoughts he uses justify what he’s doing as he lets his beast come to the surface just enough. He rides through the familiar pain of his body partially shifting, his eyes reforming and the bones in his eyes cracking and reforming within seconds.
His irises turn crimson, becoming predatorial, inhuman. His nails sharpen and elongate into talons. He cuts his own palm deep enough to get the blood running. He slice’s a thin, shallow line into the soft flesh of Eddie’s left arm and grasps it, allowing the blood to flow from his palm into the cut. He waits for the blood to mingle together.
He can feel the blood from his palm flowing and into Eddie's cut like a water being sucked down a drain. He lets go once the flow stops and the cut on his palm is fully healed. Tommy waits for a reaction, some sign of physical change, an altering of Eddie’s scent. Eddie looks unchanged.
Tommy reigns in the beast, pulling that part of himself back under the skin. He backs up to the chair behind him and practically falls into it, letting himself deflate. He's done it. The thing he's promised himself, promised his mother he'd never do. And it didn't work. There was always a chance it wouldn't work. He's relieved, so relieved. Unti
Then he watches as the cut on Eddie's arm, starts to change. The cut closes up and fades away as if it had never happened. Eddie’s heartbeat skips and then picks up again, fluttering so fast Tommy thinks it might burst. Then the machines are blaring alarmly, and Eddie's body starts convulsing, jerking violently on his hospital bed.
The nurses and doctors are rushing Tommy out of the room. As he steps out into the hallway he sees Evan with Chris and Eddie's aunt. His eyes catch Evans' whose gaze travels behind Tommy to the commotion happening in the room. Evan doesn't panic. Instead, he holds onto Christorpher who is quckly putting two and two together.
Evan pulls the boy aside and says something that Tommy cannot hear because he's concentrating, listening for Eddie's heartbeat which is leveling out from frantic and sporadic to steady and strong

Do you ever sit down and think about all the depth that was put into bucktommy after their breakup was filmed?
The Glee speech scene was filmed days after the breakup scene
Masks was filmed after the breakup
Tommy watching Buck on the monitor after Bobby died was included on the spot
Baking and baking and baking and baking and bubbling
"Not without feeding you" "You wanna try again?" "And for you"
Tommy at Bobby's funeral. Tommy in Bobby's important flashback. Saving him by the way.
It's weird. yknow.
#they don't plan anything#the cast interviews allude to last minute script changes and tons of scenes just being lost#it's why the show feels so disjointed and BuckTommy was one of the most visible examples of all of it

the postcards make me want to howl at the sky because it's such a heartbreaking level of love between Maddie and Buck. like. you think the postcards weren't a risk when she lived with Doug?? you think it wouldn't have been safer to get rid of them?? she saved all of them and kept them even when she ran TO BUCK. she was literally coming to him and still took those cards. kept them for years even after settling down in LA, in the same plastic bag and everything. and he wrote to her on and on despite not believing she ever got them or read them. and later, when she was in LA he never even considered that she KEPT them. he had her but it never occurred to him that she kept every version of him close to her. the one in front of her and the one she only knew from his writings.

People are always saying Eddie and Maddie need to interact for buddie reasons (and I agree), but I feel like a conversation between them about their experiences with parenthood would be fascinating considering they’ve both run from it, afraid they’d fail.
