been working on a short (ALLEGEDLY) marble nest comic for no joke 8 months now, and while this isn’t the full panel I thought it looks a bit beautiful like this without the additional comic bits. You’ll see it integrated into the whole panel… eventually. I don’t make promises.
also if u saw my small wip post from awhile ago this is Not that panel trust me I didn’t change the composition that much!
#pathologic#daniil dankovsky#the marble nest#first panel that I’m like yeah maybe this one specifically is good on its own. a little rough around the edges but good.#this comic has me by the balls and not in a fun way#trying to be so clear with you guys I do not finish things quickly I take 2 years don’t expect this any time soon#art

"i think pathologic classic is both fun to play and beautiful" i say, the window to my bedroom smashes as i get taken by the art police, who tell me to never say anything like that again because its an objective truth that pathologic classic is horrible and unfun and "im not allowed to laugh at any jokes made by daniil or artemy or clara ever again you filthy degenerate".
#I have a beautiful patho classic screencap thats trapped on my desktop#I’ll find it and post eventually but like yeah that game is beautiful#so much serenity walking through patho classic streets#AND ITS FUN TOO!!!!#combat your withering neurons by engaging in long form video game that doesnt provide you with easy stimulation#and discover it is fun but in its own way

inspired by awetfrog's post of their disco/patho art and I really cannot stop thinking about how well clara could play as the protagonist in a disco elysium type situation.
I could only think up 16 skills because i gotta be honest, my brain's fried from thinking up these ones. And of course, the skills change per healer but homeostasis remains the same throughout because it's kind of the main gameplay for pathologic. I also thought the writing style for the dialogue would work really well formatted as a script for a play for very obvious reasons but im not equipped to try to do that lol. what would you set as your signature skill????

So Daniil is generally aligned with and motivically associated with the Polyhedron meanwhile Artemy is explicitly linked with the earth and the town. If one follows the events of Pathologic then by this logic it only makes sense that Daniil tops (ie the polyhedron penetrating the earth) but in a way that's really really bad for both of them and also everyone around them.

there is really something significant happening with gender if you read the polyhedron as peter and maria's (unborn) child but nobody cares because you all hate maria well ok. obviously peter explicitly refers to the polyhedron as his child in p2 but in pchd at least maria's involvement is established to be essential, from andrey mentioning her as a part of the mechanism of the stamatins' process, to what she tells daniil to say to peter to talk him down on day 10: "Tell him that I am turning into a Mistress. Tell him I can feel the scarlet lava. Tell him I am ready to accept it into my womb… [...] and I shall build what he had conceived… that is why I'll preserve the Tower." this is a weird as hell thing for her to say but it makes it clear that he needs her in order to make anything of his ideas, and all of the weird wording frames maria as the mother of utopia and specifically of peter's creations including the polyhedron. also thematically relevant is the fact that maria is for some reason personally responsible for the welfare of the polyhedron and all the children inside it -- chief among them being her baby brother ("Not an hour goes by without me shuddering at the thought of that omnipresent evil creeping into the specular fortress of the Polyhedron. But I am watching the situation there closely. Trusting neither my gift nor my intuition, I get hourly updates from Khan.") and when she directly disobeys daniil and actually lies to him (the only time in either game that im aware of her telling an explicit lie btw!!! shouldn't even be possible but it's that serious to her) in order to go visit peter it's to discuss a concern about the polyhedron.
what's compelling about it to me is that in addition to just strengthening the mistresshood = motherhood and motherhood = death themes that intersect explicitly in maria's prophecy of her own death when utopia is complete (ie, when her child is born) (and nina's comment comparing maria's ascension to becoming a mother but also lamenting that it inherently means "Maria is leaving"), it illustrates the relationships between peter and maria and the polyhedron as heavily influenced by societal gender roles. mistresshood and the associated symbolic motherhood are expected of maria and actually inevitable from her perspective. the polyhedron is peter's legacy, but it is maria's responsibility. peter is destroyed by grief when it falls, whereas maria's distress at the miscarriage defeat is framed (via the way artemy breaks the news to her) as more of a perceived failure in her duty as a woman mistress, nevermind that said duty was literally killing her and the world 👍 which is interesting because peter and maria subvert gender roles in so many ways, including in every other aspect of their personal relationship, imo speaking to the dichotomy of maria's simultaneous power and powerlessness -- but not only that, in this reading, the gendered family structure is an essential part of the destructiveness of motherhood in the world of pathologic. if it means anything to you

I find it so funny that Daniils broach is the same shape as a uterus because the polyhedron is symbolic of a womb. So basically it's extra funny if I think about through a mpreg lens because artmey is symbolic of the earth/a bull and Daniil loves the polyhedron and wants to protect it at any cost...like how a father would a child.
So basically daniil got artmey pregnant and the polyhedron is their baby. And the fall of the polyhedron is either symbolic of artmey getting an abortion or having a miscarriage.
#following first paragraph logic#I do believe daniil would carry the child#which means#artemy’s choice is either: pay child support or DOUBLE HOMICIDE

i think the reason i like the marble nest so much and the reason i dont enjoy pathologic 2 itself is because it's just a fundamentally different mentality that the marble nest is written with in comparison to pathologic 2. pathologic 2 has one foot in remake one foot in sequel and succeeds i feel at neither. and the marble nest is adding onto preexisting canon but is completely new in itself (like a self contained fanfiction or side story for the bachelors route) and where the marble nest creates interest and intrigue for a new audience who will then probably play the bachelors route, pathologic 2 is enough Remake that people think it's the definitive canon. which it isn't explictly and it is not trying to be. and from an enjoyment perspective, for me, pathologic 2 being less naunced but still redoing old material feels like it trusts it's audience less, (my boyfriend called it "pathologic for dummies,") where a more blunt writing style benefits the marble nest because of it's short runtime and it's fresher subject matter and commentary. if i had one wish it's that ipl would make more things like the marble nest that are more additive yet still remain within pathologic canon instead of what i feel is a compromise between remake and sequel that is very uncomfortable.

need ten million youtuber live reactions to marble nest realization NOW. In lieu of that everyone should tell me at what point in your playthrough you realized, I’ll go first— obviously talking to Shrew OBVIOUSLY this is the basic bitch answer, but I started getting clued into whatever was happening when I talked to Gregory about the plague being a trial, I had to sit and read through that dialogue out loud like it was p1, and it was the first thing to clue me into something being wrong with daniil specifically (and not just the world being weird).
#pathologic#pathologic 2#the marble nest#daniil dankovsky#patho writers gave themselves one day of gameplay to write a cohesive NEW narrative and knocked it out of the park#fantastic. quarantine suffers bc it is not the marble nest#and also was supposed to function inside of the game itself#NO MORE OF THIS p4 demo better be another self contained narrative it’s much stronger imo#imo imo always imo

#secret posts for secret people#also artemy’s ass is gonna make it in there#never thought I’d have to reckon with how caked up I make artemy but oh well#(the real answer is none at all he has a concave rear… smashed cake type shit)

one of my favorite patho fanfic tropes is definitely people saying "fuck the canon burakh house layout" and substituting their own because. yeah. metaphysical manifestation of grief & inadequacy ass floorplan. get that shit out of here.

sinister feeling creeping up my spine when I see the way ppl talk about patho women playing with fate…. y are simon and isidor allowed to pull strings to serve a greater pattern but aglaya and maria must be in love and manipulating everything only to further their romantic goals…… I will physically suffocate on my own anguish when p3 drops if either of these narratives are written in any way shape or form give me back p1 where everyone fucked each other over for the love of the game
I go insane under the cut
do people think the jankiness of p1 creates MORE NARRATIVE DEPTH IMPLICITLY????? I’m struggling to pin down why everyone thought aglaya was madly in love with artemy in p2 specifically when yes there was similar dialogue in p1, but I think it could be a case where the overly flowery language and weirdness of everything surrounding p1 makes things seem deeper than equally complex narrative points in p2.
also if this is the case that aglaya and maria are genuinely fully in love with both of their charges respectively, I think that’s an incredibly weak (and mysoginistic) narrative point and I stand by the cooler more awesome interpretation of them using romance to hide and weaponize their manipulation. Do you see how them actually being in love and doing dumb-in-love stuff just sorta snatches their agency and reassigns it to random feelings shit. And this is not my general view on romance driven character motivation, I think Saburov is done quite well in this regard actually like he’s obsessed with his wife to his worst detriment and it fucks him over in this power game he plays. Victor literally lets himself get possessed! Like I acknowledge we can have good hopeless love narratives. But with the way they play out in the women characters it’s kinda always ‘ohhh noooo the object of my affection is too busy for me </33333 I guess I will have to desperately vie for his attention :(((‘ and if we take the characters at face value (like everyone always does) we get that same plotline THREE FUCKING TIMES!!! ENOUGHHHHH THE MANIPULATION ANGLE MAKES A FUNDAMENTALLY MORE INTERESTING NARRATIVE!!!!!!!!!!! EVA YAN I’LL BURN DOWN IPL IF THEY DO THIS TO YOU LIKE THEYRE HINTING AT AND ALSO HOW FUCKING DARE THEY SPOIL YOUR DEATH THAT WAS THE ONE SECRET THAT LET ME IDENTIFY ALL THE HBOMBERGUY VIDEO ONLY FANS FROM THE REST OF THE FANDOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
